Thing is, the '98 defence only conceded 2 goals and kept clean sheets against Italy and Brazil. He only mentioned it in passing but it was much more solid than the '18 one (despite the '18 being pretty good). On the other hand, the '98 team struggled to score goals, while the '18 didn't, despite enjoying a quieter pace under Deschamps' strategy. It makes sense to have more defenders from '98 and attackers from '18.

Thing is, the '98 defence only conceded 2 goals and kept clean sheets against Italy and Brazil. He only mentioned it in passing but it was much more solid than the '18 one (despite the '18 being pretty good). On the other hand, the '98 team struggled to score goals, while the '18 didn't, despite enjoying a quieter pace under Deschamps' strategy.
It makes sense to have more defenders from '98 and attackers from '18.
