Ganondorf in Wind Waker showed a side of the villain that we had not seen before. That he is trapped within his own fate of never ending hatred and lust for power, in that brief talk with Link atop the tower he reveals that he had the capacity to seek a new horizon, something other than the ruin of the desert, but the underlying problem is that he sought it only for himself. He is in conflict with his own nature and that is ultimately he undoing through out the series. Power for one and one alone, hubris and greed cutting him short every time.
Wind Waker Ganondorf is easily my favorite incarnation. I wish more Zelda games delved more into his head. He's a man bound to a curse I'd be neat if Nintendo wrote a Ganondorf trying to defy his fate. I guess I'm asking for too much
Some people tend to interpret Ganondorf's "coveted the wind of Hyrule" speech in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker as him wanting a prosperous land for his people, though I've seen at least one person on Twitter give a break-down of how his speech is more Ganondorf trying to internally justify to himself that he's not nearly as bad as everyone seems to think he is. Regardless of how you interpret it, though, what makes this a stand-out moment for Ganondorf is that it gives him more dimension than simply being an evil overlord, and that's what makes it memorable.
@Rubberman202. I can see a valid reason for Ganonorf trying to justify that he isn't as bad as he's made out to be. As he talks to Link and looks out over Hyrule, submerged under water, he may as well be saying in his head "This happened because of me..." his speech denotes a certain amount of guilt but his pride and evil nature ultimately spins it back around that he's not really to blame. His speech shows a bit of inner conflict too. That centuries living in the flooded world, whether above or below the seas time has granted Ganondorf a conscience and he is at odds with himself to a degree on the reality of world around him. Although the most telling look into his psyche is when the Triforce is before him , but the King of Hyrule wishes upon it before he does, and the king wishes for the rest of Hyrule to be destroyed. Ganondorf basically falls into madness at that point especially crying foul at the thought there would be a future for Link, Zelda and the rest of the world even with Hyrule completely destroyed. Ganondorf, despite his lamentations and guilt showed, in the end he only wanted Hyrule for himself and that was his undoing.
Wind Waker Ganon was so unique for me. I played it for the first time this past year and found his attitude so different than what I feel Ganon usually has. It was a great iteration. Fantastic video. Cannot wait to see what you all create.
When I first played Wind Waker years ago in 2003, it felt strange to see Ganondorf reflecting on his actions. In Ocarina of Time when he was centuries younger he was very impulsive, set on reaching his goal and mowing down anyone in his way. I guess nostalgia of being back in Hyrule after a long time caused him to look back at what made him want to dominate Hyrule so badly.
Looking forward to more content like this. I hadn't even considered a lot of this whilst playing Wind Waker, so it's nice to have a fresh perspective. Keep it up. Good vibes!
Great first entry, I cant express how excited I am to see an analysis on Windwaker’s Ganondorf, he’s such an interesting villain. Keep up the good vibes!
Very good video, Derrick. Personally speaking, I'm really into this type of content myself, so if more of this is to come, you've got a viewer in me at the very least. Looking forward to what other types of content you guys intend on bringing to the channel here.

To me, this is taking the best of gamexplain and curated in an open way that seems really exciting, if this first video is any indication I think there’s a lot of awesome content to come!
such a good video. i really hope that they give his character more love. I like that you pointed out how the calamity is more a force of nature than an entity, which is actually pretty awesome, but i can’t wait to move past the mindless beast trope.
This reincarnation thing Ganon, Zelda and Link have going on is so fascinating and i'd love to see Nintendo do more with that specifically. Having the experiences and memories of their past lives could alter how Zelda and Ganon fight eachother or if they end up fighting at all. But I guess the Twilight Princess manga has a little bit of that going on, the memories thing at least.
I had the same reaction as a lot of people - I was very confused at first. I was like “Wait, I don’t remember subscribing to this channel?!” I literally unsubscribed because I was so confused. But as soon as I heard Derrick’s voice I subscribed back. Then I saw Jon’s update video and it all made sense :)
Such a great video. It also reminded me of a detail that I forgot about Wind Waker, the game that made me a Zelda fan. Until Breath of the Wild came out, WW HD was my favorite Zelda game.
Its weird to think that Ganondorf has only been in three Zelda games. Ocarina or Time, The Windwaker and Twilight Princess. Like obviously he has been in spin offs like Smash Bros and Ganon has been in others but as iconic as he seems, he hasn't appeared since 2006.
Greetings from Blue Muppet Man's Twitter feed! The Iwata Asks bit was fascinating, I never would have guessed Journey To The West had any impact on The Legend of Zelda.
Amazing content as always Derrick, I've been missing your voice and written thoughts for a long time (BTW Andre banned me in GameXplain for saying you were a better reviewer). Also congrats for your child. Jon is a great man for giving you guys a channel with an established audience. I hope he makes guest appearances from time to time.
this is in part why im very excited to see how they do ganon in botw2. him being a good guy that was slain, and covered up by the royal family would be an amazing deviation from the norm, and truly show that nobody is born evil, that the curse is its own being, not just ganon
"What did the King of Hyrule say?... That the gods sealed Hyrule away? And they left behind people who would one day awaken Hyrule? How ridiculous... So many pathetic creatures, scattered across a handful of islands, drifting on this sea like fallen leaves on a forgotten pool... What they can possibly hope to achieve? Don't you see? All of you... Your gods destroyed you!" -Ganondorf, 400 AT (Adult Timeline)
i like to think by the time of the wind waker ganondorf has seemed to break free of demises curse he has regained his humanity it makes him more tragic
I am very excited to see what other villains could be tackled in the future with this light? Egil and Amalthus from Xenoblade Twist antagonists from Persona 4 and 5 Sephiroth from FFVII of course I am excited to what the possibilities bring!
This video left me a bit torn. While the voiceover and transcript were great there was a copule things I'd improve upon. First would be to let the video "breathe" meaning to take pauses between "chapters", silence isn't dangerous. Too much of talking with no pauses is kind of exshausting. Second would be to put music where it fits. In this video the music didn't seem to fit to the theme and distracted me from the context. But in the end, the video was great in it's own right and I am excited to see more!
I'm always willing to take criticism and will absolutely keep that in mind for future features. For as long as I've done this, it's still something new to me just because GX hardly did video like these. I'm looking forward to improving! ~Derrick

I think Ganon could be expanded upon as a character. But I wouldn't call him one of Nintendo's most shallow villians when I look at his backstory and motives. But I found that Ganondorf in that game clearly wanted revenge on those that caused his trial in the first place. Or at least close enough...as Ganondorf was able to battle the descendant of the one who caused it.
Wind Waker is the only game that almost makes me pity Ganondorf because of those final scenes. Here, he's the classic example of a person whose actions can certainly never be excused, but whose actions can at least be explained.
