    To explain Airier, the Last Wall Protocol is a contingency protocol that Rogal Dorn put in place after accepting the Codex Astartes. It basically calls for all the Imperial Fists chapters to come together and reform the Imperial Fist Legion with it being used during the War of the Beast.

    In theory, the battle cant is far from “Stupid” as you put it. Using a forms of communication that only a member of a specific culture would understand is incredibly effective, and is really no different from using coded messages nowadays. I dare you to say that using codes is dumb.
    With the Navajo during WW2, culture and code were combined, as some ended up used as radio operators in the Pacific theater, where they sent messages in their native tongue. Being such a niche language, neither the Japanese nor the Hermans managed to crack the code, making this one of the most successful uses of coded messages in history

    Nemesor Zandrekh takes captives.
    Then again so does Trazyn the Infinite, though he regards them as pieces of a collection, as opposed to prisoners.
    He’s basically the Necron equivalent of Don Quixote in that he basically has robo-Alzheimer’s.
    He still thinks that he and his men are flesh and blood Necrontyr, and that his opponents are also opponents to be treated with civility and a certain respect.
    Ironically in comparison to other forms of insanity in 40k his actually makes him less vicious.
    Nonetheless in the lore he is still a brilliant tactician despite his “issues”.
    His right hand man Obyron facilitates Zandrekh’s even in his mental state.
    Obyron is fully aware of their mechanical state but has given up on trying to convince Zandrekh otherwise. Though he is extremely loyal to him nonetheless.
    He also ensure that in Zandrekh’s court of other Necron Lords there are no dissections, infighting, insurrective schemes or falsehoods.
    When Zandrekh takes captives Obyron inevitably takes them out back and kills them after some time in “accidents” or “escapes” provided they don’t actually escape or Zandrekh lets them go.
    The latter being how Kor’sarro Khan ‘escaped’ his captivity.
    On the tabletop I think there’s a rule where if Zandrekh is engaged in melee then Obyron can teleport to him and attack the particular unit.

    Necrons don't need to be fast. They have all the time in the world to horribly murder you. So much so that one of the deadliest tactics in the Necron playbook is for them to simply bury themselves and wait for the enemy to walk by, then claw their way out of the ground, preferably while the enemy is still on top of them. And they can wait for a very, very, VERY long time. Necrons don't need to eat, sleep, or keep themselves occupied, and will quite readily lay in wait for weeks, months, or years for someone to stumble by.

    @Airier: A *"Palatine"* (from Latin: _palatinus_ meaning "relating to the palace", plural _palatini)_ is a high-level official attached to imperial or royal courts in Europe since Roman times. The term _palatinus_ was first used in Ancient Rome for chamberlains of the Emperor due to their association with the Palatine Hill where the house of the Roman emperor was situated since Emperor Augustus. The imperial palace guard, after the rise of Constantine I, were also called the _Scholae Palatinae_ for the same reason. In the Early Middle Ages the title became attached to courts beyond the imperial one; one of the highest level of officials in the papal administration were called the _Judices palatini._ Later the Merovingian and Carolingian dynasties had counts palatine, as did the Holy Roman Empire. Related titles were used in Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, the German Empire, and the County of Burgundy, while England, Ireland, and parts of British North America referred to rulers of _counties palatine_ (an area ruled by a hereditary nobleman enjoying special authority and autonomy from the rest of a kingdom) as _palatines._
    Latin _palatinus_ was still an office in Merovingian times, today referred to as the _Count _Palatine._ The word became in French _palaisin,_ and with the Norman dynasty entered the English language as _palatine._ The word _paladin,_ referring to one of the legendary Twelve Peers of Charlemagne in the Matter of France, is also related.
    So "Palatine" wasn't the ruler's name so much as his title. And has nothing to do with Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.

