What a pleasure this video was. To say I love the 928 is an understatement. I worship that design! I don't see the fact it didn't sell as well as Porsche hoped as the car's fault, but that of an imperfect, ignorant, uncouth world that couldn't understand it and therefore didn't deserve it. If there's a car I really wish I could afford to own, this is it.
The fact that 928 was allowed to die while 911 still exists proves 928 was too beautiful to live, water-cooled front-engine V8 GT just too much for traditionalists & why Porsche live off rebadged Dieselgate VW MLB Evo SUVs nowadays.
This is my favourite automotive channel on youtube and it only has two videos. Both of them are excellent. I'm glad someone has decided to make a channel like this.
I've been a massive fan of the Porsche 928 since first seeing it in the pages of popular car magazines in the 80's. As far as I'm concerned it's the most beautiful car ever made. I get excited every time I see one. I still hope to own one some day. Thank you.
Well thought out video. I own a 928 and often think how advanced the design was back in 1977. The car still looks modern even by todays offerings. So many press releases or TV programs have constantly bereated the car as not being a 911 replacement. In fact, back in the late 70s the 928 was far superior to the 911 both in engineering, build and of course design. From 1977 to 1995 it clearly had a dedicated clientele or Porsche would have stopped producing the car. The same narrow thoughts were given to the 924, the Boxster (which saved Porsche from financial ruin) and the Cayenne which is the best selling Porsche car of all time!
Good points, as a fellow 928 owner, I find myself thinking the same thing - how advanced it must have seemed at the time of launch. When I bought mine 7 years ago, the first time my mother saw it she asked "Is that one of the new Porsches?" Now obviously she's not in any way a car enthusiast but even so, I don't think there are many 40 year old cars that could be mistaken as something more contemparary
Fantastic video! The 928 has always been my dream car. I appreciate the deep dive on its styling. Also love how you embraced the late 70s with your black turtleneck and jacket! Great video, keep them coming 😊
Can a car be art? (Yes.) Congrats to the lucky owner of this wonderful example in Oak Green Metallic, Brown Leather interieur and the all important manual transmission! Wonderful video, more please and soon.
Please. The 3 speed auto transmission is scarcer by an order of 3:1 on the first generation cars AND it is just as fast if not faster than running through a dogleg layout.
Christopher, bravo! I feel honored to have owned a Pasha checked, manual trans '78, at the tender age of 25. Great memories. Super futuristic back then, still of the future nearly fifty years later. An absolute jaw dropper. I wish I still had it to keep my 997.1 company in the garage.
Kudos to Anatole 'Tony' Lapine and Wolfgang Möbius for designing such a beautiful and timeless car. The later 928's maybe sleeker and quicker but aesthetics on the original late 70's-to-early 80's were perfect. Superb presentation.
Totally agree. Not as fast as you say but in many ways nimbler and more fun to drive. I have tested almost all versions and I like the 78,79 cars best.
It always looked so much nicer in the flesh than in the pictures - which was all you had back then. It had that solid, integrated. breadth and depth, like a die cast boiled sweet. It reached its peak with the S4, I think. A tiny car by modern standards. A lovely, airy cabin, and practical as well.
I remember, when I was a kid in the early 80s in the Kindergarten, there was a 928 matchbox car. And it looked like a spaceship for me. There I got hooked to it for the first time and it never let me loose since then.
Finally a video that examines the 928 from a design perspective and gives some meaningful insight into the unique environment in which it was created. Thank you @AutoDidakt. However, that remarkable group of minds and all that R&D money didn't create a sub-par sports car. The 928's handling is exceptional and, post-1980, they got the power they needed. Perhaps the 2 factors that contributed most to the 928's 'downfall' were 1. The 4.5L it was introduced with was underpowered at 250HP, it was quickly upgraded (1980) to the 300hp 4.7L except for the all-important American market where it remained underpowered until 1985. 2. around 80% were delivered with an auto box. To really appreciate a 928's performance, you need at least 300HP and the manual. Around 12, 000 manuals were produced so they are out there and worth seeking out. A car this good won't stay underappreciated forever
Real number of manual cars is much higher than 12,000. This has been known for nearly 20 years already but still these old tales are often told. Exact 5sp total isn't known because '78-79 data is incomplete but its around 20,000. In '78 model year 3830 cars were made. Almost all of them were manual because automatic production started later in model year and was small at the start. '79 total was 5437 and many more are manual than in later model years. Exact split is known for '80-95 model years. 17,955 were manual and 33,390 were automatic. This means at least 35% of total production was manual gearbox cars based on known data. Knowing approximately how few '78-79 were automatic means actual split is approximately 40% were manual.
