I really like the direction SMSL has been taking things. They seem to be listening to the audiophile and enthusiast market and trying to make products that fill those needs despite us being a smaller segment of the market as a whole. There are a lot of China based hi-fi manufacturers that are making seriously good looking gear and making it more accessible to the North American buyers then ever before! It's a great time to be into audio!

Would be interesting to see how this would compare 2 diy Nelson pass amp camp 1.8 mono block class a amplifiers. About the same at $327 per amp but you must assemble. They will be more substantial and take up more space than this amp once built. I think you will get 15 watts of class a and perhaps more flexibility and what you can drive. It's still low watt class a with the same warning that these amps need to be paired with higher efficiency speakers. Can't go wrong with a simple single ended class a amp from Nelson pass!

If you are intrigued by this unit check out reviews of the Keces E40. It's small enough to be used in a near field set up but has enough power for a main 2 channel system. At $600 USD, my only cons are the lack of XLR input and the tiny plastic remote.

I m very sure majority of audiphiles won't mind having bigger sized enclosure with proper heat sinks for better components lifespan. With such a great review for its sound quality..its quite disappointing to see why SMSL chosed to limit themselves in the design..

Mine distorts heavily after 60 on the volume, granted I was testing with low efficiency speakers just to see what I could still get out of it. I listen loud so even with high efficiency speakers it isn't enough. But either way for what this cost it should be clean to the top and its unusable beyond 55 - 60 on the volume, so it has even less usable power than advertised.

I think I'd rather buy a decent second hand class AB amplifier like Yamaha A-S1000 or Denon 1520AE for example.
I run a big Denafrips DAC so nothing against Chi-Fi but I have a feeling a lot of the time they develop stuff just to please the eye of European and American buyers - Class A, machined chassis, extremely high SINAD DAC's and so on without really focussing on sound.

Folks laugh at the low wattage class a stuff. Typically ones that will be not be pairing this with appreciate speakers. In case it hasn't been made clear, you need to be using high efficiency speakers with this. I'm into diy audio. More specifically low powered class a amplifiers. With all the heat demands of class a, chassis and heatsinks are typically one of the most expensive parts of the build along with the power supply. Good heatsinks are not cheap. It's apparent with this unit, instead of going with traditional extruded heatsinks they use the entire chassis as one heatsink.

overheating is something that engineers would have caught quite easily. Im more concerned about what compromises they made to get it to stay cooled.

@@Mr0Tubby you can fry an egg 🍳 on it so they weren’t able to keep it cooled

It sounds and works very good. It’s better than my other amps costing over £2000 each.
