  • We test the new 2020 Ford Transit AWD on our test track, including steep climbs and descents, cross-axle terrain, and embedded rock. This vehicle relies heavily on the traction control system for forward progress. While not an off-roader, it is certainly ready for vanlife travel around the world!

    Scott Brady! These are great vans and I kind of wish I had of waited a year to get the AWD model. I bought a 2019, SWB, medium roof transit van, built a basic interior and did a trip to Tuktoyaktuk with it. This year has included more mods like spare tire carrier and a ladder to get to the roof racks and a whole interior redo, I digress though. The 2WD van is surprisingly well suited for some off-road driving and I’ve been able to sneak it into some harder spots with some clever overload driving. I too went for the NA engine for the same reason though, the 2019 engine is even simpler, the 2020 engine is a PFDI engine. Which I think is brilliant, it is both direct injected and port injected. Each of the systems short comings are cancelled out by being together. Very brilliant if you ask me and not entirely complicated. As a certified mechanic though, I will say this, the newer engine will need some more particular maintenance because of the updated injection system. What a sweet engine none the less. Thanks for the video! I might just have to trade mine in next year!

    Now, this is a simple and fair review !
    For the old ones, lacking of low gear was an issue and will be nice to see more about this automatic low ratio gear. How this is working, does it have a reduction separate from the gearbox?

    • @ExpeditionPortal
      @ExpeditionPortal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The increased reduction is in the first gear ratio, the benefit of 10 speeds. It is a noticeable improvement.

    This was so helpful! I was wondering if a stock AWD Transit would be sufficient for rough (but no rock-crawling) types of terrain, or if I should budget for a lift or a Trail package. This answered many questions. Also I loved the mellow, vibey music. Good stuff!

    Great video. We're considering our options for a build next year and really want to understand the capability of the AWD system in Mud/Ruts vs a dedicated 4x4 system like Quigley. Would you have any further comments in this regard?

    • @MTrout5140
      @MTrout5140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Late but the benefit to a true 4x4 system is a transfer case with 4x4 low. That gives you the torque multiplication for rougher and steeper terrain and allows for controlled downhill decent without using brakes. Otherwise the awd system in the transit will be perfect for slick/wet/muddy conditions and light rocky bits but it's not designed for rock climbing.

      @@ericyuan9718 The transit and Sprinter are plenty wide enough for anyone up to 5'10" to sleep side to side. The Promaster is the lowest quality van you can buy. Personally, I'd never purchase any FCA product due to their terrible reliability record...and yes it is far uglier than any other option. The Transit would definitely be my choice, but I'd probably opt for the Quigley 4x4 conversion over the factory AWD. It's about $8000 more than the factory AWD, but low range 4WD is nice to have if you're doing any serious overlanding.

    • @ericyuan9718
      @ericyuan9718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlg5485 Actually the width of the Transit is only 5ft 9 (technically 5 ft 10 but u need room for insulation and walls). And that is only enough for around 60% of people. At least in Canada, 5 ft 10 is the avg male height. I've heard of poor reliability from both the Transit and Promaster though the Transit has a slight edge there, but it's not enough to justify the major space sacrifices that taller than average people will need to make by sleeping lengthwise. Convertible/Murphy beds can partially offset that, but making your bed everyday for a full time vanlifer is a major hassle. I've seen builds where the Sprinter/Transit had a window cut out exactly where the person's head would lie just to give in an extra 1-2 inches of space. Many folks will be cutting it close, guaranteed. That's why Promaster will continue to be the most popular. And also, it's a bit cheaper new and there's a larger used market to buy from.

    The 10 speed auto 4x4 would be my first choise for the USA and Canada. For international travel, the sprinter is more popular, because it is the only van that is build around the world with the same tech specs. Transit, Promaster/Ducato, Volkwagen ect. are build for special countries in many different tech set ups. For examble, the Transit in europe has most times frontwheeldrive and 6 speed auto or manua and diesel engines. 4x4 are only with manual trans to buy. Outside of America, Ford offers a factory camper van on the new full size models, the Big Nugget. Its sold official only over the ford dealerships.

