- Season 2, episode 18 is here. Dominic, Connor, Erica, and Mark have an awesome conversation with everyone's favorite dipshit from Chicago, Todd Stashwick - Captain Shaw from Star Trek Picard Season 3.
We discuss Stashwick's actual Chicago origins, his aspirations to pursue a career as an artist, how wanting to be Bill Murray lead him to comedy and the Second City. He talks about his stint with Star Trek: Enterprise - playing the first Romulan revealed in ST cannon. We discuss his love of Dungeons and Dragons and he gifts us with a copy of his DnD inspired book of cocktails Mystic Libations. Obviously, we discuss his fan-favorite character - hated-to-beloved Captain Shaw. Wash is looking great thanks to a new haircut. I'm guessing that the powers-that-be had no idea that Capt. Shaw would be the most well-received Trek character since Garak.
Absolute legend. So dynamically written. So well acted…he nailed it, man.
Facts. I loved his mixture of old time Captin mixed with modern day sarcastic flare
Episode one: Who's this prick?
Episode nine: If Shaw dies, we riot!
It's funny that at the start of the season, everyone looked at Shaw and was like "God, I hate this guy, I hope they kill him", but towards the end, when they finally did, everyone was like "WHY DID THEY KILL HIM?" That was certainly MY reaction.
I never hated him, but I get how folks opposed his initial stance. The second he shut down Picard I realized that he saw a personal crusade that would jeopardize his crew, but I also saw his EB trauma. All he knew at that first dinner was that a retired officer and his first mate wanted to joyride his ship into mortal danger for a personal crusade. He chose his crews safety in a heartbeat with a resounding NOPE! All the new information unfolded as it did, and his heart shone through because of that. Everything wound up being a galactic threat, but did anyone really understand that from the first sit-down? Shaw redeemed himself and won our hearts. But his redemption was not about saying no, his redemption was letting go of his PTSD-borne bigotry towards Ex-B’s. Admitting that he was foolish. But his initial pragmatism to protect his ship and everyone on it was an immediate nod of respect. It is a story worthy of the novelized canon, and I want more.
I never hated him. I openly welcomed another taskmaster Jellico-esque captain.
I actually liked him from the start. The stargazer crew in S2 treated Picard like this big shot but Shaw just didn't care about all that.
Absolutely loved Todd's performance in Picard. He absolutely nailed the "I don't like this guy. He's just being a douche" to "ahh, ok. NOW his behaviour and attitude makes so much more sense" to just straight up crying at his ending... and then again from the grave in the final episode. Very well written and amazingly performed 🤗
What grave in the final episode?

I love Todd. Terry not only gave us a great TNG reunion but introduced Trek fans to this great actor.
And Terry and Todd introduced many of us to 12 Monkeys.
Imagine Captain Shaw's return as Main Computer A.I. of USS Enterpise G.

Computer: "No."
If they can't find an excuse for resurrection or never died retcon then by all means this is the next thing that makes sense.

He's been told repeatedly probably hundreds of times and severely scolded in the comments section to stop interrupting the guests. Usually a question gets asked and they start saying something really interesting and then he cuts them off. It seems he's read them and is restraining himself now
As someone who interrupts when they get excited, I really feel for Dom. Admirable restraint 🖖🏻

Captain Liam Shaw has inherited the "O'Brien must-suffer" trope, they put him through so much if they ever bring him back they need to make it a thing
Actually Terry Matalas did that with Todd's character on 12 Monkeys (Deacon) too. Except with a lot more blood.
If Spock and Picard could come back, Shaw must come back.

Todd seems such a great, down to earth chap. Bravo on your performance, it was pretty epic. To become a loved Star Trek character in a short time is impressive.
Shaw was a brilliantly written and acted character. What a perfect arc!
Sisko, who also was in the Battle of Wolf 359 and also lost loved ones, stood up to Picard as well.
Yeah them meeting Picard after expriencing Locutus' onslaught of the whole fleet at Wolf359 making their PTSD kick in. I've met veterans who've survived terrible battles and these portayals barely scratch the surface of what PTSD can put you through. Avery Brooks portayed that part of his character well when Sisco was dealing with his memories of Woff 359. Tod Stashwick's roll as Captain Shaw was played really well also. Made you dislike them at first thinking "how dare you talk to the great capt Picard like that." Then you realize what they went through when Locutus was the face of the Borg at the time.

Wow, I am a DS9’r myself…Sisko really gave it to Picard in that episode. Army veteran here…it is difficult juggling the past and present. There is a lot of that happening here, and it came out on the side of redemption. Anyone who calls this bad writing is reading all the wrong books…

Todd was unpleasantly good in Picard. Just amazing. It was worth watching just for him.
I was sceptical about his nerd creds until he went deep on D&D 😂. Ok. He's legit.
Got to meet Todd in person at Gary Con a few weeks ago - he was running a game at a table right next to mine! He is as cool in-person as he is here. Maybe more so.

Todd's a phenomenal artist and matched Trek actors beat for beat, which I find are people with the highest level of collective intelligence on the planet. So glad he's part of the fam now and I really look forward to see what he's going to do next.
Such a cool episode. Tood did succeed to make us care for that "unlikeable" character. Awesome!
Thoroughly enjoyable conversation. As a fellow child of Chicagoland, when Todd was talking about mapping out his career and eliminating risks, he attributed it to his parents, but I was thinking, "That's because he's a Midwesterner. We're sensible people. Pragmatism in in our DNA."
Captain Shaw is beloved canon now, and I can tell that means a lot to him. Means a lot to us, bud. You gave us a different type of Captain, and it clicked with so many of us. Welcome aboard, chum!

