21:30 you guys misunderstood that COMPLETELY. I’m not even sure how you came to that conclusion. He said when he was in middle he was a good student who just studied and all the parents praised him but he had no dreams. Being an idol IS the dream. Being a blind student that just does well in school w no passion just because that’s what your parents want you to do is something BTS is encouraging students not to do and to find THEIR dream instead, that was like the entire point of the song.

Hi guys, when you pause sometimes you’re in the middle of a statement/sentence, maybe go back 5 seconds to get all of it. Every frame by this creator (Aneesa & Co.) serves a purpose, I hate when you (appear to) miss things. Being locked in is how we show our appreciation to them. And as I’ve mentioned when you watched episode 1, there is so much info coming at you besides the subtitles, and the little blurbs on any part of the screen, always glance at those too. They provide additional info and context. (In this ep, Bulldog was paying some attention to them.) EDIT: As others have said, 4:29 Tablo didn't say KPop was not corporate, his saying 'N No...' was meant as not MORE corporate than the West. Again, I think there are times when it would be helpful to go back 5 seconds and re-listen to anything you're not sure about, or to make sure you heard it right. 6:04 Tiger JK was not saying that heavy metal and rock stars influenced the music, he was referring more to the images and personas, and how style is cultivated. And I think others answered your question regarding the 'no more dream' concept.

  • @Me00Moi
    @Me00Moi 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

5:24 i think you may have misunderstood, no one is saying the whole idol system isn’t corporate. the problem is that western media portrays it as somehow MORE corporate than, for example, the american music industry. and it just isn’t true!
sports training camps and classical dance academies are some clear examples of this strict training regimen in the west! but with kpop headlines showing the dark side are basically for clicks and views… there’s systemic problems with the idol industry, yes, absolutely! but the (mostly western) media latch on to a few extreme cases and asume it’s all the same. the generalisation is the problem those people were talking about.

Like in the lyrics in the song he went for it and tried to make his dream come true so he is also telling that to other young people to go for it and pursue their dreams.

*Explaining music shows:* music shows in Korea aren’t like X factor or American idol in the US/UK. Korean music shows are for groups that have already debuted. No matter if you’re a rookie group or a group with 10 years of experience, once you release an album you go on music shows to promote your album by performing the main single for said album (and sometimes some b-sides).
Since music shows are everyone’s go-to to promote their new album, and there’s only a limited number of slots, it’s highly competitive to get on these shows and be able to promote your music to national audiences when you come from a small company (with little money and clout) like BTS were.
So, whenever you see BTS performing on a music show (which you’ll be seeing in just abt every episode going forward) it’s bc they are promoting a new album.

  • @thegeekoutgirl
    @thegeekoutgirl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

19:30 the music shows/competitions in Korea are mostly for promotions and to get people interested. it’s very vital for rookie groups to show that they have potential. so wins mean a LOT.

I think u guys misunderstood the meaning of their No More Dream debut song. Korean society as a whole tell kids that they need to study and work hard to eventually get a into a good college and then get a good job….that’s the main goal of parents. This song told the youth that there’s more to life then studying and working, that you could also dream…for example dream of becoming an Idol. So happy that BTS followed their dreams and not society’s dreams for them.

thats Tablo and no he wasnt paid to say that hes one of the most real artists there is in korea. what he was saying is that its not all corporate. where did you learn it was? hes saying dont treat them like a collective EVERY label works differently, there is no overall system and nothing is set in stone. drugs is banned in ALL of korea not just the music industry. many things you westerners link to kpop problems are korean society problems not limited to the kpop industry. all kpop groups drink theres no ban on drinking. SOME labels have dating bans its not a set in stone thing. bts dont have a dating ban and theres many idols who publicly date. stop listening to western media about korean topics listen to actual koreans who are telling you otherwise. also saying its like sci fi is linked to racism so check yourself on that. linking anything asian to robot-like is linked to western propaganda and racism called techno-orientalism. react to orientalism vs kpop by bbygangmag.

No drinking ban but you weren't suppose to do it on camera but Jin broke that saying he didn't care and well Bang PD let's them do basically what they want to an extent. Your comment comes of a bit rude. They are just learning you could explain it better. ARMY IS BETTER THEN THIS. ARMY helps explain things without thought not being rude because they misunderstood like I said they are just learning. Nobody knows that are just learning that are new.

