  • I made a video to help explain how the Ford Factory Radio removal tools work. This radio was removed from a 2001 Ford Escape. Im pretty sure the radios are standardized for the past 10 years or so. Not sure of the exact dates, but im sure you can google that info.

Hour video was the best on how to get it out. No one else even mentioned that you need to move the removal tool outward. Thanks for your help

@QuantumDesignz I used a dremel tool with a cut off wheel. I just cut a small groove into the wire. It is pretty thin, so just take your time and be careful not to cut yourself. You may be able to use a hack saw if you don't have a dremel tool. If you don't have a dremel tool, It would be much cheaper to purchase the removal tools from a dealer. They are about $5 new. I just made my own because I didn't want to wait for delivery. Good Luck!

I'm in Australia and have a Falcon AUII 2001 and it worked, didn't have a dremel so had to make do with a chainsaw chain grinder and flat file but it worked !! Thanks Mate !!

Thanks a lot. I purchased the tools and had been pulling straight back. The tool kept pulling out. After seeing your video, I walked to the truck and pulled it out in about 10 seconds. Our truck is a 2007 model and it worked.

I actually just removed my ford factory radio using 4 3-inch steel nails. Just put one in each hole & spread them out using my thumb. Worked like a charm. I made no notch.

SEE!!! THANKYOU! -_- I've been looking everywhere how to release these radios and all the 'help' website say "Just use a nail, alan key etc and it will come free..." NONE of them mention a notch. Cheers !!!

Ah-ha I was planning to make a couple from coat hangers too.
Just tried a few small screwdrivers but can get any purchase when I ping the clips back.
Thought it best to double check on the old internets the way the clips work first :)

used factory tool but pushed in too far. radio WILL NOT come out. At least your video explains how the tabs work and I can start trying to figure out what to do next (good work by the way, the close ups help a LOT). Can you provide the exact length the rod goes in from the front of the radio?

Thanks! I had tried it with just the coat hanger and no notches and it wouldn't work so I strongly suggest notching them as in the video....

Do you insert the wire tools into the stereo slots with the "notched ends" facing the outside of the vehicle or towards the stereo? I am having difficulty removing my stereo and knowing this will help!

Do you (or the owner of the truck) still have the factory stereo? If it works right I may buy it if the price is right.
    Thanks, Stan

Oh though now I see someone mention Allen keys, that might work well with the ball ended ones.
    Good video anyway.

I found this video is useful. However, My ford 2002 Laser has different socket. Same method but more tricky. I end up disassemble the whole lot in the front section of working out how to take it out............................Hints, my model needs 3 screw drivers on each side or 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom. the middle hole can be ignored.
