Rewatched the 2001 all star game. It was tight at the end. Kobe had the ball for the last shot. Wouldve been tough but a shot we're used to kobe taking. He made the right play and passed it to timmy. Against good d, timmy misses the 6ftr. West loses. After that moment I doubt kobe ever again passes up that shot
Man Kobe used to always do things like that. Double pump fakes, turnaround jump shots, freaking pass to hisself off the backboard lol , Every time you think you have him covered he does something outta nowhere to answer. His bag was hella deep he just didn’t go into it all game every game. He showcased his versatility when he needed to.
I think it’s because he was a basketball historian. Remember him talking about stealing a movement from Jerry West, another from Olajuwon, and stories about talking with Jordan over call or text at random times in the morning/day,evening analyzing aspects of the game and how to conquer them/conquer with them
Kobe was the most optimized physics player of all time. He put so much energy & force with his offensive arsenal, he gave defenses fits with the intricate science he had in his game. With Kobe’s high force & energy, he gave the opposing defense negative motion & behavior with their bad body language & the defense constantly shifting in bad positions
Honestly the game 7 against Boston imo showed that, his shot wasn’t falling. But his rebounding impacted the game and honestly was probably the difference. He wanted it more.
That play is still one of the most resonant memories I have of watching Kobe in the finals. That play, to me, explained what Kobe is as a person, a crucial Game 4 in the crucial minutes in the NBA Finals, 3 defenders on him, and he finds a way.
I remember watching that game live and thinking wow, the Magic are actually going to even the series. As Kobe started his spin, I was thinking, ok he really is just gonna try and win this 1v4. And then the drop off to a trailing Pau. Unbelievable play. And like JJ said, it happened so quickly that it made the comeback possible.
The narrative only exists because of Shaq's critique and the existence of Lebron James. If Kobe started playing 10 years earlier no one would have said a word. Hell, they'd say he's a willing passer
But if he was known as a pass first player that play wouldn’t work. Dwight would have waited for the trailer instead of trying to block Kobe. Knowing Kobe, I bet he intentionally wanted to be known as the guy who doesn’t pass to give him an edge in emergency situations like this.
Not only this, but 6 APG for someone in the Triangle Offense is actually great. Only three (3) players have done this under Phil (Kobe, Jordan, Pippen). People who insult his APG don't know about basketball or basketball systems. If "hockey assists" were a thing in the NBA the triangle would be insane in the stat. You can't look at numbers and ignore context.
When Kobe put his mind to it, he was one of the best passers in the league. In an offense like the Triangle, one guy doesn’t rack up a bunch of assist.
Exactly. Scottie Pippen was the point forward with the Bulls. And even with MJ taking most of the shots, Pippen never put up huge assist numbers. With that offense, everyone was expected to be a playmaker on the court. Not just one guy.
JJ is right on. I remember that game, I remember that play. When it happened I jumped out my seat. I knew at that point LA had chance. KB was the truth. Great example JJ.
I used to say Feed Da Spanish Monster!! Pau was great. About that play JJ before Kobe ever drove, spinned around, or passed he set it up by lulling the defense to sleep because he wasn't driving at the basket he made it appear as if he was going to pull back & wait on the cavalry! He was going parallel to the rim like driving towards the baseline so the defense probably felt like we have 4 guys back & he's going to the sideline this play is over with. But Kobe like the superhero he was did something that they didn't expect. Long live the B.O.A.T. greatest is about accolades but he definitely the Best to ever lace up😉
Jj was overlooked alot during his career, he was arguably one of the best 3 point shooters the game has ever saw during his time, especially while he was in Orlando.
I always liked when players have a podcast or show over sports analysis they asked the better questions & they have a more understanding of things in sports
Just now finding this video and I've never related to a video title more than this one- I've been telling my friends and anyone who I talk basketball with for years how underrated this Kobe play is. The combination of the Lakers likely losing this game if they don't score on the possession + how beautiful it is to watch Kobe spin, have 4 Magic players collapse on him, and then pass back to Gasol for the wide open dunk is fantastic. There was also a narrative back then that Kobe wouldn't pass in situations like this & that he would always force heat-check jumpers, which just made it more satisfying to see him come up with such a beautiful assist in a critical moment in the finals. Good stuff, JJ!
There’s guys that makes me wish they had a championship much after their career than I wanted them to have it during . JJ is at the top of that list for me .
Knowing Kobe, I bet he intentionally wanted to be known as the guy who doesn’t pass just to give him an edge in emergency situations like this. He always kept his cards close to his chest. His own teammate didn’t even expect it.

That play that Jj Reddick spoke on of Kobe driving to the rim with the spin move kick back to Pau for the dunk in THE FINALS is the type of plays that the Mamba made through out his career, plays in which M.J himself wouldn't try is what separates Kobe from the rest and those type of plays is one of the reasons why Kobe is the 🐐 in my opinion.
Fisher 3 got the glory but this play was it for me. We should've lost this game and homeboy dribbled 1v4 into traffic, 360 and behind the back to a trailing center? I used to try to look for this play on TH-cam it was hard to find, that's how underappreciated that play was.
