Mike Portnoy said the main reason he left was because he felt like he was running the whole show. Clearly they are doing fine in his absence, and they sound just like they did before. I think maybe the rest of them just needed "mother" to abandon the nest so they could spread their wings and fly. They always had the potential, we can see it better now that the crutches are off. Perhaps one day he will come back, and they will work together more, instead of leaving all the work to Mike.
TheReaverOfDarkness He didn't felt like he was running the whole show. He WAS running the whole show. It's prety well known that MP is a control freak. He managed most of the stuff himself, including the bootleg catalog, was the band's spokesperson, filmed and edited all of DT's making off videos along with his own 'drumcam' videos and produced all the albums as well. But, that didn't stopped him from doing a shitload of side projects. MP himself is the reason of his own demise.
