How Playmobil designs and makes toys -
There are over 2 billion Playmobil toys being played with by children all around the world - equal to almost 1/3 of the world’s population.
And every single one (100 million a year) is made in Dietenhofen, just outside Zirndorf, Germany.
Playmobil - the story sounds as American as a Hollywood fairly tale: from a medium sized company on the verge of bankruptcy in the early 1970s to Germany’s most profitable toy manufacturer. Yet in the beginning, Playmobil was nothing more than one more product in the long history of the Franconian firm geobra Brandstätter. However it was a product which would exceed all expectations, which would make geobra famous and successful the world over, and one without which many children’s worlds would be less colourful and rich in fantasy. (from ‘Playmobil, The Story of a Smile’).
Hans Beck, the former Head of Development at Geobra, has often been called "The Father of PLAYMOBIL®". Before the very first PLAYMOBIL® toys were introduced at the International Nürnberg Toy Fair in 1974, he had spent three years developing the product.
While fine-tuning the now famous archetypical head of the figures, Hans Beck paid a lot of attention to children's drawings. When a child draws a human character, the head is always drawn with exaggerated proportions. Additionally the eyes and mouth are always there in children's drawings, but a nose is often omitted. These valuable observations influenced the design of the subsequent prototypes for the original 1974 PLAYMOBIL® figure.

I had the victorian dollhouse as a kid in the early '90s and I wish I never would have gotten rid of it. It was GORGEOUS.

"Kids will not grow that right way if they sit in front of a computer all day long... they need to play."
The same is probably true for adults so... I'm off to play!

Indeed..... But on the other hand, Playmobil did make it's Clicky' Figures in 1974 before LEGO made their minifigures later in 1978

Play Mobil is way better than Lego what I hate about Lego is when you touch it it breaks into 1M Lego bricks

Funny that no one in Britain I talked to, when I was studying there, knew about Playmobil. Playmobil is the quintessential European toy for European kids.