@@kathyjohnson4212 i wasnt rude and even if i am idc theres some things that are common sense and im tired of western people pushing their narratives from media. also no there wasnt a dating ban for bts and it was label by label group by group there was never a overall ban. bts said they wish idols were treated like normal people but they did not specify which rules they were discussing. that was taken out of context to fit the narrative of trob story but regardless that wasnt bts reality. bang pd says he gave them freedom for everything and he didnt dictate how they live their lives that should be enough for everyone to know bts had it different. but even many other idols dont have bans and some never did some only had it while they were trainees some had it until they were adults its a case by case thing not a collective thing and that should be common sense. The person who made the series is a lady by the name of Aneesa. As far as I know, no one has officially reached out to her about the series. It is really good though. I'm not usually into documentaries but I binged all of this when I first found it. It was done so well and tugs at your emotions so you feel connected to it.
You were confused about the idol shows so let me try to explain a little. Idols are casted by a company/label, trained with a bunch of other people who were casted, then shortlisted into a smaller group of potential candidates who will be living together while they continue to train and practice. Eventually the final candidates will be selected and they're already signed to the label. When the company thinks their group us ready to debut, they will allow them to release their first album. Since there are such a vast number of groups debuting each year, idols need an opportunity to promote themselves, their talent, their style, their personalities and anything that could help them make an impression on the public. That's where the idol tv shows come it. It's simply there as a promotion tool for the idols, a way to give them practice in performing live in front of people, and exposure to the media who may write/report on them if they stand out enough.
Since these shows air frequently and the amount of slots available each day is limited, not every group will get a shot to promote on the show often. You may get to come on a few times, but if you're not as good for ratings as other groups then you may not get many chances to perform. Groups from the Big 3 are basically guaranteed a spot on the shows because they have a lot of connections with the media. They also are so well-funded that they can attract the best of the best raw talent, afford the best training, affort have the better styling/makeup/hair personnel and well done music videos and stage designs. Which of course means they're interesting to look at which can attract more fans which attracts viewers and raises ratings so that they get more slots on shows.
Other groups are sort of hoping for the best in terms of getting slots. It's also important to note that even seasoned idols who are years into their careers are still going onto these shows as well. BTS have still gone to shows and even Jimin did some promotions for his solo album on music shows. So the competition is tight.

21:29 No, they were saying their past self was good at school, but they had no dreams, they were study machines to please the adults. So the lyric of the song calls out past self and younger people: WHAT IS YOUR DREAM, this is your life. The shows are not talent shows, they are shows where you do promotions and can win weekly awards (for weekly charts). When you debut or have new material, you try to get in those shows. But BTS had minimal opportunities, since they were from a small company. The ones they god, they did good use of that air time, getting more and more popular with their amazing stage presence and performances.

They go on the music shows after their their albums are released, not just for their debut albums but for all new music releases and perform on them as promotion numerous times a week. The problem was BTS wasn't being invited to a lot of music shows because they weren't from one of the 3 big companies, so how do you promote your music if you aren't being invited to the shows. Not to mention they would cut the performances or not upload them to youtube like other groups. And if you aren't aware they actually have a winner for each show too. And BTS would sometimes be told to show up for a show when they weren't even nominated for the music show award. It would take them 2 years to win their first music show award but now I believe they have 164 music show wins (not including their solo wins).

This series was Aneesa's passion project. She had been a kpop fan before BTS debuted. It was important to her that the history and industry of Kpop was explained in order to show how BTS differed from other groups, but also had to work within the industry. It took Aneesa about three years to outline and storyboard this project. When she started putting each chapter together, she knew what clips she wanted and the story she wanted to convey. She had release the first couple of chapters (if I remember right--time was fuzzy then) at the beginning of the pandemic. Eventually, she found herself out of work (she is a professional editor and works in LA) due to everything being shut down.
There were 21 chapters released. She was working on the last two when things started opening up. She started getting jobs, she and family members had some health issues, and then she was called for grand jury duty (lasts 12 months and is basically a full time job). She never released the final two. She did say she had chapter 22 basically finished, but thought she might make some changes depending on chapter 23. All of the chapters suddenly were taken down and her channel disappeared. A few months later The Rise of Bangtan channel appeared with the 21 chapters.

It's strict like SPORTS CAMPS are strict. Like SPORTS PROGRAMS are strict. Like the Disney club music corporation is strict. This is why Koreans are offended when the West talk dark side of kpop but never take into consideration they run sports and aspects of the music industry the same way. It's why Tablo said where do you think they got the basic framework from. The ending is so they look cohesive plus they have a hierarchy. They have to leave politely. Korea's agencies are no different than Motown, or multiple other major record companies in the west. It's just modeled after an older model, the companies of the 60s and 70s. Also, the music shows are like variety shows, like we used to have - Solid Gold, Top of the Pops, that sort of thing. There's dozens of shows, and if you're lucky you will earn a spot on the big ones (ratings wise) to show your stuff, ie, debut a new album/song, etc. It's like when a western star goes on all the big talk shows for a new album, playing their new song and having interviews.

