    I saw Kenny in concert once. He said that in a lot of songs that tell a story, there's someone you feel sorry for. In "Lucille," he said, some people feel sorry for the husband, some feel sorry for Lucille, some feel sorry for the four hungry children, "and I met one weird person who felt sorry for the crop in the field."

      There is a funny and very poignant story in Ken Dryden's book "The Game" about the song Lucille and Montreal Canadiens hard working forward Rejean (Reggie) Houle. The Game is one of the best sports books ever written and it tells of the team being on the bus and them singing Lucille when it would come on the radio. But they would stop because they realized it was "Reggie's song" and he sang it by himself with great sincerity. The book is worth it alone just to read the story about Guy Lapointe's hair. Actually I think you can see that story in the Google preview. I LOL every time I read it, I recommend you to go find it :)

    By far, the next Kenny Rogers song should be Coward of the County. Also there's Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town. And also...Love Will Turn You Around. Also check out his early hits with the First Edition, What Condition My Condition Was In, and Reuben James.

    Amber: "Why are we like so invested in this story right now?"
    Because Kenny Rogers doesn't just sing a song, or tell a story. He plucks at your heartstrings. Gets you right in the 'feels'. All the great singers do that.

    I grew up in rural Canada - I knew dozens of Lucilles. Some stayed in miserable unfulfilled lives because of kids, obligations or (most often) poverty. As I got older I understood and identified with Lucille more than I did with the two males in the triangle. She isn't awful - she just wants a life of her own. Men walked away from their obligations for centuries and their women and children suffered for it. Lucille is no worse than any of them - to the contrary, her four children are with a man of property and a livelihood. I waste no tears on the husband - he doesn't ask her to come home because he loves her - he's more affronted that she left him with kids he clearly is unwilling or incapable of looking after and, oh, by the way, its harvest time.
    "Mighty inconvenient of you, Lucille. You couldn't wait for another six months to leave?"

    "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" is a great song. There is a LIVE version of Kenny singing it when he was young and in THE First Edition (hadn't gone solo yet)..You should watch that live video. GREAT STORYTELLING! Also, "Coward of the County" is another great storytelling song by Kenny. PS Both Kenny's songs, "The Gambler" and "Coward of the County" were made into movies. PPS I'm pretty sure in the RUBY video, he plays bass (I think it's a bass)... Oh and he has long hair and an earring. Oh my, he looks so HOT 🔥...

    For a great story song, more Western than Country, you should listen to El Paso by Marty Robbins. A studio version would be best in order to emphasize, not only his soothing voice, but also Grady Martin's brilliant Spanish guitar accompaniment. El Paso was released in 1959 and was the first number one song of the sixties, topping both the pop AND the country/western charts the first couple of weeks of the decade.

    When I was a teenager, my dad would drag the family out to the local Elks Lodge almost every Friday night for their steak dinners. After we'd eaten, my dad would usually get on the organ and entertain whoever was still around drinking and socializing, and as I got into my later teens I would often join him on my keyboard.
    Occasionally, we would bring in outside entertainment though, and there was this one guy who did a sort of karaoke routine. He had a setup with prerecorded songs, and he'd either sing to them, or he'd play the flute or saxophones or a mix of both. And we'd have him come in and play two to three times a years, for several years.
    This was one of the songs he would sing. And every time he did, a couple of the men, the "class clowns" of the lodge, if you will, would find some random woman in the room and fall to their knees in front of her, BEGGING her not to leave them and the most overly dramatic pantomime you could imagine. And the later in the evening he waiting before finally playing this song, the more drunk the clowns got, and the more outrageous the pantomime as they begged a new "Lucille" not to leave them.

    "She Believes In Me" (1978) is a Kenny Rogers song that really shows off the strength of his vocals. He's best known for songs like "Lucille" because his voice is so appealing in soft songs like this. But I think you'll really appreciate "She Believes In Me".

    Another great story teller is Dan Fogelberg. He has "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band". Also if you want to travel back even farther try Johnny Horton "Battle of New Orleans", "North to Alaska" and "Sink the Bismarck" for starters. These are from the 50's. You will love them.

    I'm glad the two of you understood that because of the way Lucille acted toward her husband, the guy who met her in the bar just couldn't go through with his plan to be with her. I heard one reaction where they said they believed he went ahead with his original plan for the evening and they totally missed it when he said, "She was a beauty, but when she came to me, she must have thought I'd lost my mind. I couldn't hold her, the words that he told her, kept coming back time after time." Other than using a euphemism when he said "I couldn't hold her" he could not have made it any plainer that he did NOT do anything with her because as you said, her CHARACTER just turned him off because he couldn't forget how demeaning she had been toward her husband. I think the reason I love classic country music so much is that so much of it is just listening to someone tell a story.
    Some examples of great songs that tell stories are:
    Dolly Parton, Coat of Many Colors or Old Flames;
    George Jones, He Stopped Loving Her Today, The Grand Tour, or Things Have Gone to Pieces;
    Mel Tillis, Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town;
    Reba McEntire, Somebody Should Leave or Fancy;
    Tom T. Hall, Ballad of Forty Dollars, Clayton Delaney, I Love or Watermelon Wine;
    Tanya Tucker, Delta Dawn, No Man's Land, or Blood Red and Goin' Down;
    Johnny Cash, Here Comes That Rainbow Again, Cisco Clifton's Fillin' Station,
    Don't Take Your Guns to Town or Sunday Mornin Comin Down;
    Jeannie C. Riley, Harper Valley PTA;
    Willie Nelson, Seven Spanish Angels, or Always on My Mind;
    Roger Miller, Sorry Willie or Me and Bobby McGee;
    Joey and Rory, Josephine;
    Marty Robbins, El Paso, Big Iron or The Master's Call;
    The Statler Brothers, Bed of Rose's, Maple Street Memories, or Class of '57;
    Kenny Rogers, Reuben James, or Coward of the County;
    Johnny Horton, Springtime in Alaska or North to Alaska;
    Porter Wagoner, Carroll County Accident or Green, Green Grass of Home;
    Vern Gosdin, Chiseled in Stone or Set 'em Up, Joe;
    Merle Haggard, What Have you Got Planned Tonight, Diana? or Sing Me Back Home;
    Hank Williams Jr., A Country Boy Can Survive; I Looked all Over Hell, or Rainin' in My Heart;
    Hank Williams Sr. Be Careful of Stones that you Throw or I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry,
    Carrie Underwood, Jesus, Take the Wheel or Blown Away.
    Humorous songs:
    Ray Stevens, It's Me Again, Margaret or Mississippi Squirrel Revival;
    Johnny Cash, Boy Named Sue, One Piece at a Time, The One on the Left is on the Right;
    John Conlee, I Don't Remember Loving You;
    Patriotic Songs:
    Toby Keith, Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue;
    Johnny Cash, Ragged Old Flag;
    George Jones, 50,000 Names;
    The Statler Brothers, More Than a Name on a Wall.
    You wouldn't go far wrong to react to any of these songs.