Love this chat with Todd. Legendary talent, creative, driven, and an awesome gent. Every role he brings to life, including Captain Shaw, are incredible characters. Hero or villain, whatever he portrays, he gives it his all.

Mr. Stashwick is a very complex and intelligent actor.
The way Todd played Shaw, and acted towards Picard, Riker and Seven, it’s like the one player being on a party of rule breaking players-- hoping, but then eventually giving in to the fact that the DM(Vedic, the Borg) is tired of his party’s sheeit-- and targets the ship for the next series of turns… he like “y’all don’t get it, Vedic’s rolled for initiative non-stop and Picard still thinks we’re paying 3D chess!” 😂 from Shaw’s perspective, it’s like the entire 3rd season of Picard is like his character’s DnD adventure 😂

3 weeks ago I've just finished re-watching the whole of Enterprise over several months, during lunch when at home or diner.
And realised in the final season 4 episodes that Todd was in in it, and now here you all are together. Another Star Trek miracle.

Todd's Shaw was a standout character for an already excellent season - I think it's telling for his skills as an actor and love of the craft that so many are heartbroken that (at least as far as we can ascertain), it's all we'll see of Captain Shaw.

I wasn't aware of Todd's super nerd status until he was cast on Picard. We are the same age and I'm right there with him: 77 was the year that changed it all. Another terrific interview.
Ok seriously guys. Todd is a seriously authentic D&D player. Much respect. You guys really need to understand how many people that attend TREK conventions are also D&D fans. Notice his reference to Lake Geneva and Gencon (convention locations for D&D back in the day). These two worlds MUST collide! Please look into getting Dom, Connor, Erica and Mark into a D&D game for Patreon members only. Maybe get Todd back to DM it!
It's nice to see Todd for who he is and to hear what his interests are. Connor, you're teaching me how to relax and be mellow (and being musically aware yourself, if you ever want to chat about classical music I have three music degrees and will share with you whatever you might like to know). Dominic, keep mending, buddy, and how GREAT it is that you studied with Michael Tolkien! Erica, you are so patient, lovely, and gracious. Mark, I always enjoy the comments you contribute.

Well I'm sure i share this thought with many people, but i can safely say Star Trek: Picard S3 is the best Trek we've had in a long time. For me, the best since S3 of Enterprise! And this is in no small way thanks to Todd's performance as Shaw. Impeccable sci-fi drama!!!

Captain Shaw was my favorite character in Picard S3. I enjoyed that he wasn't a sycophant.
It's a shame they killed off Captain Shaw, but I'm sure they'll bring him back with the movie Yesterday's Titan, and later with his half Romulan son.

Hi Dom, Connor, Mark & Erica - another solid show with a great guest.
It took me time to warm to his character in Picard but the Wolf-359 speech in the holodeck gave a lot of grounding to his traits, enjoyed his combative Seven dialogues ... loved his casual 'Frakes' throw offs in the chat.
I believed Todd when he said he was a geek, but when he casually mentions Yar's Revenge, it was bonifide.
10/10 deserted island selections. I'm warm, full, reading fellowship, and listening to the beatles.
Just to clarify a few things regarding the Dr Who part of the conversation. Yes, Peter Davison is David Tennant's father in law, with his daughter, Georgia Moffet meeting Tennant while playing the Doctor's daughter in the episode, The Doctor's Daughter. They got married a while later, have had a few kids, and iterestingly, Moffet even went to school with one of the daughters of Colin Baker, the 6th Doctor. She admitted that, when she was younger, she just thought everyone's dad played the Doctor at some point. :D

"Cool" is the only word that I can use to describe Todd, absolutely fantastic. In Voyager they had the holographic doctor, so why not in Star Trek: Legacy a holographic engineer? Shaw to come back as part cybernetic, as it's the only way to heal the injuries sustained in the battle and, just for irony, some of the implants will have been developed from captured Borg technology.

Interestingly, both Shaw and Sisko are survivors of Wolf 359. So it would have been cool to have both Captains interact on screen. What would/did Captain Shaw think of the Sisko?

Ro can come back by saying the Changelings beamed her off the shuttle before it blew up, and she was being held hostage. For Shaw maybe he can come back as a changeling that took his identity
A great way to bring Shaw back would be as the EEH - Emergency Engineering Hologram. Todd could totally pull it off and it keeps the emotional impact of his original characters death.
Calgary Expo is always a good time. Saw Connor at one of the Vul-Cons a few years back.

Technically nobody ever said he’s dead, so they could always pull a “he’s been in a coma for the last six months” if they wanted to bring him back
@@shadow_force imo more likely they needed real stakes on the line and emotional punch and everyone else had stronger plot armour. They sure delivered on the emotional punch too

I think, to make the trivia rounds actually fair, the buzzer needs to go. I think that since Mark (like myself) is a walking 'Memory Alpha,' Connor and Dominic should get to try and answer first. If they don't get it within the time limit or answer incorrectly, THEN Mark will get a chance to answer. Just sayin'... 🤷♂
Haha. Yes, we have actually tried this. Q1 to Dom, Q2 to guest, Q3 to Connor, Q4 to Mark. It kinda worked well.
Would love to see a Todd DM'd game of D&D with everyone here. I think Dom and Connor would get a kick out of it b/c they could really tap into their (stage) acting roots and Mark, My Liege Lord of Nerdom (whom I don't know has played it or not) and Erica might find it eye opening, too, if she's never played. I think it'd be a blast.