    So there are a couple of cool things about Jaghatai Kahn and the White Scars that don't get brought up in this episode:
    1. Cheggorath, the Eldar Laughin God, actually switched Jaghatai Khan and Fulgrim's places. Originally, Fulgrim was supposed to land on Chogoris and Jaghatai Khan was supposed to land on Chemos.
    2. After the Emperor made Landfall, Jaghatai knew that theEmperor wouldn't never take "no" for an answer so he agreed to Join the Emperor, but only on several conditions. He made the Emperor agree to protect the environment and culture of Chogoris, thus preventing it from turning into a polluted wastelad.
    3. It took decades for Jaghatai to properly gather his legion. They had been deployed as Scouts to all corners of the galaxy. Unlike other primarchs who were able to get their legions up and running in a much shorter period of time.
    4. Upon receiving his Gloriana-Glass battleship (the massive battleship that all primarchs were given to use as their flagship, Jaghatai Khan went to the Mechanicum on mars and basically told them "No, no. This isn't going to work. This is a page-one rewrite." He made them rebuildhis ship almost from scratch to his exact specifications.
    5. Jaghatai Khan doesn't get fatigued. Ever. He has virtually infinite stamina and won't ever tire unless some outside force (such as Mortarion's weakening aura) is acting on him. While all Primarchs had superhuman stamina, Jaghatai's was exceptional even by those standards.

    The success of Jaghatai Khan (honoured be his name) has precedent in the history of Old Earth, actually. It was said that in the prehistory of our current calendar, when bows and arrows let one conquer empires from the Angkor Wat to the Ukraine, it was considered suicide to assault a walled city with nothing other than light cavalry. The Mon-Gol empire proved to be the exception to define the rule, and merrily did so. I think mankind invented the ballistic powder hand gun not too long after that point.

    • @Airier
      @Airier  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to communication between larger groups, it makes sense. But on a unit to unit basis, multiple ciphers would quickly become an issue if there was ever any form of integration needed between units that were not used to working with each other.
      the only way around that would be having one person in each unit who is versed in multiple ciphers. At least this way, if there is a barrier, they can probably find one cipher they can communicate in.
      But that's only assuming you working on an Astra militarum level. if we're talking some of the more crazy mental feats of a star tees, maybe? They could possibly be able to keep it all together? I really don't know for sure.

Your worry about communication with other units is a non-issue. Vox equipment in the Imperium has built-in encryption for military use, which is what they would use for communications between multiple units.

    • @Dragonspirit223
      @Dragonspirit223 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Airier Year old comment, but hey, I like thinking.
      A standard Infantry Squad is 10 members, one of which able to carry a vox-caster.
      Assuming we have, say, 300 squads on a planet (unlikely, more around hundreds to thousands to comply to units, battalions, brigades, ect.), and those squads run around together in units of, say, 10 Squads, those individual units would have their own code, and within those 10 Squads, a slightly different code could be spoken. Then the main leaders, possibly Captains, of those units would have their own code, while being fluent in the unit code and the inter-unit code. Then the ground forces could have their own code to communicate with air power, allowing them to signal specific messages, while not the most fluent of speech, it'd be possible. Each Unit could have one or two specific officers who'd speak that and their units code.
      If you're speaking multi-battalion, each home world could have their own code, they most likely already have a native language (Harakoni Warhawks speak Harakon, which could be used). If multiple detachments, aka. Planets, are used, then a few of the sergeants could have a basic code to use when intermingling occurs, or just use English when communication between squads, units, ect.
      As far as Space Marines are concerned, this is actually far simpler, as a Chapter only has about 1000 members, meaning that squads, which can be 5-10, could have their own code, leaders of said squads could have a code, and so on and so forth. As far as communication with 'brother chapters', they could reference the 'mother planet'. And the great thing about this is, these are Space Marines, I get the feeling they don't forget easily. Complications arrive between chapters and 'cousin chapters', or chapters from other first founding legions, but a basic Marine dialect could be established. There's most likely half a million Marines in total, I wouldn't know how many chapters there are, how many have more/less than the Codex Astartes allows, ect.
      Either way, doable, can be effective, the issue arrives when implamenting such a tactic, if you don't start it from the very beginning, and especially if your the size of The Imperium, implementation of new rules are... Difficult to say the least, and enforcement of said rules even more so.

