Checking SWR on New Nagoya VHF UHF Antenna.

  • After breaking my Nagoya NL-770S VHF UHF antenna I bought two replacements and checked the SWR after installation on my Land Cruiser 70. The antenna was spot-on right out of the box, so not much to show, but the procedure is pretty simple. I suggest having a look at the Nano VNA antenna analyser for this, or using a regular VHF SWR meter.

Funny that you should do this today... I bought 5 of these a few years ago for $4.95 each. I just gave one of them to a friend today. Used an "L" bracket, screwed to the side of his aluminum awning on the back of his home. Perfect SWR's and got him back on the air again at his QTH. Thanks for all that you do and share with us.

a 'porcupine' in the making! well, as long as it works!
for those who don't know, a porcupine is a vehicle covered in vertical antennas.

    Great little setup,
Just wondering if you could put a mark on the antenna for a particular radio and or frequency for ease of future setup?

Would be nice to know if the SWR setting on the VHF is then the same on the UHF if using the antenna for a dual band radio.

What SO-239 mount is that on the bonnet/hood? Looks like it gives a bit of support for mounting on thin metal, which is good.

I can understand the choice for a permanent fixture on the car, but wouldn't a magmount be more versatile? For instance when you'd want to change cars or get a (temporary) fixed location. Your opinion please. 73's de NL134.

For me not really... For a newer car maybe... This is an old truck and If I want to operate somewhere else, I have other antennas for that... I have multiple radios and antennas, so not a factor. If I had just one, a mag mount would serve me well.

Salut Gil, pour ton info, je viens de decouvrir que Sirio fait des antennes bi-bande pour 11m et 2m si ca t'interesse. Il se peut que j'en achete une, car j'utilise ces 2 bandes.

Gill when you do the SWR TEST TRY IT WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND THE DOOR CLOSED, YOU WILL GET 2 DIFFERENT READINGS, TRY IT ON UHF AND VHF. WITH DOORS OPEN AND CLOSED. SWR WILL DROP.

@@RadioPrepper Because your car is the ground plane, by opening your door/ doors. You reduce the ground plane, I could see you had your door open.

Interesting! I must find time to verify that. The theoretical minimum radial length for a quarter wave monopole is just a bit larger than a quarter wave. The conducting surface of that hood/bonnet is certainly a large enough radial area for VHF, and easily big enough for UHF. (But it's not really big enough for the CB antenna, so I guess its base loading coil takes that into account). Fixing the "Nagoya" antenna closer to one edge of the ground plane as in this case, may have a small effect that would be interesting to measure (or simulate).

    • @RadioPrepper
      @RadioPrepper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The position probably skews the radiation pattern towards the left of the car...

@@RadioPrepper I've seen a gentleman use one of these aerials, he made note of the adjustment rod up & down, make sure the rod is all the way home, to the btm, his SWR was about 1-7 he nipped 3mm off top radial, then SWR dropped to 1-5 ,then one more little nip off top radial SWR went down to 1-3. So if you nipped 2mm off more, and it starts to rise a little that's when you use that one inch adjustment you have to bring it back down to 1-3. Radioham is all about experimenting.

To bad you did not test it on 70cm. I had one exactly the same, works fine on 2m but 70cm is a disaster. The one winding coil in the middle is also shortened by the antenna itself, does not do anything! Why is it there? As I work on 70 cm a lot I went for a Comet antenna which gives me great readings on both bands. But since this is probably not a genuine Nagoya, maybe the original does work ok.

The little coil piece is just cosmetic……may as well remove it and test how far you can throw it.
