- The ability to become startled is an adaptive behavior that protects us from being injured by a sudden threat, and prepares us for the fight-or-flight response when necessary.
Nevertheless, getting startled too easily can be a sign that something is wrong.

I have noticed just what you were saying regarding histamine reaction, i.e. glycine not being the culprit/catalyst but rather the other compounds within gelatin and especially collagen supplements being the potential initiators.
Your videos are informative and always seem to lay out all the potential causes known and biochemical reactions that could be occurring. 🙏🏼

@@lenavoyles526 No, but Garden of Life makes a collagen with lactobacillus plantarium. It's supposed to help break down histamine and it's the only one I can do regularly without triggering hives.
And, I ran out, so I wasn't taking collagen and my jumpiness has gone off the charts. Yelled at my fiance last night for "sneaking" up on me and kissing my shoulder.
I knew he was in the room, just didn't realize he was that close or going to touch me. 😂🤦♀️
Hey Chris, off topic but did you know that the fingernail moons can be an indicator of folate status in the body? I used to be on the anti-biotic Bactrim for about a year and Bactrim interferes with folate synthesis in the body, and i noticed my fingernail moons basically disappeared while taking the anti-biotic, supplementing with folic acid brought my fingernail moons back. I didn't realize it at the time but i was folate deficient and anemic and such but supplementing with the folic acid really helped. Heck i was slacking on all my b vitamins so i started supplementing with em' all after that lol. But yeah the fingernail moons should technically i guess be near-about in the middle of each fingernail, but all mine where at the very bottom of the nail and my nails were purple, i asked the doctor what it meant and they didn't know, go figure lol, so i figured it out on my own.

did you take folic acid or folate? I know you wrote folic acid, just wanted to double check, since it is valuable information and people often use the terms folic acid and folate as the same.
@@adelaidaa2568 - I use Methylfolate or Folinic Acid although i prefer Methylfolate. But make sure you have enough B12 because Folate uses it up quite a good bit. Avoid Folic Acid.

I’ve tried anecdotally taurine and Niacinamide for severe exaggerated startle reflex which was made worse with caffeine (Glycine antagonist).
Neither of those worked or gelatine powder, so I tried Glycine itself with great success. It seems better with magnesium carbonate and creatine.
I think this was brought on by night shift work with terrible sleep patterns. Low sleep causes activation of conventional protein kinase C, which leads to desensitisation of GlyRs.
Please do more videos on this subject. This and learned helplessness in general.
This is very valuable information to me. But Im no PhD. It would be super helpful if you could slow down and dumb it down just a little bit. Instead of naming diagnostic names of effects of things like eggs, etc, just name the symptoms. Super helpful video very grateful for glycine knowledge, just can't keep up with you and intemperate all your technical language. I get the just but need to understand the details better. I find I startle horribly when my adrenals are fried from stress. Does stress burn through glycine. It’s like my nerves are rattling.

In the schizophrenia studies with glycine, from what I remember, they saw positive effects for negative symptoms, anhedonia, blunted affect, low motivation. To me this tells me it has some stimulatory effects. Especially in higher doses like they used. That's what I always got out of it. Some mild inhibitory effects but it always gives me a nice mood and motivation lift that is very noticeable. And when I read about it being used for sleep I'm not convinced it's totally inhibitory for everyone. I always read people saying they have more energy when they wake up when they take glycine. Maybe because of the stimulatory effects? Could be the NMDA stimulation as glycine is a co-agonist?

Hildegard, I would say it has more of a regulatory effect on the autonomic nervous system. It makes it easier to relax when relaxation is needed (e.g. time to fall asleep) AND easier to be alert when it’s time to be alert (e.g. waking in the morning). This makes me think that it may be supporting proper cortisol cycling and circadian rhythm. For me it feels almost like an adaptogenic effect, as though it is toning the autonomic nervous system. Would be interesting to see its effects on vagal tone studied. I hope that helps. (Great screen name, btw.)
I just started taking Glycine a few weeks ago for other reasons and just realized that I haven't been startled ever since. Something which used to happen to me every other day.
I also started supplementing with a vitamin B-complex which could play a part too.
How much glycine are you taking ..??.. It's encouraging to hear It's helped you.

