I miss you Jim , I remember when you were a young boy, up on 6th street, in Sutherlin. You gave me my first guitar lessons, You had that pretty blue Gibson. Your dad had that cream lime ggreen gretch. I think there was those fancy tailpieces. Life was good, Gloria and Jim still live in the old house, I think. I miss those days.

Gidday Jim I too have been toying with learning to read. I've been playing guitar and bass for a long time using tab. Just about to crank over 65. Not sure if I'm too old but think I might buy yr reading book n maybe creating jazz bass lines. I love playing, prob a little over playing, as mentioned in one of yr videos, but love playing running lines. Hopefully it won't be too expensive to ship to Australia. Cheers n tks

Great video, Jim! I've been playing bass guitar for 33 years and I just recently made the decision to learn sight reading... correctly, patiently, but only after watching your videos. I recently purchased "Reading In Bass Clef" and your methodology just makes sense. It's a given that I'm wanting that jazz bass book next. Thanks for all you do!

Thanks Jim - this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Your enthusiasm and passion for music is inspirational. I would say "have fun" but it is clear to see you already are :-)

Now I know what dedication means. Great work ! But I wonder why you write books since when I listen to you everything is clear. Maybe some secrets never told are in your books.
I'm wondering if you are not one of the first bass guitar teacher of History.
The first serious bass method I've seen was from Francis Darizcuren maybe you know him.
I think your pedagogy is better although we don't speak the same language.
Every time I'm watching one of your lesson, I learn something even if I already know about you're talking, but I don't know, I feel more confident after that.
You give something to the people, something I can't name but something great but in a very simple form.
I should buy one of your book maybe.

Got the book - playing along with it now. I still have to stop reading as a treble ... when I get to example 13 you make a footnote that I am struggling with. You say transport each example by half step. So ordinarily I would shift my left hand towards the neck but you seem to be suggesting something slightly different. So in notation you have finger 1 for the F and 3 for the G ... makes sense. Then you suggest keep 1 on the F, so 2 is the F#. So the G# will be in 4. Ah I think I get it ... if you shift (like I suggested) nothing covers the original 0 ... which was open string. But by using 2nd finger in the F# then the 1st finger covers the A#/Bb .. is that it :-)

Hi Real Bass lessons i was watching your video regarding the cycle of 4ths and i was wondering. Since it's called the cycle of "4ths"then all the tones in the cycle must be major right or did i get something wrong? have a good day ;3

Not quite the correct terminology. Watch my earlier vids on music theory.

Which one of your books should a beginner start with?

I would recommend the book, "Reading In Bass Clef" as well the accompanying video series, "Following The Book Reading In Bass Clef." www.stinnettmusicdownloadables.com/Stinnett_Music_Downloadables/follow_book_ribc.html
I am confident this will do you very well.

Hi Jim. I notice you sometimes use some great looking black strings. What type are they please? On a fretless would you recommend flatwounds?

      Labella, Black Nylon Tape wound.

Real Bass Lessons . So I ordered a set for my birthday... then my wife suggested to wait until Xmas ... fortunately I got a tax rebate so my two guitar purchases were effectively free :-). The la bella are amazing. Just had to realise they don't have as much tension as stock strings so had to relax truss rod on new fretless. And here's the super cool part. Your CoF practice means my fingers are already falling darn close to an acceptable pitch. Thanks again to whatever cosmic forces collaborated to cause your existence Jim (and all that has been created thru you).

      Glad you are having success.
Practicing the cycle of 4ths, daily, on the fretted bass will, while paying attention to your fingers, hand, and arm, will allow you to build a solid posture that will easily transfer to the fretless bass. Playing the fretless bass in tune, is all about your hand posture, and muscle memory in shifting. It is not a matter of "hearing", like most contemporary teaching proclaims.

For those who do not know, Jim has passed away. He was a wonder.