@@erkkavilhunen4916 "estimates suggest that in excess of 80% of all 928s produced, featured an automatic transmission" source, Wikipedia. 928 total production #61,056 so 20% = 12,211. Not sure what your source is but if you've ever tried to buy a manual 928, you might question its veracity. For example, of the 36 928s for sale right now in Australia, 4 are manual. I've never seen the figures you're proposing and my personal experience and cited sources indicate they are not accurate. Also, how did you calculate that of the 9,287 cars produced from 78-79, 20,000 were manual? You should do my tax
There isn't any reason to even argue about this as every single 928 made in '80-95 model years is known. Data is straight from factory system. This means options including what gearbox they had is known. Read Rennlist 928 forum. If you have any questions after that ask them in there. Known VINs include also every C23 Australia option car made in '80-95 model years. Of those 1265 cars 251 were manual. So 19,8% is correct for Australia but only for those model years. Total % goes up even in Australia as automatic really was uncommon especially in '78. Australia is not the world and in other places manual was more common. As I said, 928 community knows the details and has known them for nearly 20 years already. Rennlist has VIN thread which was started in 2007 and still misinformation is spread by many who think they know better.
Brilliant video, thank you so much👍! It makes me fall in love with my Porsche 928 S4 again and again and again❤️! Always loved the timeless design of this land shark combined with this V8 masterpiece and the most comfortable leather seats on this planet. My 928 would be the only keeper in my Porsche collection and I will never let it go🦈
The 928 blew my 14 yr old mind in 1978 and I was nearly knocked down by a 928 on an icy Sunday morning Jan 1979, Manchester, UK during a paper round. I even figured it would’ve been an honourable death😂 In the early 2000s I owned a 928 S4 for 13 glorious years, my love of this masterpiece is forever ❤
The fact that in 2024 it doesn't look old is a testament to how good the design was. It didn't fail, it was like being the most beautiful girl in the town but your sister is Miss World. Not a failure. If the 911 had never existed the 928 would have been Porsche's finest hour.
Auf dem Schulweg in den frühen 80ern immer bei einem an der Straße geparkten 928 stehen geblieben. Der Wagen gefiel mir damals und ich mag ihn heute noch... zeitloses Design.
Excellent video, both in content and in production. I love learning about the people behind history's great cars and boy is the 928 one of them; what a graceful, taut design. It's crazy that after being a 928 fan since childhood, I only now notice, thanks to this video, how perfect and economical the shutlines and panel gaps are on the 928. Looking forward to the next video!
I saw the 928 in Popular Mechanics in 1977. A very detailed article, with black and white photos!!! In 1983 I saw one in my city, same color as the video... a spaceship. The photos, videos, images do not reflect how impressive it is to see it live. The best: the rear lights. ............gran reportaje, saludos desde Chile
Many years ago a friend of mine bought a beautiful silver green 928 with tan interior and very low miles. It was such a lovely car and had the smoothest v8 engine I have ever driven. Would love to have one today but upkeep/value costs scare me to death. I own a 1985 911 coupe.
They are pretty bulletproof if maintained properly. Mine goes to a specialist once a year for servicing. Get the timing belt done every 5 years and the rest is straightforward in my experience. I did have to change a tail-light bulb this year : )
Porsche in the 1970s and 1980s came out with very unique designs that were quite different from each other. Nowadays, they style everything after the 911 whether it is a sports car, sedan or SUV.
The 928 always seemed like a European muscle car to me. The design is striking with a great stance, there is a reason way it was featured as 'thee' desirable car in so many 80's movies. And of course, it inspired great platforms like the 944 and 968. I'm sure a modern 928 design with a modern 32V DOHC V8 would look and sound amazing and be highly desirable.
Dream design, seeing it as kid of the 70s and 80s it was like nothing else - still breathtaking to behold - fabulous design review - cheers from Brisbane
One of the best reviews of this magnificent vehicle. It was one of four that I bookmarked in my Encyclopedia of Modern Cars I would flip through as a 10 year old. I finally got a first gen 1979 that I am restoring. Amazing car. Thank you Auto Didakt for a great video.
