- NATO SUMMIT: 40 billion for Ukraine! But "money alone does not make you happy" Arms deliveries?
At NATO's anniversary summit in Washington, the member states reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. US President Joe Biden announced that an additional Patriot air defense system would be delivered to Ukraine, with a total of five systems being provided. This pledge was made together with contributions from Germany, Romania, the Netherlands and Italy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky had originally requested seven systems.
At NATO's 75th anniversary celebrations, Biden emphasized that the support for Ukraine is strong and steadfast. Germany has already delivered one of the promised systems, meaning that Kiev has received three Patriot batteries from the German government since the start of the war. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned the member states not to let up in their commitment to Ukraine and emphasized that a Russian victory in Ukraine would entail considerable costs and risks.
The NATO states are discussing further military aid amounting to 40 billion euros. However, there are no plans to invite Ukraine to join. In addition to the main summit, meetings with partner countries such as Moldova and Georgia as well as a dinner for the heads of state and government were on the agenda. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Selensky for bilateral talks.
Ukraine is planning to counter its shortage of soldiers on the front line with a "Ukrainian Legion" made up of Ukrainians living in other European countries and stationed in Poland. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov called on all Ukrainians in Europe to join the legion.
Russia continued its attacks on targets in Ukraine. Three people were killed in the south of the country. Two people died in Odessa and another in the city of Nikopol. Russia has been regularly attacking at night since the beginning of the war. In massive attacks on Monday, a children's hospital in Kiev was also hit, killing 43 people and injuring around 200. These attacks were strongly condemned internationally and Ukraine observed a day of mourning on Tuesday.
