    Once I had the same problem. In the middle section (the "L") where a connection problem to the upper radial.
    The lower section is working then as a 1/4 wavelength for UHF.
    In normal cases it should be 3/4 wavelength for UHF.
    The hole antenna is in VHF mode is a slightly shortened 1/4 wavelength antenna.

    Thanks for the very interesting video.
    I think this antenna imitates the diamond NR-770S.
    The NR-770S has a loading coil in the middle, but the NL-770S is an imitation because the insulator is not sandwiched in the center of the coil.
    So I would be happy if you could make a video comparing the two.

    Hello Gil, two weeks ago I buy Nagoya NL 770S for 4.50 GBP. The SWR is similar to yours and works, well let's say Ok. I still think it's a fake antenna and not even close good "on the air " as my old Diamond AZ 510.

    I have bought 4 Nagoya Antennas.. I think 2 are fakes. 3 came in the soft plastic bags.. with Nagoya Hologram stickers on them. The 3 were for hand held radios and are dual band. 1 didn't work at all and just didn't look right. 1 Seems to work OK but it doesn't looks genuine. Another one works very well and the bag it came in also had a QR sticker on it for Nagoya website. It looks and feels the real deal. NA-701 is the model.. BUT the bag just has Nagoya labels that are stickers.. All the actual printing doesn't say brand names or addresses. I also bought a Mini Mag mount. This im sure its also fake. It came in a poly bag with a folded cardboard label that was stapled closed. The label did have the Nagoya brand name and its address on it but the antenna is very cheap and the magnet base is very weak. Also the swr is 2:5 and radios seem to be quite deaf when i use it.
    They do say, " You get what you pay for " but paying a lot or paying less doesn't mean your not going to be sold a fake. I don't mind a fake if it works. !
    At the end of they day you are playing what i call Chinese roulette. Some times your number comes up and your a winner others times you loose.
    Most of the time with Chinese stuff Ive been a winner. Just a few times Ive lost. The worse part is that there are Chinese makers who copy stuff that is all ready a copy / fake and then just make it even worst.

    Based on the packaging alone, I’d say you got counterfeits. I’ve purchased a few Nagoyas at HRO and the plastic sleeves and label don’t look anywhere near that cheap. Glad you can use one of them though.

    BTW I gave away 3 Nagoya Fakes a few months ago,.. the market is flooded, unfortunately, and we wonder why China has a good economy, not a level playing field by far. I purchased 3 antenna from usa 2 weeks ago, n stuck jn customs, in Bulgaria,.. what to do?

    Hi Gil. I have a couple of Nagoya whip antennae for my Baofeng UV5Rs, one is genuine, one is fake. From the UK the only place at the time that did genuine ones was a company in the US, might be different now.

      Yes I think so, it's pretty quiet around where I live so just trying to find a marginal station to give me a comparison report. I don't have an analyser suitable to fit in line so can't check the SWR.

    I've had similar poor results with "Nagoya" branded Handie SMA antennas recently.
    An NA771 was 4.5:1 on 2metres & 3.5:1 on 70cms so again i'd be wary of using if you value your finals, but then i bought the same antenna with the RETEVIS brand on and that was under 1.5 on 70cms and just over 1.5 on 2m & in use it performs very well indeed, Rx is 2 S points over the stock antenna.
    Sadly a few other Retevis antennas i tried have done so great, their brand of stubby SR805S is around 1.5 to 1 on 70cms but on 2m is 9.9 to 1....
    The Retevis RT20 mini-flexi stubby is over 3.5:1 on all bands
    And a final "Nagoya" (maybe) I tested was a micro-mag UT-108, i had one already that performed ok (under 1.5:1 on VHF & UHF) but i wanted another with SMA-F connector to save messing around with adaptors, this one look identical (at first glance) but the SWR is over 2.5:1 on all bands! When i compared the two side by side, the good one has a small coil approx 25mm from the base, the new high swr one has the same coil but almost 50mm from the base...so perhaps if i can get it apart i can trim it down? I will try & see.
    Incidentally the packaging on my 771 was very high quality, even had a hologram sticker on it, but despite this the swr is terrible so one for the junk box, not worth the expense to return.

    • @RadioPrepper
      @RadioPrepper  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had bought the same type of antenna off of eBay, about $7 US, it tested out OK, however, after using it for a few weeks I moved it on to the APRS radio, mainly because it wouldn't fold over for low clearance. I think with the flood of cheap SDR radios we are seeing, we will see a lot more of these knock-off antennas as well.

    Thanks, Gil. The internet is full of videos, about fake antennas and radios. At the end one must do a lot of investigation, how the recognize the real product. Of course, local shops here, must make a profit, but sometimes prices are over the top. I ordered an original Nagoya 771 antenna via Ebay. As You probably know, Nagoya is made in Taiwan. So I ordered the antenna from a Ham Radio shop in Taiwan, via Ebay. The price was right. Some Chinese sellers, sold the same antenna, via Ebay, for a few Dollars. Very bad situation and it is not better via Amazon.

    Ever wondered why that 770s has a coil? the original diamond 770's used the coil to seperate the two elements, but this antenna has a straight connection of metal with a coil around it??

    Your method of checking is obviously not "Test Lab Standard", but is good enough to show up any defective units. Nagoya VHF/UHF dual band antennas are probably the most heavily faked ones available on-line. I have seen some of them opened up. The counterfeiters often manage to successfully copy the basic construction, but the workmanship and soldering is usually extremely poor. Shorted turns and open circuit connections are common. And of course there is absolutely no final testing! The only real solution is to buy from a Nagoya accredited dealer and pay their markup.

      but, as i say above, i suspect even the Genuine Nagoya, Diamond or whatever make you buy are all manufactured in China to cut costs.....which they do, but of course the quality simply doesn't come close to Japanese/US/EU made.

    • @hectorpascal
      @hectorpascal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@j.cheeverloophole9029 The problem with Chinese manufacturing is that in their rush to produce in great volume and at a rock bottom price, they virtually eliminate all inspection and final testing. JP/EU/US companies KNOW that their reputation depends on return custom, and will guarantee their product by tests.
      The #1 way to uncover faulty manufacturing techniques is to inspect and test products both DURING and AFTER manufacture. When they source from "good" Chinese manufacturers, JP/EU/US companies will specify minimum tests before the product leaves the factory, and then carry out their own final testing. Counterfeiters naturally don't have the same contractual obligations to perform ANY testing before delivery!

      Lots of fake Diamonds out there too. I have a great mobile whip, dual band, it has served me well since the 90's, decided to replace it last year, bought one from eBay...terrible swr and performance but build quality looked great, bought another from a ham shop, it was great for about 9 months then started corroding badly and fell apart....so were they genuine or fake? Who knows...but they weren't close to my old 1990 version....I suspect the 90's version was genuine high quality Japanese...and nowadays, even genuine ones are cheap rubbish made in China. I wish manufacturers would realise we'd be happy to pay more for Japanese quality instead of Chinese garbage.

      @@RadioPrepper Not sure where you get your antennas from - my suggestion would be to order from a radio dealer (rather than Amazon). I buy a ton of stuff from Amazon, but usually steer clear of radio related stuff unless I know it is coming from a reputable source. Not sure if you are able to buy directly from a radio supplier where you are at? Not trying to disparage Nagoya, but if you go to eHAM and read the reviews, you will see a ton of 4's and 5's for both Diamond and Comet, and mostly 3's for Nagoyas. That may be due to the fact that there may be more counterfeit Nagoyas out there and people are getting bad antennas. Who knows?