What a pleasure to watch this video! I love the fact that it is a real design overview and critique, from designers, not just the “review” from car “aficionados”. Very well crafted, and researched. My only two critiques: (1) wish it was longer; and (2) the video itself is somewhat too fast on some of the static views making me having to stop, rewind, and pause in order to appreciate the information…. Otherwise perfect! Keep them coming.
From 2005-2011, I had a 1990 S4, did 180tkm with it, bought at 50tkm. I call this model "Kõnig der Autobahn." Nothing till today offers such a perfect combination as a long distance car. 456 comes close, but servicing costs are in another league.
Tambíen yo tengo un S4 del 89, este el manual, le he restaurado entero, motor, embrague, suspensiones, frenos, no he mirado los gastos, no me importa, para mi lo importante es tener el 928 perfecto.
Fantastic video and such a landmark design. An early 928 in white or silver looks halfway between NASA and Dieter Rams. Keep going, would love to see more films from this channel.
I had an S4, can still hear the sound of it in my head. One of the great memories in driving for me. That and the feel of the Borg Warner box in the Sierra Cosworth, the smoothness of a v12 jag xj40 and the feeling of driving a Lancia Delta Integrale as hard as my limited driving ability would allow.
De facto, the best Porsche design ever in my opinion, I still love it, now like then, because it looks like an Italian super car. the only one that does so. In fact this was heavily influenced by a design of a decade before, the Chevy Corvette Testudo by Giugiaro when working for Bertone, known as the Turtle. Go check it out. And it has those small square lights in the front which I so love, as they give it a strong character, that are similar to what you can find on a 288 GTO or the tiny rectangular one found on an M1 (also by Giugiaro). And nowadays on the appreciated Hyundai Ionic5 that in fact is inspired by 70's Italian supercar design. The round headlights that come up like in a Miura. And the rear is so futuristic.
Great video. I own a 1982 928S here in Spain - the 4.7L 300bhp version with a 5-speed manual. I have often wondered what, exactly, the 928 was supposed to be. Often referred to as a "touring coupe," it seems too low, too cramped, and too focused to be compared with circa 1980 touring coupes like the XJ-S, Mercedes-Benz SEC, and BMW 633csi. Any of those would be a far better choice for a wealthy dentist to commute to work in. No, the 928 seems more... purposeful. A little angrier. Not as raw as a contemporary 911 was, but a helluva lot more serious than an XJ-S... So what was it? Who was it supposed to cater to? Maybe one way to answer that is to think about what, at the time, was kind of... similar. And the closest thing that comes to mind is something like the Aston Martin "Oscar India." That car wasn't a sports car either, or a luxury tourer. It was more of... a European muscle car, or maybe even a "super car." After all, 150+ mph cars weren't common in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The 928 wasn't MILES off the power output or pace of something like a 512bbi. Maybe Porsche just needed to market it differently... Either way, it's a great motorcar. Someone at Porsche must have loved it, because they kept building and improving it for 17 years, despite never selling more than about 5000 of them in any one of those trips around the sun. It's makes them fairly rare today, and hen's teeth compared to something like a G-body 911.
i always thought the eyes on the car made it look like anchovies and it always put me off, but i never saw the car in that kind of light and the interior is so retro modern and charming
The original 928 design and concept was stunning. But the unique design was so delicate and intricate that later modifications such as spoilers, side strips, wheel changes and later redesigns only detracted from it as a whole. The original is the most beautiful in my opinion. A true piece of art.
Fully agreed, regarding the superiority of the original version. The side strip is an utter abomination, unquestionably. However, a point could be made of the GTS having been a far more successful attempt at plastic surgery and muscle formation than it has any right to be. Is it as good as the pure design? Of course not. But taken on its own terms, its surprisingly coherent an effort.
Dear Mr. Christopher, it’s an absolute pleasure watching your videos. To be honest I’ve watched the W124 video several times and I still enjoy it. If I may place a request for a next video: the Volkswagen Golf and specifically the very first generation has a very interesting story in terms of design. Let me know on your thoughts about it. Thank you
Nice video on its design and i still think its the best looking Porsche ever but I am sorry its nearly 50/50 weight distribution made it an ABSOLUTELY legit sports car and excellent boulevard cruiser.
