I love and hate them, I often want to perm them back or completely cut them, but I end up watching girls slaying the 4c hairstyles, and my lazy ass wish I was like them instead of being the twist and go type haha.

I usually put my hair in braids (weave) so I don’t have to deal with it or I just normally do high puffs😭😭. It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve been natural?? Also today is wash day. What is 4C?
A lot of black parents tend to give their black daughters perms from a very young age which makes ur hair really straight but also ends up damaging ur natural hair. My aunts and mom always permed my hair and now I have this one lil patch of hair that stays straight no matter what lol
do hair masks and repairing treatments and try to twist or finger coil your hair. trim the ends as it grows out and avoid heat for a while. 👍🏽
Omg yes, happened to me and my twin sister Xylinda. Started the natural hair journey in 2014 with her. Our hair are currently healthy too :))!
I think this was popular with those of us growing up in the 90's/early 2000's. However, with the amount of information we have now on how harmful perms etc are, I'd like to believe there are very few parents raising young black girls who are adding destructive chemicals to their kids' scalps.
Omg same for me, I managed to get my mum to stop putting relaxers in my hair last year and I’m doing my own hair now. I can finally embrace my natural curly hair☺️ takes a lot to make it healthy tho lol
My grandma did that to my younger sister when she was younger without my mom’s permission. My mom’s still pissed till this day. She had nice curly hair.

I’m also not loving the narrative that many black women put forth that we need to spend hours on our hair. If you don’t know how to take care of your hair, that’s fine, but the rest of us are not spending literal hours on our hair. It takes me max two hours to wash and style.

This is an example of why the natural hair movement is so precious. The fact that there are so many cultures who have no idea what our hair looks like is wild. Even I, living in South Africa, wasn't aware how beautiful our hair can be without straightening it until I decided to embrace my natural hair.
So true! My natural hair can't be tamed unless I braid it or do twists, etc. Wigs are easier for me as a protective style and time saver. But on vacation, I like having my natural hair out and let it do what it do (with products 😆). It's my truest self

I mean it’s not always about what society thinks about our hair lol. Sometimes we wanna wear wigs cuz they cute. And sometimes we don’t wanna have to deal with doing our natural hair.
My aunt has like a dozen wigs and wears them because she can just put it on and go, I have rarely seen her real hair
100% I love my Afro but i wanna start wearing wigs to try different textures and colors without damaging my hair, for cosplay, bc I’m not allowed to dye my hair ( I’m straight up 16 but my mom says my hair color is rarely seen in the black community so to leave it untouched), AND it’s an amazing form of self expression.
Very true, I don’t wear wigs but I do occasional box braids/passion twists for the same reason. It’s a nice break😭

As a black woman honestly wearing a wig is just easier. Sometimes i'm just lazy. It can also be used as a protective style. When it's extra windy and cold sometimes my hair and scalp feel dry and so having it in a wig and protected with a cap, keeping all the oils in, help keep my hair moisturized. Most of the time though i'm just lazy and having to not only do your hair everyday but the prep that goes into making sure your hair is easy to style the next morning is tiring. I'm glad you guys watched this video and i love the appreciation for black hair. I do also hope that this helps people understand a bit more why so many fans were upset about the portrayal of the character in Penthouse. The "reggae hair" or dreadlocks are viewed upon as dirty and unprofessional a lot of times as well. It can be used as a weapon to discriminate us and look down upon us.

@@joylynch5204 the worst part is other races that use the hairstyles they black people have used for centuries do not face the same kind of criticism. Maybe in a social circle but it does not effect them getting or keeping jobs the way it effects black people.

My hair also reacts in the same way at during the colder season, especially once it gets to my roots. It’s just a nightmare.
However, I personally just to a wig on without the cap. In my experiences, wearing the cap is more damaging. It causes more headaches and ruins my edges after a while, which takes so long to grow back.

