This is a protest song about the Vietnam war! Ian Gillan was a brilliantly trained singer and even Pavarotti was a fan! Deep Purple are one of the most slept on bands of the 70’s !
The COLD WAR.....Gillan is quoted as saying that the song was created "using the Cold War as the theme", adding "the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat looming over us at what was probably the height of the Cold War."
Problem is crap corporate radio and media have ignored Deep Purple apart from Smoke on the Water. One would think Purple were simply one-hit wonders. There is a treasure trove to be mined in the Purple catalogue.
This is why people of my generation (I’m 63) pay absolutely ZERO attention to the modern music scene. We grew up with this. I’ll add a single caveat to that statement. A Japanese metal band called Lovebites have restored my faith in talent based music. Their (half of twin) lead guitarist is a classically trained pianist. The band plays “heavy metal” (their description) in its purest form. Miyako (pianist guitarist) has recently released an EP of piano covers. All metal. The last track is “Burn” which is another DP song you MUST react to. I really enjoyed this reaction. Very nicely done.
I've seen a load of people in Hyde Park (London) including the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, T.Rex, Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, etc., etc., Those really were the days to be living in.
I started listening to Deep Purple when i was 14 .Now i am 63 and stil listening to their music . And i am glad that i saw them 2 times Live (Greetings from Belgium)
My older brothers 'forced' me in to Purple, Sabbath, Floyd, Zappa etc. since I was seven. I'm now about 45 and eternally greatful for my brothers. Greetings from Finland.
Lying on the floor of the Cardiff 'top rank' concert venue...stoned...drunk...waiting for Cardiff band 'Budgie' circa 1982..the first time I heard this. It took me somewhere magical, weird, and exciting. I never went back.
The crowd just sitting there quiet reminds me of Michael j.fox back to the Future when he does Johnny be Good and he says you don't get it but your kids will
Ian Gillans vocal range was C2 to D6 (4 octaves - 2 semitones) I would recommend you listen to the live album "made in Japan" to see what DP was all about....
Also, so many people only know Purple for Smoke on the Water, but, growing up with this music, Smoke on the Water never registered with me as one of their best songs. There are so many Purple songs that are far, far better in my view.
Don't know his name but that drummer is just so fucking cool haha. Every one of these guys is seriously talented, it doesn't take long to see that and this song, a child of time, a child of war. Concern, heartbreaking crying and chaos. Got to be one of the weirdest war songs I've ever heard but my Lord is it effective. Great reaction my friend.
It's called an Epiphany. Lol Literally a life changing experience. I've been hearing this song since the 70s and it never grows old. Thanks for the reaction. Like a kid in a candy store, eh? Great reaction. Thanks!
You're right dude, I was a teenager during the '70's and the radio only played these songs when they were requested because they didn't fit the 3 minute time slot like all the pop songs at the time so i didn't really listen to the radio a lot since I was too busy buying all of these amazing albums that included Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Black sabbath, Uriah Heep, Alice cooper and Pink Floyd then later on Steely Dan, Return to Forever, Al Di Meola, Jean Luc-Ponty. The radio was playing a lot of The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Elton John and other commercial acts. We were spoiled for choice, it was a great time.
Yes was always my favorite, but I’m a prog rock geek. But all of those you mentioned are high on my list too. It was so great growing up in the 60’s and 70’s….
In the seventies rock radio was different. Rock radio was called AOR (album oriented radio). Rock stations would receive an album and would play the songs they wanted or were requested by their listeners. Deep Purples original members reunited in the 80s and put out the album Perfect Strangers. Check out the title track and Knocking At Your Back Door from it. 🤘
People always comment how subdued the audience was here. But my understanding was they were told to sit still and be quiet because the performance was being recorded. Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, all musicians supreme so ahead of the rest it was painful. I miss Jon Lord to this day. Don't get me wrong Zeppelin and Sabbath were legendary bands but for me Purple particularly Mark 2 left them all in the shade. So glad you checked out something beyond Smoke on the water.
I couldn't agree with you more and I saw all three of the Trinity but none blew me away like Deep Purple and Ian Gillan's voice the entire band are the ultimate musicians of all time and I saw many other bands but none takes the place of Deep Purple.
You are right, the audience must wait until the end to applouse. I know it because the father of a school friend was one of the camera man at this shoot and he told us the story behind the scene.