    I have considered playing for one of these on the B.O.T.B online game, but it would only be useful if I were to go work as a delivery driver for AMAZON, and even then, A) I would have to be fit enough to do such a job and B) For the items the size this vehicle can take, I would need a workmate which I do not and am not likely to ever have, so I'll carry on playing for the vehicle I almost always play for my dream car, that is what the comp is all about after all is it not, winning your dream car.
    It may, may that is, be a more useful vehicle for the Australian outback should I ever move there and go looking for gold out in the bush in my spare time, but it doesn't really have the needed ground clearance.

    Hi bud I'm in ireland and a petrol or gas engine is no good here in Europe. You need a big diesel turbo 4 x 4 manual cause the green warrior fuel tax makes driving very costly. But we love our Ford's here they have a better resale value than Chrysler fiat, or modern Renault. So consider that if your coming to Europe, also a diesel van is much safer then petrol with spare fuel cans, and the diesel night heater can be piped straight into the fuel tank. Unfortunately even if I won a brand new petrol transit, I would have to leave it in the dealership and trade it in off a same speck diesel model instead. So the moral of this story is don't come to Europe in a gasoline van. Bye HAPPY Christmas

    So many Ford haters, as if sprinters are all as good! I wonder why people just hate "Made in America" I have two wheel version and am just loving it. I won't buy a sprinter because it's too long wheel base, compare to small space, not a good for agility, it requires wider turning,. Not a good option for traveling. It has all the same problem even more, with it's weak engine, and heavy load. If you don't have it, don't tell me it's bad.

  • @DrewDubious
    @DrewDubious 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the amount of mechanical issues the 2WD transit has, I can't imaging how bad an AWD version will be. These Euro vans all have huge mechanical issues here in the states. Personally I have a 12 year old E250 and I wouldn't even look at one of these to buy.

      I own one and drive a good 45,000 miles a year. The exhaust manifolds are terrible. The sliding door is also a problem but I'm using that more than most ever will(that door may open 30-50x some days). I don't see the door being a problem unless you're shuttling people in short laps. So overall, it's really not that bad

      @Chris IT is the same system, as for a 4x4 camper IT Has two huge disadvantages. No low gear and very low suspension. Suspension can be lifted but its also not easy to develop really good and safe solution. I will test US market transit soon and the plus od your market is the engines ;) 2.2 turbo diesel in europe is also a big joke.

      @Chris my friend i owned every possible 4x4 Sprinter from I gen including Iglhaut, Achleitner Mantra (69 ever made for road use with 6.9tonne max load) and some Oberaigners ("Stock") as well as permanent 4x4 Oberaigner. I also had a chance to test two Transits made for Europe and waiting for us version. Learn a little bit as 4x4 sprinter comes in about 7 different configurations including manual low gearing and 3 locker system ;)

    What? This is not an overland vehicle! It has 6.3" of ground clearance and dinky tires. Go anywhere even mildly sketchy offroad and you are going to get wracked up. I know.. i took one out and I was amazed at how quickly I had problems. Lift it and put bigger tires on it and you have a chance. How anyone can say a vehicle has poor clearance and then call it a good overlanding vehicle - doesn't make sense to me.

    • @ExpeditionPortal
      @ExpeditionPortal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ground clearance is not a prerequisite to overland travel. It is also easily remedied with a lift kit and larger tires.

    100k miles later that thing will be on its last limb. Maybe even a transmission replacement. These will never be a Mercedes Sprinter which can go 400k plus miles fairly reliably. The dodge promaster is the only thing worse than this ford. Fiat drivetrain in those.....run.

      I used to work on sprinters at the dealership. Ask your fedex guy how many miles are on his sprinter and I bet you it’s over 250k hard miles. These will never make it that far. Just admit you cheaped out that’s why you went Ford. There is a reason they stopped making passenger cars...reliability, better cars from competition and they have a terrible reputation.make sure to have a ton of cans of Bush’s beans so when you break down in the middle of nowhere you don’t starve to death.