I have had nighttime leg cramps for 7 years on and off since going low carb & carnivore. No amount of experiments with electrolytes would reliably fix it. But collagen supplements do! That's why they've been coming and going depending on whether I'm eating straight up beef or chicken/sausage/broth. Straight up beef reliably gives me cramps within 2-3 days. I just figured this out like last week and if anyone can explain it I'd be grateful. Possibly I have a mild EDS? I do have webbed toes and have been told my joints are loose.
I also had leg cramps since childhood and electrolytes did not help. I am carnivore and have long covid, which saps my energy. I started taking 3 healing spoonfuls of pure glycine a day and leg cramps are gone. I also have more energy and I sleep much better.

How common is it really that people notice some brain-effect from glycine or other food stuff?
I have been using glycine for a good while now for building collagen and glutathion. But have never noticed any neurological effect from it.
I have tried a couple of gram glycine 1 h before sleep, with no effect. Neither has melatonin, 3 or 6 mg, has any effect on my sleep.
It actually seems like my brain is isolated from the food stuff I eat!
I find that a very good way to be, and wonder if that isn't quite normal. To react so directly on things like amino acids seems to me quite out of place. We consume them all the time in various amounts.
Am I wrong about that?
The normal reaction to any supplement is for nothing to happen. Everyone is abnormal in some way, but the way in which each person is abnormal is different from the way in which everyone around them is abnormal.
I am noticing a major positive reaction to glycine, less major but still noticeable reaction to Vitamin C. Rather than label myself “abnormal”, I am giving thanks for finally finding what has been missing from my life for so many years. When you are suffering, and you finally find that missing piece that is the building block of your wellbeing, you rejoice. Count your lucky stars if you have never known such suffering - it is purely by the luck of the draw that you have always received the building blocks that you needed to experience optimum health.
I have nocturnal trauma and glycine is working for me daily at the moment.
Can you tell me what's up with an excessively high b6 test when I haven't supplemented with b6 vitamins and no fortified foods? Is it because cellular utilization is low causing excess serum level?
I wonder if those who suffer from hypoglycemia from glycine are taking the powder by spoonfull, directly in the mouth. The sweet taste may be initiating a cephalic insulin response.
Can you do addiction from the point of chemistry, I would like to know how you see it. To me things what are happening can have to do also something with dopamine, methylation, MTFHR, B2 and as also B/ and other B vitamines. It is interesting that people around are suddenly ill or even dead. I am using a smart phone too often noticing I am addictive to all the listening not really ndoing myself any long term good. I am annoyed about being that way and to cut it I practically decided to quit my phone internet connection. I have listened podcasts on dopamine, my npersonality was shapaed this way through traumas, I still think a trauma or even inherited trauma can be responsible for a polymorphism and a necessary different methylation? You know better. Like parkison the disease it also has to do something with dopamine. Also when you talkl about hormones I think hormons play a big role in lots of stuff, I eat different way through the months and actually notice the food is fitted to my hormones. Even DAO and estrogen and histamine etc.... it is different within a certain time of the moth.Thank you.

I have a negative reaction to glycine, it gives me bad anxiety. Do you know it does this to some people?
I am just listening Pet Anthony Mind( in German) she talks about trauma, but it is much more like from the point of cortisol, she is right what she says, like my whole mind set up, reactions and I really think even the chemical processes has been changed due to being traumatised, listen further now. See I cannot stop until I am very tired and I sleep in everage 4 hours per night like my sleep gets continuously discontinued or my mind thinks it must get up after 4 hours, but never mind this is ust an idea. if a trauma is explaonable as a chemical process. I have meditated and practiced yoga for over a decade. While these things have their place in balancing the nervous system, I also find that nutrition provides a very important piece of the puzzle. Vitamin C is necessary to replace lost cortisol. Salt supports the adrenals. Vitamin A helps the body recover from all kinds of stressors. And now we are hearing about the power of glycine. I encourage you to look into all of the available tools to support the body’s stress response. I believe that we were designed to be able to bounce back from stress. Interesting, could the use of glycine for sleep be related to the startle response too? Like make you less likely to be awakened by loud noises etc?
I eat around 300g of carbs a day yet taking even 1g of glycine gives me racing heart/dizziness for a couple of days. I wonder if that means i have high glutamate/low GABA. B6 P5P gave me a soothing effect (for a short time) which i believe is a cofactor in converting Glutamate to GABA? I dont want to give up protein and B6 is a tricky one. Slow COMT/MTHFR both het, AHCY het, CBS C699T het Fast MAOA. SNP wise it does not make any sense to me. I take B2 (100mg), retinol A, 1300 mg choline from food and sometimes take a methylated multivitamin though B12 and folate serum lvls were on the high end (with B12 going over the upper range).
Would Masterclass Membership get Chris to answer why things like why prolonged (an entire year) unusually high stress would cause fat to build in the face at a disproportionally high level , and strategies to combat this . I’m aware fluid retention and Inflammation are usually part of the equation . I’m 28 and I’ve stayed the same weight for years , fluctuating 5 pounds at most no matter what I do . Can’t seem to put on extra muscle either, even with workout + creatine and sufficient protein (sleep quality isn’t great tho, I do get at least 20 minutes of sun most days). Stress is still high but not nearly as high or as much anxiety as that one year period which was a few years ago . Also taking more supplements now to help stress/anxiety and making sure I’m generally covered when it comes to most vitamins/minerals/nutrients..
Puffy face plus inability to build muscle are indicative of iodine deficiency. Please research iodine. The RDA set by the government is not sufficient for many people for a variety of reasons. I highly recommend the book The Iodine Crisis.

