  • On this adventure me and a couple of my friends Kara, Marla and Jason summit Mount Thielson to the Spire. This is a super technical climb lots of scree towards the top although the true summit is at the top of the spire we did not feel comfortable going up it without climbing gear. We did see some people do it without but it is super dangerous and I would not recommend it.

I summitted Mount Thielsen four times between 1988-92. The last 50 feet or so is vertical but wasn't too bad as there were plenty of hand- and foot-holds. Progress is made by actually moving horizontally back and forth and making slow, measured vertical gains-- keeping your center of gravity close to the spire. (None of us had any gear.) The tricky part is finding the correct way up. The route which appears the most promising is actually a dead end, and the fust climber up always had to back straight down. There are several spots on the peak where you can see where lightning has struck. Also, there was a capped pipe that contained messages from previous climbers. You could read them and leave your own, if you thought to being a pad and pen, of course. We only did that on the second, third, and fourth climbs. Lol.

We climbed back in the 80's, climbing the last bit to the top wasn't too bad, we climbed without rope but did a pull down rappel on the way down as it is tougher going down. Like Mt. Washington and Three Fingered Jack you have to watch out for loose rock. We didn't have video back in those days so thanks for sharing!

That is one serious hike! Good call on not attempting the spire. I had a friend fall and had to be air evacuated when he attempted it.👍

Thank you for sharing the video! How long did it take on the way up and on the way down? I made it to the summit back in 1987 and I don't remember it being that steep as I did not have any gear. There was a U.S. Geological Survey spike at the top and a book you signed. I definitely would not climb to the top based on your video, that's for sure! Thanks again for the video!

Perry Burger we started about 6:30 am and got back to the car about 2 pm I believe. We took a few breaks and of course more time since I was filming. Once you leave the PCT that when you really start climbing about half way up you will encounter some scree fields. Where you saw me at the top was just below the spire you have a relatively safe area there to look around. The spire is pretty much straight up and is super dangerous we saw a husband and wife go up but she turned around because she almost fell he continued but it looked way to dangerous to risk it without gear.

Yes it was! I think we both had our skill levels pushed for sure. Can you believe this was the last time we hiked together 😢 too long in my opinion 😁