I remember seeing the brochure in the waiting room at my doctor’s office. I was 12yo. I was in awe of the silhouette. This probably put Porsche on the map for me than the 911 - even though it was already in radar.
I've been obsessed with the 928 since it was new. Besides its movie star credentials, it was the right design at the right time. Extremely futuristic and sexy. It made the continuation of the 911 possible because suddenly, the purists were created, and they were pissed. Its design has aged beautifully, and is still a sexy GT beast today. And I still want one as much as I did when I was a car crazy teenager.
Briefly overviewed, but still interesting and informative. I'll wait and watch for future videos for final opinion. Thanks for something different in this huge video segment.😊
Beautiful car. Fantastic video. My favourites are 911, 928 and 968. I was take surprised they 968 didn't do better because I thought they were so colourful, fun and affordable
I've Always been a fan of this model of Porsche. Its only been recently that I started to appreciate the 911 body style. I really like the 924, 928 and 944 body styles!
What a great video. Such a pleasant change to hear an informed opinion about the details of a car and its history without mention of the usual fan boy horsepower/0-60/value rubbish. Combine this with Henry catchpole and harry metcalf and you’ve got a perfect car channel! 👌
I always loved this car. I wanted one so badly. But they are too old now, and I just don't have the time to be fixing it when it breaks. That'd have been a fun project in my youth.
Absolutely. Its value, from a design perspective, cannot be overstated.
Agreed!
Yep. One of the best car designs ever.
100%……..also layed the ground work in a lot of ways for the Panamera which in my opinion is a classic design as well
The fact that 928 was allowed to die while 911 still exists proves 928 was too beautiful to live, water-cooled front-engine V8 GT just too much for traditionalists & why Porsche live off rebadged Dieselgate VW MLB Evo SUVs nowadays.
So glad you mentioned the interior. I think it’s a masterpiece of design.
Well, it is.
I've admired the 928 for decades and get excited when I occasionally see one on the road still. They looked like a spaceship in the 70s and 80s.
I wanted one since I was a kid. I am 22 now and I still think that it will be the first car I‘ll get. Still looks exceptionally cool.
This is my favourite automotive channel on youtube and it only has two videos. Both of them are excellent. I'm glad someone has decided to make a channel like this.
That’s very kind of you to say - grazie!
I've been a massive fan of the Porsche 928 since first seeing it in the pages of popular car magazines in the 80's. As far as I'm concerned it's the most beautiful car ever made. I get excited every time I see one. I still hope to own one some day. Thank you.
I've probably seen most of the videos on youtube on the 928. This is by far the best one. Really manages to capture what makes this car special.
It still looks amazing today as it did back in the day. A genius design and a true classic.
Well thought out video. I own a 928 and often think how advanced the design was back in 1977. The car still looks modern even by todays offerings. Fantastic video! The 928 has always been my dream car. I appreciate the deep dive on its styling. Also love how you embraced the late 70s with your black turtleneck and jacket! Great video, keep them coming 😊
Absolutely magnificent video. I am looking to purchase a 928 at the end of this year, and you’ve assisted in finalising that decision.
Can a car be art? (Yes.) Congrats to the lucky owner of this wonderful example in Oak Green Metallic, Brown Leather interieur and the all important manual transmission! Wonderful video, more please and soon.
Thankfully, the owner is fully aware of his steed's value as a cultural object. We are most thankful to him, for his time & initiative.
Yes, that's a great colour combination and a beautiful example
Please. The 3 speed auto transmission is scarcer by an order of 3:1 on the first generation cars AND it is just as fast if not faster than running through a dogleg layout.
Underrated. The 928 is an icon on its own merits

@pederfallbom Agreed. I've had my 4.5 manual since 1987 and it's a keeper.
Absolute masterpiece of a car and of a video👏 Superb work!
928 is such a marvel.
Another stunning presentation Christopher, Malte and Kostadin. Bravo!
I’m just an honorary mention, it’s all done by Chris and Malte.
Thank you very much indeed. The team put their collective heart & soul into this.

You've earned my subscription with this detailed and charming review of my all time favorite car. May Lapine be remembered forever.
Thank you.
A terrific film, chronicling the design of my favourite Porsche! Thank you!
I clicked on this video because I've loved this car since it first appeared when I was a kid. It still looks extraordinary.