    My only question which was never answered in this series:
    Does anyone even use High Gothic or is it just a fancy language that The Emperor came up with to spite the Eldar.

    • @Airier
      @Airier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't heard many people speak in it. But they use it a ton in every naming convention. Every time you hear something called "Adeptus," it's usually followed by another word in Latin. It's the same thing as high Gothic.
      Games Workshop wasn't being super creative in creating a brand new language, they are literally just using Latin (the surprising part is that, from what I've heard, they are using it correctly).

      The emperor does seem to love acting like he is the infallible Christian god and surrounding himself in Christian symbolism then going don’t worship
      Me like a fox and don’t do church things. And the the imperium dues exactly that.
      I really thing the emperor is in deep

    Precisely why that person was a threat to the White Scars. If you understood what the opponent was saying, you could counter their actions. The U.S. had a similar problem when facing Japan, so the U.S. used Navajo Code Talkers to use their native language through simple words (such as the Navajo word for hummingbird to refer to bomber planes) which did confuse the Japanese code breakers.

    Battle-cant is not a bad strategy. It is typically only used for squad level actions, so someone "breaking" it isn't really a huge concern for the larger picture, as larger picture stuff would have more advanced encryptions. Furthermore, something being vulnerable to being decoded does not preclude it from being useful, because it is better than using plain low gothic with no form of encryption.

It's for both enemy's that have eather bested the white scars in some way ( or denided them some objective, or just really really pissed them off) or have escaped before the white scars can murder them. Like the demon Prince mentioned in this pod cast. He ran away like a chicken every time the white scars got close to them. Some similar happeneds constantly with the famed tau commander shadow sun whom the white scars have the biggest murder boner for as she keeps sipping away due to games work shop not wanting the character to die as she is among the few popular tau characters that people seem to like. Battle cants (I think there's a specific term for this but I can't remember what it is) are incredibly useful for quickly relaying limited information.
    While its true that under ideal circumstances things like coordinates are better, you don't always have access to those. So for quick usage they provide enough security that unless your opponent happens to have an expert on that specific cant you'll usually have done what you needed to do before it can be taken advantage of even if your communications have been actively broken into and are being monitored.
    Similarly, by using pattern recognition based communication rather than numerical communication it becomes very intuitive. Listing off a set of coordinates requires at least a little thinking, if only because those change every time you do something. By making them inherently relative to your position you ensure that they can be more easily followed. Its the difference between saying "Turn west onto 40" and "Turn right onto 40".

    As any f armer could tell the Emperor, one piece of "grass" is _not_ like the other. Different soils and different types of grasses, herbs, clover and wildflowers make for better or worse food for grazing herbivores. That's why peasant farmers up to the 19th century planted specific mixtures of grasses and herbs in the fields meant to be harvested for hay for the cows, sheep and horses for the winter. Because these animals don't simply feed on plain "grass"... and technically in the wild these species do _not_ feed on grains (oats, wheat, maize), so modern feed for horses and high-protein feed for cows held in stables is something their digestive system's microbial fauna has first to be adapted to. That's why you're not supposed to feed your horses only oats.

    Your only example was literally "The north wind turns" and "The ram-hound strikes"
    Which for all you effing know means "We need more ammo" and "We are hungry"... Like seriously, it makes as much sense as most of the made-up military shit of the Space Marines Chapters but it's still better than just saying - "Enemies in front" as simply commmunication or having to remember shit like "Situation 42-87, orientation 64-Z9" as part of some stupidly complicated cyphered communication...
    White Scars (To my knowledge) recruit from Chogoris. So every White Scar is Chogorian. So every White Scar knows Chogorian references... There are no fricking Xenos, or Heretic spies on a fricking Founding Chapter Homeworld sending back messages about what the "North wind" MIGHT mean... So yes, it's a bloody fucking perfect and simple cypher...
