5th time watching this interview. How can anyone dislike this? so much information alone in this interview and he seems like such a humble engineer and person its so refreshing in this industry.
This is great. Stuttering aside, I feel like the questions were a lot more relevant and insightful than they sometimes are. This is a treasure trove of knowledge from a great craftsman.
This is quite possibly the most interesting interview I've ever seen. Im gonna be spending all weekend in my studio now. 1 DRUM MIC ON REHAB!! Really? Unbelievable! I gotta try that. Please please please please please get him back for another interview if not another 3,4,5 interviews. Amazing!!
I don't care when Tom is coming to New York, and I don't care how soon it is, I found this guy fascinating, and I would really love to see him return in person!
I love that he bounces down to 20. I bounce down to 5 now, from like 20 tracks (makes me feel like a pro after watching this). So when I mix my own stuff it's simple. The synths, bass, kick, snare, percussion are all I need to mess with. The mix is nothing like Tom's but I'm learning.
I met Tom in CAPRI STUDIO many years ago, while I was main engineer there and he was visiting... Very nice person, but unfortunately we didn't spend much time together... I lost a great opportunity there 😛
It's been a long time since I used this info so correct me if I'm wrong someone. I believe the entire session needs to be at the same sample rate so that it sounds correct. I'm not sure since I have a old DAW if newer systems can handle multiple sample rates.
In the ITL, I'm just curious why Dave is using the PT EQ, when he has the best plugs and outboard gear, maybe he's just trying to relate to us and the gear we're using I guess, but he still makes it work, he's amazing! Love these episodes man, I have learned so much! ;-)
That RTA on his desk is sick, shame it's over 1.2k of i'd get one, just not a priority for now.. could have an iPad on RTA constantly and still have 1k change
Thanks again for sharing the knowledge! QUESTION: with a lot of the music we hear today containing performance LOOPs, how do you handle a song that uses drum loop (RMX,KONTAKT, EAST/WEST, FL STUDIO) as main instrument? Do you find a way to de-construct the drum loop or do you mix the loop as is?
two questions... when you send a track to an aux, you do it by send bus, or the output of the track? if it`s the send bus, you use pre or post? please do an ITL about it!! greets from brazil and thanks a lot for the great great job!!!
If your computer can handle it may as theoretically use higher resolutions incase plugins are affecting by a higher resolution...may not be able to hear it though. If (like me) your computer cant hand anything higher then 44.1 and 48k with 32 bit float then stick to that.
"converting a session from 48-96k so its the best possible quality when its printed?" surely you cant add stuff thats not there to start with? I suppose it is necessary to keep the sample rate consistent in your work flow but correct me if i'm wrong, it is not going to be "better quality" unless its recorded at 96k
Wow dude, you're really mad aren't you? I am a fan of Dave, I like what he does. And that comment wasn't completely serious. Anyone could figure that out. Now watch some anger management videos and come back in a year.
@36:20 For anyone else keeping record 😏

Damn, that was a great episode!
"If someone sends me 120 tracks on a multitrack, I can't deal with that amount of crap in my life."
Still here for everything I kept missing for the past decade.
This is great. Stuttering aside, I feel like the questions were a lot more relevant and insightful than they sometimes are. This is a treasure trove of knowledge from a great craftsman.
This is incredible. Thank you so much, Dave and everyone! Cheers!
We definitely need a part 2 with Tom! So much information to get to, like his work on Blackstar.
Guys, this one's immense. Have him on again!
We need him for a part 2
3rd time watching.... pure inspiration. Thank you Mr. Elmhirst!
Tom Elmhirst and Michael Brauer....a couple of the best interviews on Pensados Place in my opinion. Awesome show, guys!

Tom is great! Loved the show!

Another great show! Thanks Dave and Herb.
quite possibly the best episode so far! loved it.
just watched his mix with the masters mix and had to revisit this, genius
Thanks Dave & Tom
A fader as EQ. Sweet. I never thought of stuff like this.
Dave and gang, your stuff is the best! I get so much from these sessions.
"1 Mic on the drums." This is just great mixing work he did.
Honestly every time Herb talks I can feel he still have no clue...... but thanks for doing this...Tom is my Fav Mixer
This is the best show since the Eric Valentine ITL!!!! Thanks so much!!!
this was one of the best interviews I've seen because of content...I learned a lot...big props to Dave and Herb...
Really great episode. I'm learning so much from the episodes, from guests to Dave himself. Keep up the great work, guys.
Best Pensado's guest ever

I'm using a ton of spring reverb since I watched this interview, love you Tom 💖😂
Where are you getting your spring reverb from?
@@awesomematthews1238 avid space, the Orban and vintage spring
@@alexandre7634 oh okay. I think he is using analog springs as he mentioned he hates digital reverb
@@awesomematthews1238 take a look at his sound on sound breakdown of Adele's "rolling in the deep" and someone like you, he talk about reverbs
great show guys. I learn so much every time
im watching this one for the 3rd or 4th time
haha i'm on my 6th. so much knowledge
Dory Garcia
8th time for me... :D
Dominic Dot Okune same
2nd for me. Good stuff.

If you need 12 plug ins on a kick drum, you're doing something wrong.
Best mixer of all time
great show again!
Wow, really enjoyed that :) Thanks
great interview guys!!

still out here Max

Tom looks like a nice Bond villain
awesome insight
u r the man!
At the end of this yall promised to do a part two and further discuss Trevor Horn, it's been almost three years, any plans to continue this?

Good stuff
I haven't watched the interview yet, but he mixed the Skyfall song
There's some debate about whether plugins work better at higher resolutions, especially classic compressors.
awesome ITL!!

when's part two?!
GREAT ITL!
Yay!
If you're looking for an awesome mix engineer, chck out Raz Klinghoffer
His in LA though...
so fresh :D
3:38 - 11:30 Why is everything clipping in your session?
Is that a split or line console bewind him?
The frequency width has nothing to do with time, If I mix a bass out of a recording it won't get slower or faster,it will just have less bass.
We need a itl on workin with 2 track beats cause in hip hop we see this a lot mixin vox over that
Sneaky fart at 17:15?
34:02 Thats determination
It's more of a headroom thing.
i do comp it down after though to stems
try 233 for an orchestra piece!

gud
dave, use some shampoo.
im going to hell for saying that.
Maxim Lamoureux shampoo causes cancer and audible treble boosts. Lol
I'd like to yell at that guy with the crazy hair, "Just spit it out!" He keeps stuttering his questions.
That's the way he talks. lol
over compressed
+Rafael t. What did he do that made it over compressed?
Tom sounds like Liam Gallagher hahaha.
Pulse2AM you’re not from England are you 😂
