    So pleased its running Andy

    Andy, if nobody said already, the valve guide seals on these old Suzks harden and leak for a pass time. Dry and wet compression and leak down tests will pinpoint the issue. However, if you think it's the rings, be prepared for a cylinder hone at the least. All the best with this project, the GSs were a solid range of motorcycles.

      Hi mate, just to bring you up to speed. I have done a leakdown and a dry and wet compression test. The engine hasn't run for 20 years and was down on compression on #3, but only showed 30% leak. I had soaked with diesel to try and allow the rings to "free up" and that is what contributed to the plumes of smoke pumping out the pipe like a Rastafarian combi van. More work to do before I decide to open it up, there is still hope. Andy

    • @PRB1098
      @PRB1098 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, haven't had the time to watch all the videos, the diesel won't help the smoke, if so you may just be looking at the guide seals, happy days.

    That tune that played during the lube application cracked me up! ha ha.
    I agree with a lot of people here to let the bike go through some heat cycles and do another compression test before deciding to take it apart. doesn't sount too bad at all.

    Refitting carbs, hot air gun on rubbers, then sit astride and push both outside. That's what works for me anyways.

    • @Gassit
      @Gassit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably be better off getting new rubbers, The old ones are ancient and hard and may even be cracked, spray some washing up liquid on them while the engines running and see if you get bubbles Andy.

    • @MickMcNasty
      @MickMcNasty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Gassit you'll see easily if they're cracked. The hot air has a similar effect to heat on copper washers / gaskets. Makes them as supple as new for a while, very hot water works to, but that's a lot more pissing about.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did try the hot air gun trick. It did make them more malleable but I still struggled. I've fitted heaps of these things but this old GS was definitely the toughest yet. Once I got some even pressure on both sides with the clamps it was pretty easy. Thanks for watching mate.

      Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions enjoy most of the content, nice mix of stuff

    • @AuMechanic
      @AuMechanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred, for this bike and other 4t multis the problem is sealing to the carbs, clamping it down distorts the hard rubber instead of sealing it causing a slight leak that upsets idle a bit and that happens well before they get to the point of visibly cracking though the side of them.
      2 stroke often have thinner ones for reed and cracking is a problem for them but multi 4t manifolds are very thick and need a large crack to leak through the side.
      If you have to fight to get them on then they probably don't seal so well on the spigot.

    IT'S ALIVE! Doesn't sound horrible, no terrible rattles or such. You can save it.

  • @rtwolfrt
    @rtwolfrt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah, I'd be giving it more of a chance for the rings to free up, give it a few heat cycles, then a bit of a lap around on the down low.

  • @dowser81
    @dowser81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    She’s coming along nicely mate glad to see the old girl run. She started surprisingly easy for a big bike with low compression to be fair I would fire the tank on and take her out round the block for a bit then do another compression test.

    • @MickMcNasty
      @MickMcNasty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan Dow I'd agree, seal oil leak then let it heat up to running temp and a brief thrashing.

    Nice work Andy. I can't wait to see if those rings re-seat after all that diesel and if the compression comes back up - fingers crossed.

  • @MickMcNasty
    @MickMcNasty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I really don't think that's oil smoke, diesel burn off, I'd try fix rocker box leak then run it up the road briefly then drop oil and filter. I'd be hopeful you've done enough Andy.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah we had this discussion on Patreon a few days ago, that's the plan mate. Mind you without the road ride, no brakes and the tyres are split.

    It lives yea. Always so satisfying to hear it run when you’ve been slogging away at it into the early hours. The sense of joy when you’ve put in the hours,and she’s fought you all the way.great to see it coming together and the progress is quite quick really for an older bike. Keep up the good work Andy,and catch you next time.👍👍👍👍👍👍

    Nice to see it running, I hope the smoke is not too ominous! Loved to see Bazza in the thumbnail, he was a hero of mine, I watched him racing many times in the U.K. in the 70s when the top lads raced more than just the 500GPs.

    how about a small socket on that tap? you should get one to fit, then you'll have no need for a wrench as you'll already have one!
    Far easier and better fitting than an adjustable bodge-spanner...

    I almost died laughing watching the smoke pour out. Not sure how many holes you have tapped on Suzuki’s, but I was wondering if your taps feel tight when chasing threads. I find that any hole I try and chase to clean I find that I am actually cutting chips. I verify the pitch before I select the tap, but so far I am reluctant to tap any hole in fear of destroying the threads. Great to see the old beast come to life. My GS1100 is currently completely dismantled and I am focusing on the engine at the moment, but I can’t wait to bring mine back from the dead.

    • @edwardmalfroid946
      @edwardmalfroid946 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a spare bolt that I have run across the grinder on 3 sides to chase the threads. I just want to clean them out, not cut out precious material.

      Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions. yeah they are blumin difficult to refit took me a while on my gs 550 plus there's hardly any wriggle room on the 550! Hopefully you won't find too much wrong with the motor (smoke issue) fired up nice, great job you did of refurbin' the carbs.

    Good work sir, I recon Enfield will be worried now there's a GS1000 diesel on the way! I'm still smiling at the image on first start, just like an old loco' in the station. Which plugs have oiled up after running it for a while? Perhaps I missed it in an earlier episode, why was it laid up in the first place? If you don't know then I'm with the others below, needs more miles to perhaps save time and money?

      Hi John, we had a discussion on Patreon and it has been suggested that it may just be residual diesel, and it did appear to calm down a little the last run on this video. I will run it a few times and see if it doesn't improve, but it will have to wait until the weekend.

    Hey Andy, my son managed to get a gs850g for a slab, we have been working on it for a few months now. Would only run with the choke out so was expecting some carbon build up. When she fired up it smoked badly but after a few fangs up and down the er private road, cough, the smoke cleared. Must have been a lot of build up in the exhausts that got blown out. Don't be to hasty to rip the engine down mate, these things are near bullet proof.