You seem to be confusing what these music show performances are. They're promotional shows for artists to perform their new singles and title tracks from their albums and sometimes some other songs from their albums. Any Korean artist who has released music will perform on some of the 7 different K-pop Music Shows across the various TV networks every week. Some artist perform everyday for a week. BTS could only get on a few. Debut showcases are a thing but these are normally for new artists from big companies which BTS weren't.
For example the new group ZB1 had their debut showcase a few weeks ago as they were formed through a survival competition show on one of the biggest TV networks and so they have instant connections through the industry that a group like BTS wouldn't have. Remember at this point in time BTS and Big Hit were broke and couldn't pay their way into things. They had to work for it harder than anyone else.

RM is saying that when he and other Korean kids are in school their dreams are not their own - they are their parents' dreams, ie for their child to become a doctor or a lawyer etc so BTS were (and still are) encouraging young people to follow their own dreams, not someone else's. In a lot of Asian cultures you are expected to study hard, pass your exams and get a good well paying job - to do anything else goes against what is expected (Suga went into rapping against his parents' approval). I think it would help if you didn't pause quite so much or waited until there is a pause in the video because you miss quite a bit of the context if you pause in the middle of a sentence/segment and don't hear exactly what is being said 💜💜💜💜.

I am thrilled that you see BTS for their whole package. These men are role models for our youth. I am almost 50 years old, and I am an elementary school teacher. I use the story of BTS to teach perseverance, standing up to bullies, loving one's self, kindness, humility, and the importance of group work. Students learn they can do anything they dream with hard work.

The editor is called Aneesa, she became ARMY in 2014 and released it for free, opened a patreon just for ARMYs to help her buy an editing software and computer and everything she made out of the series she donated back in honor of BTS!
There was supposed to be 23 episodes but she got a bit burnt out so there is 21 and she took down the videos as she was disappointed she couldn't finish this project (these are re-uploads to which the creator allows as she doesn't own any of the content)..
Idk if she got official recognition from Big Hit or BTS directly but not to my knowledge

Hey guys, Im a bit late but wanted to clear up some of your questions.
    1. Music Shows - these are a way for new groups to show off their music and gain fans. It's basically a promotion tactic. Groups compete against each other on several different shows to show off the new music they've released. Winning on one of these shows (determined by actual music chart performance and other stats plus live votes from the audience in some cases) could be a huge boost in popularity and gain them more opportunities etc. Its not to gaun them a record deal nor to prepare them for debut (the performances you saw in this episode WERE their debut on various music programs after they dropped their first album).
    2. NO MORE DREAM - The song is about encouraging kids in South Korea to dream big and chase those dreams. In Asian culture and in SK in particular, your parents often have a lot more authority over your life and what you spend your time doing than we are used to here in the West. And most often those parents want their kids to study hard (18 hours a day is not uncommon), get into a prestigious university, and get a job making good money (doctor, lawyer, government official, etc). This is often forced onto young people in spite of any other dreams or interests they may have. BTS want to encourage kids and teens to break free from this oppressive atmosphere amd go after the things they truly want (which will make them happy as opposed to being miserable studying machines).
    3. "Corporate" - the point that Tablo and some of the other people quited in the video were trying to make is not that the K-pop industry isn't focused on corporations. They wanted to point out that its actually not any worse kr better than the western music industry if you really pay attention and know how tje big companies work out here in the west. K-pop idols may have to learn to dance which is not common in the western industry, but if you look at how much is being demanded of the performers overall there is a lot of similarity between Korean industry and western industry. In the first episode, they drew a parallel to sports academies here in the west. This is all being discussed in order to point that a) the western media is unfairly critical of k-pop in an extremely hypocritical take and 2) to highlight the stark didference between how the idols are treated in the K-pop industry at large vs how Big Hit handled BTS (spoiler: BTS was much more involved in the creative side of their misic than a lot of idols ever have the opportunity to be, and they also had a lotore freedom).

I think you misunderstand. Tablo was saying people are viewing k-pop as if they are MORE corporate. There was a problem with Western media to keep writing articles and videos about “the dark side of k-pop”. This has always been a problem where Westerners think there’s always something wrong, suspicious, etc. with anything to do with Asians (and other cultures), but somehow America or wherever is somehow the best and better, pretending and ignoring the fact they are the ones who are corporate. When covid came, the increase in Asian hate crimes/violence rose so fast and so high, just because the story that the spread started from a guy in China… then suddenly everyone thinks Chinese people and Asians are the ones to blame for everything. A lot of this thinking is perpetuated by the narratives from Western media (and politicians/public figures) that are rooted in xenophobia and racism. I just think we need to be students of each other. Like learn that our own culture and history are and can be very different, and that our definitions/perspective may not exactly or accurately apply to other cultures, even within the US, UK, and other countries. BTS became THE guinea pigs or the punching bags for that stuff unfortunately (it breaks my heart what people say to them and treat them), and eventually made it easier for other kpop groups who follow behind them be accepted or have it easier. Anyway, it’s the big 3 companies that are especially corporate…because they are the big 3…they got the money and power…and they want to maintain and make more of course. So they want to control what makes them money. But…some of it has been gradually changing, and I think it’s due to the example BTS and Big Hit (now HYBE) as every year passes.

