This is my favorite as well. Jaime Laredo, Alexander Schneider, Samuel Rhodes, Leslie Parnas, and the four who were just becoming The Guarneri String Quartet.
Mendelssohn's Octet has always been a favorite of mine. Have THE VIENNA OCTET on London/Decca in a fine performance in my collection. Guess everyone will have their own favorite performance. THANKS DAVE !!!
Realizing I have YET to own a copy of the Octet, while you were talking I upped and ordered one performed by the Smetana and Panocha Quartets. I know I can't possibly be disappointed.
I first heard the piece not even as an Octet but with the full string section of the NBC Symphony conducted by Toscanini. I've since collected several legit Octet versions but I still like the Toscanini recording even if I'm not supposed to. ;)
When I have a difficulty to select my favorite version of a music, I tend to discard old recordings and privilege the ones with better sound. In general of course.
Hey David - I listened to the L'Archibudelli ecording of this on Friday after checking your chamber works beginners video i liked it so am going to imprint.with this one
Hi Dave, did you quit the fantastic Haydn-Symphonie-Thread? It would be soooo cool, if you could continue it... Best regards - and thank you for all the other stuff, Ekki
There is one "demented leader" recording: Meta4 and the Gringolts Quartet on BIS. The leader (the Meta4's first violinist, not Ilya Gringolts) takes a concertante attitude and embellishes, ornaments, improvises, etc. The other 7 don't. Real sore thumb stuff. Every other recording? Yep, great!
Some truly demented Lieder type person, huh? I am curious to know what you think about the Emerson Quartet’s recording. Would you say they pulled off a coherent octet? And what of the interpretation, given that you have only four minds behind the music? Not to suggest that the Emerson quartet are demented…
I would say Iolanthe is the most unkillable of all the G and S works. Even more so than their most consistently popular play the mikado, or pinafore, or even pirates. It's somehow very hard to make a bad Iolanthe.
For may years my favorite version was from the Marlboro Festival. It is so fresh and alive....what a great work

You won't be.
Thank you Dave. My wife loved the reference!

My only problem is that the first recording I got to know was the Heifetz one. Every other performance of the finale seems dead as a doornail to me!

Of course not. They are all coming.

Sounds fine to me.