Could there be another gene defect besides MTHFR that causes b6 deficiency?
I got a intracellular micronutrient test that found I had a severe deficiency in b6 and serine and lots of other nutrients. My folate was fine though. The functional dr put me on all the vitamins, I was doing good them bam all my health problems came back. I ended up being in and out of the er cuz I had some sort of seizure from being startled at night. I get startled easily and leading up to the attack I had all the symptoms of severe b6 deficiency, I realized the b6 I was taking was mostly inactive form, I was continuing to have attacks I couldn’t breathe my heart hurt and I got scared constantly, I was loosing feeling in my legs, sweating, lost perception of time all kids of weird things. So I overnighted active b6 Pyridoxal 5 phosphate, I took high doses of this and it completely erased every symptom I was having, when it wears off the symptoms return, Kaiser wanted me to go to psychiatry they told me I was crazy. I found another functional dr who found I have porphyria, so I was experiencing severe attacks that could of been fatal. B6 deficiency can also cause porphyria. I’m doing way better since switching to completely active b vitamins. My fiancé and friend got their tests done and found they too are severely deficient in b6 and serine ! What is going on

My last amino acid panel showed a very high ( too high) glycine status. I don‘t dare taking it now, l hadn‘t either before making the panel, but l used to put 10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen in my coffee every morning. What could too much glycine do?
Ingesting too much glycine causes diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, or vomiting. If you're not experiencing those symptoms, you're not ingesting too much.

10 g of hydrolyzed collagen doesn't give you more than 2 - 3 g of glycine. That's actually not nearly enough to reach an optimal level.
Experts say that we need at least 10 g of glycine a day for all its functions.
I think a good strategy for collagen is about 12 - 15 g hydroliyzed collagen a day, and some extra glycine because it's also utilized for building glutathion, and other stuff the body really needs.
When younger, you don't notice much from a too low collagen turn around. But it creeps up on you when older.
The bodys ability of converting amino acids into those you need for building collagen (glycine, prolin and hydroxyprolin) are reduced.

What if high serum glycine actually means it is NOT getting taken up by the receptors, which is the main problem Chris outlined in the video? There are many nutrients for which high serum/urine levels actually indicate deficiency in the tissues/bones/nervous system.

Solgar/Garden of Life/American Health were having major issues across all three lines. I heard it was due to an electronic system change (a technology transfer that did not happen the way it should). It should be sorted now.

Have you looked at hypokalemic periodic paralysis as a genetic hyperactive startle response? That is genetic. Also could you talk a bit slower? Wanted to understand but too many words too fast.

May be it doesn't matter and all my thoughts are a nonsense, even the question why I have chosne you to watch, understanding half way as you are studied and I wish being it myself doing all this on my own. I would think this is about me, but the people I stop by and listen to often have a similar beround within their cell. you also once talk about addicton, even alkohol but in a different contect that the way I mean it nit being an alkoholic I drink zero alkohol myself,but my grandfather was an alkoholiclike but a war prisoner traumatised alkoholic not a weak druker ok just to dlear that a creative hard working person. Like alkohol in the history had a use to sterilise bactezies etc... thisis an example. I cannot be looking away at all who are ill or dead within a seconds a short death. People who were smanrt thinking live the now are suddenly dead plus the cancer overgrouth. Please don't get mad at me, but you studied guys must do all this now, all together.
