A degree teaches you to use your brain, it doesn't train you for a job like an apprenticeship does.
Many professionals require apprenticeship afterwards .
But do Tory ministers understand this????😂

"Non of the journalists have media degrees." Maybe, just maybe if they did have media degrees our press wouldn't be so useless. I have a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in mentoring and coaching, both earned since turning 50.

Why the heck would video games development be considered as a mickey mouse degree? It’s a very lucrative career from what I gather. Isn’t the UK one of the country’s with the best video games industries? It generates a lot of money and jobs for this country.

Its such a specialised field and very difficult to find a job in the sector. I didnt go to uni , my friends did and im the only one out of my friendship group who is earning good money.

@@jackhewitt600it's very difficult to get most well paid and technical jobs. That is not an argument against education so much as for it.
I went to university and earn more than my friends who didn't go to university. Our anecdotal evidence has cancelled each other out. Oh dear, where do we go from here?

    • @jackhewitt600

Glad you are doing well. I joined the Army from school and afterwards became an Oncall FireFighter to go with my locksmithing business. Im now 50, mortgage free ,with a nice car and can work my own hours. My friends who went to Uni havent kicked on or found work in the sector they studied for and are now left with debts they will never be able pay off. Maybe it was a case of wrong place wrong time.

@@jackhewitt600 I am in your age group. All of my friends who went to Uni have no university debts left - they paid them off years ago! I have some friends who did not go to Uni who are doing well and some friends who went to Uni doing well. I don’t think your argument holds up at all. There are some professions where university is absolutely necessary and some where it is not. I wish there were more apprentice jobs where people earn university degrees whilst they are on the job so they do not acquire any debt at all. In fact I wish the government came up with a way that the jobs that need to be filled for the betterment of society ie engineering, medicine, pharmaceutical/science etc were paid by the government or industry instead of lumbering so many young people with debt.

You don't need a degree to do video games development is the point being made. No one is arguing against degrees, but rather the emphasis that is being placed on degrees, thinking it's the only way out, as such people go out and get all sorts of degrees just so they can say they have one.

We all know why, universities have been changed into businesses hence the appearance of some subjects as degrees which could otherwise be learnt through training schemes or on the job.

The issue isn't the courses per se, it's the use of the word 'degree'. There is a huge difference between academic subjects and vocational ones; there's pros and cons of both for very different reasons, but the word 'degree' lumps everyone together into a good vs bad comparison.
I think what the policy is really about is providing apprenticeships to fill the skills gaps we are sorely missing at the moment in the UK; because we've been hooked on cheap overseas labour for years!

Is the university a former polytechnic = bad sign
Seeing universities at job fairs and needing to advertise = bad sign
Not allowing you to talk to the third year students = bad sign
Is there a demand for the job?

There is a need to a review of University courses, but freedom of choice is also a fundamental in a democracy. Thing is Latin useless, Video game design is a huge market and a huge earner for uk. Many do engineering and struggle while others do media and get jobs. The issue is the Old Polytechnic system had value but was scrapped as the people who ran them wanted University salaries.

Point is - take a degree that only top 1% can get into and obtain and you get a way better job, irrespective of subject, than if your degree is in the 10% easiest to get into and easiest to graduate from....