I also got to see that very same band in 85. Perfect Strangers tour. Ian Gillian still had the chops man! It was my first concert ever! I was spoiled after that.
As a child of the 70’s, we had the most outstanding music of all time…no auto tune, just straight out amazing musicianship. Each of the bands of this era built their success on originality. Not sameness, but true Rock and Roll creativity. Thank you for recognizing this. My 70’s of listening to this music was truly amazing
There has alway been good and bad music. Today there are tons of really great metal bands, and for sure none of them uses autotune, while back in the 70s we had bands like "Boney M" where the main singer wasn't even singing at all, so thats even worse than autotune. Also some use it just as a stylistic effect, just like a guitarist is maybe using a wah-wah pedal. Think about Cher, she can of course sing and didn't needed it when she made "Believe", it was just for the style. And even back in the 70s most people just knew shit like the whole "disco music", and if you asked them about Yes, Genesis, Renaissance .. they just shaked their had. The only big difference is maybe that, if you are american and still listen to the radio and what the industry feeds you, then you have maybe no clue what good music is out there because the only give you "DJ MadDog MC" or whatever idiotic names these guys have 😄 Btw.: the most really great bands from the 70s where also from europe, only that they mostly came from the UK at that time, while now its maybe more from northern europe.
Some of you have to react to this band with tape ... us old folk got to see them live! Add in Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Queen ... all in their heyday! Yep we were blessed.
This is such an iconic song and live, every instrument on that stage shines and played to perfection, it’s an instrumental and vocal masterpiece. And then Ian’s voice is so angelic at times and then does stuff that shouldn’t be possible. And the transitions during this song just keep coming. Epic performance.
From Australia , great reaction to the legendary DEEP PURPLE , the best British classic rock band of the late 60s early 70s no question about it , to see them live at that time was unbelievable , all individual virtuoso musicians of there instruments , Peace from down under.
Music of the Gods, I was listening to this since I was a kid thanks to my amazing Dad. I saw them live 3 times (not in the 70s lol, not quite that old) and was so grateful to see them with John Lord before he died. Bloody awesome band!
yep. That was pretty much my reaction when I first heard this song and saw this video only about 3 years ago. Mind. Blown. Have watched it 100s of times since then; never get bored of it, nor of seeing the reaction of other people seeing/hearing it for the first time. Great reaction!
We ve been rockin with this all of our life's and also with Burn, Highway star, Storm bringer, Fireball, Strange kind of woman, Hush, You keep on moving and many many many more of Deep Purples catalogue. And also Smoke on the Water... Why not? One of the greatest ever.
Welcome to the true DP. Pioneers of heavy metal and all around great guys. I have been honored to be their friend for the past 35 years and they love to keep recording and touring!!!
@@gingerbaker_toad696 I recognize your screen name (and I highly approve!), but I'm wondering if you recognize my avatar? PS - will you hate me though if I tell you that Ian Paice is my most favorite drummer of all time? I am just such a huge Deep Purple fan, and Paice is embedded in my heart. I just feel that since we are friends now, I should be honest with you. LOL 🤘☺️
It's funny how time (sometimes) changes your perception of these things. When I was in sixth form at school, there was a fight every break for who got to put their mix tape on the stereo system. Sometimes, I'd win with (early) Queen or Horslips, and other times it would be Made in Japan by Deep Purple. At the time, whenever this track came on, I just heard it as 'screaming'. But you get wiser as you get older, and I recognise now what my school mates did way before me - that it is a masterpiece. I saw Deep Purple a few months ago (with Gillan). I've seen them several times. He can't hit anything like this range now, but he is - and certainly was - a brilliant vocalist. It's important that younger generations get to hear it, because there's absolutely nothing at this level today. One by one, all the legends are leaving us.
Definately When a blind man cries and Hush added to that list, Dan gonna love these must listen too tracks, he been living under that rock for far toooo long.
Great band and song. In 1970 i was 11 years old and Deep Purple was already one of my favourite bands. You really need to react to FOCUS with the "song" Hocus Pocus from The Midnight Special 1973. You will be surprised in a good way i promise you
And then the late 70s, disco was dying, the 80s came and we got a bunch of 'radio be-bop' , just push a button and there's music. Yes , this is real ! This is Rock n Roll !
