    Awesome video man! I didn't wanted to take it apart myself because I break things easily. One way to get more run time from onyx is to add a higher mAh battery. Instead of 2600mAh, maybe 4800mAh. Almost double the run time.
    Thanks again for sharing the video.

    Hey man, glad to see your video here because I want to take mine apart as well in an attempt to add the biggest missing feature of this system...which is an AUXILIARY INPUT jack!! I'm surprised you don't mention that along with all the ideas you have mentioned. Would love to see you make that happen and make a video on it! I would think you just need to find the right spot on the board to solder in the missing headphone jack so the signal still gets fully processed and played through the whole system (as opposed to just soldering straight to the speakers or something). Anyways, glad to see someone at least get a teardownlm of this beast on video!

    Thanks for the video! Inspired me to take mine apart and upgrade the battery. We use ours for 9+ hours at a time without an easy way to charge it. I replaced the anemic 2600mah battery with 3x 3000mah (18650s) batteries in parallel. You're right, plenty of room inside.

    • @allansoria3478
      @allansoria3478 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jkinlv With your mod on the battery, did it double the playing time. Also , planning on adding a parallel and series battery config to boost the voltage to 7.4V and increase volume on battery power. Though not sure if the charging system inside can adequately charge 7.4V.

      i plan to replace it roo...because, it's to small at 2600mAh..

    If You want to separate the legs from the body, screw type is Torx, size 10.

    Passive radiators do produce sound toy can actually tune the sound toy want coming from them by adding weight to it and different material. You are right though they are only powered by the air that the actual powered speakers move.

    Did you remove the plastic cap/cover over the metal speaker (rear passive radiator) on the back? The cover must be removed for proper speaker operation. It's nearly undetectable, but is there!! You have to remove it carefully. if you don't feel the aluminium stretch marks, then the plastic cover is there.

  • @andrewnash8139
    @andrewnash8139 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The screw inside the leg is a torx9 one in a standard set should be long enough. Make sure you get one before one of your legs breaks off like mine did...

    I have the Harman/Kardon Onyx 4 and the passive radiators actually make a huge difference! I blocked them off with my hands and the difference is massive. I did the battery mod as well on my HK Onyx 4 as well. I replaced the battery with a 12,000 mAh battery (a flat cell type lithium polymer, 2 6,000 mAh battries that are matched to eachother). I also made it tonwjere tje usb port charges the internal batteries as well.

    Thanks for sharing this helpful video. I'm about to buy this onyx studio and was already thinking of upgrading the battery. Now I see it is really possible with your video. Another same battery in series might double the playing time, though not sure where to purchase that kind of battery. Seems a rare cyclinder li-on type. Another upgrade I'm thinking is adding an aux input of some sort to the pre amp section. Do you think it is possible? I'm thinking of taking it to a tech if ever.

  • @jameservi8701

      I'm not planning on removing mine but from what I can see it looks like a percision philipshead screwdriver. I think the biggest issues is you have to find one long enough to reach the back of the legs

    So the front "woofer" is a passive radiator as well? Those two midwoofers are producing all of the bass? Wouldn't have known that without this teardown. So thank you. Looks like it shouldn't be too hard to upgrade those mids with something better (vifa, peerless, etc...) from partsexpress.
    I was worried about reports of people only having the stock battery last 15 minutes. But, considering the ease of opening, and the fact that these can be had refurb now for $80, I think I've found my new bluetooth speaker.

    Passive resonators do what a reflex port would do, but without taking much valuable air space thus allowing the box to be smaller. I would not recommend adding stuff inside the case, as it lessens the air space and will change the low end sound of the speaker. Deepest notes will be dampened and some unwanted spikes may appear somewhere ~100 - 200Hz

    Thanks for this video, your a gent.
    I have just received my onyx studio, I am quite pleased with the overall sound but to be honest I really would have prefered the newer non studio version. Unfortunately it was double the price. I would have really appreciated the AUXILIARY INPUT jack so I could plug my Astell & Kern JR straight in. Also bluetooth 4.0 instead of 3.0 the studio has, just wondering if anyone thought of replacing the bluetooth circuit board with the updated 4.0 giving better sound & range. Lastly I beg someone to do a tutorial on full specs on a replacement pack of batteries and video guide on how to replace or add to the paltry 2600mha enclosed battery.
    I see in the comments that there are several people who are very keen on a follow up to help them along...

      I actually ended up taking it back, since my work decided on a no-speakers policy just after I got this. The possibilities were honestly endless though, tons of spare room, very powerful amp, I would've started with a large extra battery pack with a usb output to charge your device, but speaker wise im not really sure. Let me know if you do change anything, I'd love to see a video. Upgraded speakers would be crazy in that thing.

    • @chrispboi19
      @chrispboi19 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The micro USB port is not a power source. There is a completely different jack for your power. the micro USB is to, when Bluetooth is updated, allow you to plug your speaker into your computer and upgrade it.

    Hello, unsure if I am in the right place to ask this question, but I have had my onyx speaker for over a year now, and for some reason it still connects to my bluetooth (can hear the connection), but after it connects no sound is coming out. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so, so you know how to fix it? My sound is turned up, and I've tried other phones, but nothing is happening after the connection is there. Thank you :-)

    I got high and plugged the black connector into the white connector and after 19v into the 5v socket mine is completely dead. The inside is NOT idiot proof, beware.

    No way its just one 18650 2600mah battery! Impressed but just how little.
    You can easily get 3400mah and then parallel 2 or more, you'll be over 10 hours playtime.
    Did you end up modding?

    • @BriansGarage
      @BriansGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately no, I wasn't able to use it at work like I had planned, and I already have a zillion other means of audio at home so I had no use for it, I just returned it.

    • @Brunomills
      @Brunomills 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohk. Mine should arrive today. I will try and mod for two 3400mah in parallel. Extrapolating the time and capacity of original. I should be able to get 13 hours with the new setup. :)

    Any ideas for leg replacement?

    • @BriansGarage
      @BriansGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately I ended up returning it, couldn't use it at work like I planned, so I never did get to modify it at all. I would've probably found some type of hinged setup so I could fold the leg(s) in when not using, or possibly even some kind of short telescoping rod (2) to replace the legs it had, so Id have been able to push them flat with the speaker when carrying it.

      +herry yohan the battery does have a life span. if it isn't charging, time for a new one. battery in this video i tired to see type of battery but he moved too fast, i opened mine up and its LC18650 go on ebay, theres tonz but will require some tinkering to attach cables to it. if your whole hk isn't powering on, get a different charger. the specs are on the back sticker it should say (on mine it does) 19v 2a

    • @allansoria3478
      @allansoria3478 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rion I was thinking about this too. There might be current and voltage regulator inside for the battery. I am thinking to add more batteries in series / parallel to come up with around 7.4v 10,800 mah pack. Though not sure if the internal charging system for the batts can handle 7.4v.