The whole kpop corporation thing is just saying that it's no different from any other corporations that you find in the west. Just look at Disney Channel stars and what kind of things you find out abt what they were and weren't allowed to do even after leaving Disney.
And kpop labels aren't that much different from western music labels either. While some might operate like certain sports label (with strict rules and requirements for their players/idols), that's not a uniform work culture for every label. Some can even be very lenient with their artists, with no dating ban or dieting/weight requirements.
It's just that the Big 3 tend to fall more on the strict and heavily regulated side of the industry, and as most bigger/long-lasting grps come from them, the more heavily regulated aspect of the industry is easier to see. But even then, that aspect can depend on the time period and idols (YG has historically given its boy grps more creative liberties compared to its girl grps, even today).
Also, age plays a factor into why newer idols and trainees tend to be way more restricted than older, established idols. These guys start training around high school age or younger, so no one's going to be giving them leeway like they're adults, as a general rule. But it depends on the label abt how restrictive they will be (esp for things like weight requirements), rather than any set industry rules/standards.
For weight, the sad truth is that the public itself will be the ones to typically drive idols into extreme dieting plans (heaven forbid sm1's face looks too round on camera bc no one will shut up abt how they can't manage themselves online, and _everyone_ has to make a fuss when sm1 has any kind of seemingly notable weight loss/gain).

This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)*
I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company.
I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)*
Now plz understand this 1st & 2nd episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

It's not that they aren't corporate, Eric was trying to convey that it's really not that different than the West. They took the Western concepts and merged them with their cultural ideas and came up with their system. There is a lot more to it. But if you think US corporations don't own Artists lives then you are sadly mistaken. Just ask Kelly Clarkson.

19:28 The Music Shows are to help them get seen by the public. Every idol group's management applies for these Music Shows to help PROMOTE their music when their album comes out. That's why earlier in the video (When Jin was crying) it said that music shows are a pressure to idols because shows only accept your applications when you can give them high ratings meaning when a lot of fans watch you on tv. Which is messed up for those not on popular/big entertainment labels because they have to wait until a slot opens up (for Example, a big group that was set to perform on the music show that day decided to back out because of a conflict on schedule) before they are then given the chance to promote their music on tv to gain fans. This is exactly what happened to BTS. They were only able/invited to perform when a group more popular than them backs out from the show. That is why they said they couldnt get on the show most of the time.
In korea, the fastest way to be seen by people and gain fans in the country is to appear on a Music Show and Variety Shows on tv.

Here Bts were with their debut album(other groups might have debuted that period I tone too, others not debutants, but their second , or 3rd, or... Album)
But there are several shows, and they promote their music to several, if not all, shows.. What in the US do on radio, with interviews, in Korea they do it with live choreographed performances

That doesn't even males sense. The director and the manager were repeatedly scolding Jungkook for getting his steps wrong during the shoot which was obviously not true. So when Jungkook told them that he is doing it correctly, they get angry at him and ask him if he is acting out bcoz they didn't celebrate his birthday. Obviously all of this was a prank and Jungkook did cry in the end bcoz he really thought he was in trouble.

Music shows get your music out in the public. New groups aren't played on radio, so music shows are the best way to promote and basically advertise themselves. But older established groups get preference on shows, or those groups from the Big 3 companies who had the power in kpop. So BTS were sometimes bumped from the line-up for a more popular/powerful group who were having a comeback at the same time.

    Hi!
~ the shows are for your promotions. They already debuted. The 1st time they performed was their debut day. And they will do moremusic shows for their promotions since they're new & need to promote their title track & album. It goes the same for everyone who has new album/single to promote. They go to music shows several times a wk for 1-3wks dependinf on how long they can to promote. & durinf those time while performing they can earn music show wins w/ a physical trophies. Bts got their 1st show win after 2yrs of promoting, it was for I NEED YOU.
~ the slots on these shows arw not free for everyone. They had a hard time to get slots bec they're from small label w/ no inlfuenfe. Most of the spots were quickly taken by those fromd bug 3 labels- Yg, Sm & Jyp. And most wins were from those big 3 labels.
Bts has d most music show wins in Korea (171 wins if im not mistaken). Their last ones were a triple crown (3 consecutive wins) for Take Two 💜
