Great memories. I used to see Reading's yellow and green engines running through my hometown in Lebanon County PA on what is now Norfolk Southern's Harrisburg Line. Their coal cars had an emblem on them that proclaimed the Reading Railroad was the "World's Largest Anthracite Carrier"
Being a young railfan from the opposite coast in the tumultuous 70's, Reading and Lehigh Valley were my two favorite east coast railroads mostly because dads old Lionel set had freight cars from those lines. I was saddened to hear when Reading was rolled into Conrail, but didnt understand all the circumstances at that time. I sure appreciate these videos and can see all those railroads in action.
The Reading Railroad came down to our town/city, as far south in New Jersey, as that map was depicting (even though they didn't show all, of Cape May county), as it could go. The vicinity I'm referring to, is Wildwood NJ. I remember the Budd passenger service coming here, to 1977. That was titled, the the Reading Seashore Lines.
For a railroad that had fallen on hard times by the 1970s, it looked as though the Reading kept its locomotive fleet in good condition. And while the Reading is long gone, its spirit lives in the successful Reading and Northern.
It sure does the Reading and Northern is a super railroad. Even in the 1970's The Reading did take good care of their locomotives. They had pride in the fleet!
My uncle Pete who passed in 1967 worked for the Reading Railroad as a breakman I was told. I was young then but remember him smoking his pipe and loved the smell of the scented tobacco . Born in Trenton and raised in Ewing twp. it was nice to see a scene of Trenton and Pennington where I lived closest to back in those days. Walked the tracks between West Trenton station and Pennington with friends back in the 70's. Thanks for the informative video
The Reading's ex-Shamokin Division runs right through my home town of Tamaqua, Pa. Lots of memories of long, heavy freights heading for the mountainous Catawissa Branch on their way to Newberry Junction or Rupert.
Leave it to government to screw everything up. Many of the scenes in this video are parts of the Reading still operated today by the Reading & Northern.

I visited the Reading railroad museum in Hamburg, PA. Very educational. Definitely worth stopping by if in the area.