Wonderful to see Auto Didakt now on TH-cam. Please keep the excellent analysis and commentary coming!

What a remarkable video. Very well produced and presented. You have my subscription and keep producing them. The two so far are masterpieces.
Sick outfit. Wonderful car. Fantastic video.
The pleasure is ours.
I call this model "Kõnig der Autobahn."
Nothing till today offers such a perfect combination as a long distance car.
Bro!! Keep this up. I love Porsche content and you have added a twist in style that is wildly missing. Apparently. Your video was great. More please
You’re right, the 928 is no 911 “by any stretch of the imagination”. In fact, it’s a much better car in nearly every single category
Appreciate this channel and your efforts! Will subscribe as long as the content keeps rolling in
subscribed. fantastic production, keep em coming
My Dream Car of the 1980s. This Would Be My Time Machine Like "Back to the Future".
great video
Lovely video, beautifully shot and really appreciated the focus on the original design which as the years go by looks better and better.
Fantastic video! Great music
I can't forget my encounter with the man himself in 1985 at the 'Ring: Tony Lapine.
i always thought the eyes on the car made it look like anchovies and it always put me off, but i never saw the car in that kind of light and the interior is so retro modern and charming
Another great video, keep up the good work. Personally I always preferred the front end of the 924 althoiugh that was even less popular.
Elegant retrospective. Delighted your channel appeared on my list. Liked and subscribed immediately
My favorite Porsche
Such a design classic.
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you
Some day, the Golf Mk1 will hopefully be subject of an Auto Didakt video. But for the time being, I'm sorry to report, it's not part of the line-up.
Nice video on its design and i still think its the best looking Porsche ever but I am sorry its nearly 50/50 weight distribution made it an ABSOLUTELY legit sports car and excellent boulevard cruiser.
The first and if I’m not mistaken the only, 100% Porsche design
I remember seeing the brochure in the waiting room at my doctor’s office. I was 12yo. I was in awe of the silhouette. This probably put Porsche on the map for me than the 911 - even though it was already in radar.
Excellent video and a refreshing approach.
A perfectly staged video for a great car! The background of the Berlin Kongresshalle, and even the retro-outfit of the presenter - it all fits.
Briefly overviewed, but still interesting and informative. I'll wait and watch for future videos for final opinion. Thanks for something different in this huge video segment.😊
1983-86 928s is the best looking Porsche ever.
Beautiful car. Fantastic video.
My favourites are 911, 928 and 968.
I was take surprised they 968 didn't do better because I thought they were so colourful, fun and affordable
you might appreciate our video on the 993-generation 911 then.
@@AutoDidaktFilms I did. It was fantastic. Thank you. Excellent work from you .
Thank you very much. Truth be told, others simply are much better at driving fast.
Excellent video!
Fantatic video! :) The 928 is such a misunderstood car!
great video!
I own 2, very nice automobiles.
Love this. Love my 88 S4
Porsche 928!!!!❤🎉
I always loved this car. I wanted one so badly. But they are too old now, and I just don't have the time to be fixing it when it breaks. That'd have been a fun project in my youth.
The 928 isn't for novice mechanics
928 = the most beautiful P. At least for me. I would love to have it one day.
Styling acceptance challenge reminds one of the unloved Ferrari Scaglietti
Fabulous cars, I loved my 928’s (three of them). Can’t say the same of my 911 wide body cabriolet
Next video please BMW 7er E32 or BMW 5er E34 or BMW 3er E36 or BMW 7er E38 or BMW 5er E39 or BMW 3er E46 Pleaaase 😊
I love zhis thing or better this being since I saw it in the early 80s for the first time. Its future on wheels.
Was it ever really designed to replace the 911? Stunning car and example!
Hans “Brown” applies especially to that example 😉
Was Is will always be my favourite car, and if you want to drive a Thousand plus kilometres in a day this IS the car
last night i had a dream about a rear engined v12 928.....
In an alternative universe, someone put the 928 engine and interior into the 944, and the perfect Porsche was born!
The 944 has a boyish design
I assume there is fair to mention the overall input from another talented member of the Lapin´s design team, who is Jiri Kuhnert.
If you care to watch until the end, you'll spot Kuhnert's name among the members of the design team listed.
I own a 82 and 89s4. I still get asked at stoplights, "What is it"?