They have so many great songs, Highway Star, Lazy, Strange kind of woman, Perfect strangers, Knockin' at your backdoor. I'm 45 and grew up on this music including the many classic greats like Jethro Tull, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and grew into Nightwish, Ayreon, Epica, Jinjer, Unleash The Archers, and Arch Enemy. It's crazy how much the music changes and talent grows through the years.
Huge Nightwish fan here, but I am first and foremost a Deep Purple fan! 💜 My Deep Purple story It was the summer of 1989 and I was 13. My friends were all into the big 80s pop, hair metal, etc., so I was into that scene, too. I didn't know I had a choice. I didn't know what else existed, to be honest. One day, my ex-stepfather (who was only very briefly in my life) was doing something in the garage, jamming to some music. Bored, I wandered in and asked what band he was listening to. He was incredulous that I was unfamiliar with the song that was playing. So, he sat me down on the concrete garage floor (felt cool on a hot day), put gigantic headphones over my ears and fired up his 8-track player. From the opening second of Deep Purple's _Burn,_ I was hooked. Out poured the most powerful, transformative sounds I'd ever heard. The experience literally transfixed me. I had never heard anything like it, and it was magical. I ended up listening to the entire 8-track in one session, without ever getting up from that concrete floor. Through every lineup and stylistic change, I've been happily hooked on Deep Purple ever since. 💜
Yes this is a MASTERPIECE. Love your reaction😍 Ian is the man, such a magnificent voice ( like Robert Plant). I grew up with this. Blessed to be a child of the 70s. Smoking a .... and chill out with friends and listening to Child in Time was am unforgettible experience. I have seen DP live and got totally emotional seeing them play. Awestruck.
Better late than never. Been a deep purple fan from the beginning. Managed to hang on to a few LPS and one 8 track. And on this side of the pond we had Iron Butterfly. Another Hidden Gem Iron Butterfly hit it big with the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 17 minutes of wow Epic drum solo. And Butterfly Bleu. For most it was their introduction to the talk box. There's a video of them performing butterfly Bleu on live television commercial free for over 20 minutes. Don't say you were told ✌️🤠🏞️🐂
This is the kind of reaction the song deserves. Luckily you have the live in Denmark 1972 videos to go through (Highway Star, Lazy, Strange Kinda Woman), and the California Jam 1974 stuff with David Coverdale and GFlenn Hughes singing (Burn, Mistreated). And trhen there's all the off shoots - Rainbow, Whitesnake, Gillan. Enjoy.
Daniel you are a star, I am loving this channel, this is one of them most amazing songs off all time and what a lineup they had. This is the song that convinced Tim Rice that Gillan was the one for Jesus Christ Superstar. I think you need to do Jethro Tulls Thick as a Brick next, parts 1 and 2.
It's about time for some deep purple keep on rocking i did mention this awesome tune now a bit of when a blind man cries live in Verona with an orchestra great reaction pal 🇬🇧 no autotune just pure talent
Bless you Daniel 💜 we were raised on this, got totally involved there! Just relax & go with the flow....& breathe! Welcome aboard cariad. Love & light 💜🏴🌻
Life long Deep Purple fan (and now Nightwish!!! ;) ). I'm 62 and grew up with this band. "In Rock" (the album this song is from) was the first album I ever bought. My personal favorite Deep Purple song is "Lazy." I'm obviously biased, but I think we grew up with the best music of all time in the late 60's through the 70's with the bands who were the titans of rock
@@ricardoluistomasone4663 LOL... Wore out my deep purple in rock vinyl in about 1978, I was late to the party being only 11 at the time. Now a die hard Nightwish fan... I am the only person I know in real life that's even heard of Nightwish. I now feel less alone! Rock til you die Bro!
IMHO Deep Purple is the most musically gifted among the Unholy trio, which includes Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Beyond Smoke on the Water, there are so many great tunes from this killer band that aren't played on the radio enough!
Seen them in concert back when I was a teenager, saw many of the greats back then when you had to be able to play instruments and sing to be able to get up in front of a crowd, God bless
Парень, твоя реакция на одну из великих песен начала 70-ых очень многого стоит!! От себя лично: послушай другую их не менее эпичную песню "FOOLS" с альбома "Fireball" 1971 года! / Guy, your reaction to one of the great songs of the early 70s is worth a lot!! Personally: listen to their other equally epic song "FOOLS" from the 1971 album "Fireball"!

