1976, two years after Jean-Paul Guerlain released Eau de Guerlain, another Eau sees the light of day: the far less known Eau de Campagne by Jean-Claude Ellena for Sisley. Both of them tackle the timeless eau de cologne theme while undeniably drawing inspiration from Roudnitska's Eau Sauvage. And while I enjoy both, they are, blessedly different from each other. Eau de Guerlain is lush and multicoloured as Claude Monet's Garden at Giverny while, somewhat predictably, Ellena's Eau de Campagne is more monochrome, with a high dynamic range and a play on light and shadow. Bright green galbanum sets the stage, with subtle jasmine and white musk while the pallette dives into vetiver and oakmoss's dark delight. Gentle basil adds its sweetness and Eau de Campagne's poem of contrasts is complete.
Great review! I will always have a bottle EdC in my collection. It is a supremely invigorating fragrance while still being marvellously, magically, interesting-a ‘freshie’ for intellectuals. 😉 The soap/shower gel is also wonderful.