This is real handmade music. I‘m happy to could grow up with this. Today i turn the radio off, there is nothing which can compare with this.

Everybody is blown away when they hear this track for the first time.
I'm still blown away every time I hear it.
No technology just pure talent
Great great great reaction! I really enjoyed it! Cheers from Australia 👍👏
Deep Purple is so much more than smoke on the water , Deep Purple rips !! Wait till you hear speed king , or Fireball !!
or 25 others, at least (live Strange Kind of Woman.....wow!)
Your reaction says it all! No auto-tune, no remixing, just straight up pure music! Not bad for a fifty-three year song!
Amazing band, such gifted musicians and Ian Gillan is one of my all time favourite singers - he has some very serious pipes 🤘
Once upon a time in the 80's I saw him singing live, during his stint with Black sabbath whilst Ozzie was in the naughty corner.

Maybe modern music mainstream but even then you have to look beyond what is immediately offered to you there is so much great music being made
I was lucky enough to see DP live twice. They were in the Guiness book of records for the loudest band back then.

Grande gênio yo me enganché con purple allá por los 70 love DEEP PURPLE
Yes this is a MASTERPIECE. Love your reaction😍 Ian is the man, such a magnificent voice ( like Robert Plant). I grew up with this.
Blessed to be a child of the 70s. Smoking a .... and chill out with friends and listening to Child in Time was am unforgettible experience. I have seen DP live and got totally emotional seeing them play. Awestruck.
Remember sitting with friends, burning a couple and listening to complete albums?
Good times…
Boomers were the luckiest generation for music !❤
Better late than never.
Been a deep purple fan from the beginning.
Managed to hang on to a few LPS and one 8 track.
And on this side of the pond we had Iron Butterfly.
Another Hidden Gem
Iron Butterfly hit it big with the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
17 minutes of wow
Epic drum solo.
And Butterfly Bleu.
For most it was their introduction to the talk box.
There's a video of them performing butterfly Bleu on live television commercial free for over 20 minutes.
Don't say you were told
✌️🤠🏞️🐂
Glad your discovering what us "old" guys knew for over 50 years..............
This is music everybody should know. Thank you for your reaction.
I will definitely be listening to more Deep Purple.
Best Band of all time Deep Purple #1
Bless you Daniel 💜 we were raised on this, got totally involved there! Just relax & go with the flow....& breathe! Welcome aboard cariad. Love & light 💜🏴🌻
Life long Deep Purple fan (and now Nightwish!!! ;) ). I'm 62 and grew up with this band. "In Rock" (the album this song is from) was the first album I ever bought. My personal favorite Deep Purple song is "Lazy." I'm obviously biased, but I think we grew up with the best music of all time in the late 60's through the 70's with the bands who were the titans of rock
SIN DUDAS ESTO ES EL SANTO GRAAL DEL ROCK!!!
@@gebbethgamer6427 I am 72 now and I never tire of listening to this or any other Deep Purple songs and seeing them live is even more mind blowing
Such a great song with such great lyrics.
I listened to Deep Purple a lot when I was young. I could still listen to it anytime.
I concur.
Me too , , yo también tengo 65 years !!!!!!
This is an iconic song for veterans of the Vietnam War.
I've been diggin' you for couple of years on ETS21 good to dig you here too.
Cheers m8!
Cheers! Much love!
Great tune & reaction ...Mandrake Root live is a banger too
You don't even need a video. The audio alone will blow you away.
IMHO Deep Purple is the most musically gifted among the Unholy trio, which includes Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Beyond Smoke on the Water, there are so many great tunes from this killer band that aren't played on the radio enough!
Yeah, these Smoke on the Water people have some great tunes. Highway Star would be a good continue. Peace
Love your reactioions.......... I got to see these guys LIVE.. and many others
I Was a pre teen back then but loved even then the music taalantvout there for tou and your GENARATION to still be listing to this it warms my heart to know it's still appreciated and loved listened to some 5 decades on
I’m so glad I grew up in the late 60’s and 70’s…..
Check out ‘when a blind man cries’.
Nothing but absolute raw talent on that stage!!! Legendary performance 🤘🤘