I am a Black woman who has worn my hair natural for 23 years. It is not a struggle. It is my crown and I wear it proudly.
most say it’s a struggle because they expect their hair to behave like an european’s hair-- they don’t take the time and effort to actually love their hair and do what works for their hair type.
Same, 28 years strong. The misconception of 'struggle', even amongst us blacks, probably stems form the fact that most of our parents didn't know how to manage black hair, so our peers now have to go on, sometimes years long deep dives, to find the right products.
I'm 4b/c, (waist length when stretched), and my wash day don't take more than 2 hours, meanwhile some of us unfortunately still out here doing full, and sometimes multiple day wash routines.
But, thankfully, with more time and education, this will improve.

I have 4c type hair and wash day is like an 8 hour process🤣. Last Friday was the fastest I've ever washed my hair since I was able to find a video that helped me shorten my was day down. I've been natural since I was about 26/27 years old and I can't imagine straightening my hair ever again.
I don’t have 4c hair but my twin does. Her hair is really short but, I see her up at 12pm doing her hair and don’t finish until 6 😭

Having curly hair is pretty its just soooooooo much work to take care of and get it to look nice. Lots of styling, lots of hair product, and also depends on how you dry your hair. Mine also always changes how it dries so it never comes out the same. I think why people are jealous of straight hair is that you can like roll out of bed and it will look nice or if there is bed head you just get it wet again and it goes back to straight. While with curly hair its very rare that you shower and it comes out beautiful without doing anything to it. Also you have to plan and schedule your daily life around your hair and its just such a hassle, its hard to get your curly hair to look nice if you don't have the time. Also it takes so long to dry, I could shower in the morning and it will probably still be wet at the roots until the evening
@Hannan Olow I had a straightening perm in college and I was like "holy shit I can walk outside in the humid rain and my hair WONT frizz, wild" But after awhile it started to get annoying to keep up with and also I noticed it started giving me a lot of grey hairs. Ive been getting better with how to style my hair without heat but sometimes i just wanna go back to all straight
It really doesn't have to be that difficult though. You should follow I am Black Girl Curls on TH-cam. They're professional natural hair stylists and their way of taking care of natural hair, even 4c, is so straightforward and easy
@@keepinitkawaii Yes I was about to comment the same thing they need to get a natural hairstylist and/or watch black girl curls. Our hair can literally be so simple, I never thought I could shampoo,condition, and style my hair in less than 2 hours.

@@djlivvy46 I mean If I used a hairdryer thats inly to straighten my hair. And when I do use it, it just turns into a big fluffy mess and the hair on my nape starts to get curly again because im sweating to get all my hair straight. Blowdrying curly hair is difficult and will usually create more frizz which im trying to avoid
By the way it's not alway a wig, sometimes we chemically straighten the hair.
OR getting it blow dried.

They should try to watch Black's curly hair vary type by having Silk Press natural, which is nice to watch, which is not WIG but their hair can be straight naturally like that. There are lots on TH-cam, I suggest the Deeper Than Hair TV's channel. I love watching her videos, feel at peace or good by watching them. hehe

I've always liked my natural hair but everyone around me would always suggest to straighten it. (which isnt bad but its too hot for that 24/7💀) And if you black, you know the classic "what chu finna do to that head?" When you already styled it😭

I'm Turkish. Only eight percent of my country has curly hair. It was really hard to deal with my curly hair when I was young, there was no one around me who could show me how to take care of my hair. Even hairdressers didn't know what to do with curly hair. Everyone around me was praising straight hair. I hated my hair back then, I was insecure about it. Over time, I began to explore the right ways of care. I gave my hair the value and attention it deserved. Now I get a lot of praise and I'm proud of my 3C type curly hair. No matter what others say, give yourself the value you deserve. All your efforts will pay off!

I've never worn a wig and only had weaves on once in my entire life. As child my mom would just relax my hair so she could thread it easily. As an adult I would usually keep my hair short and get braids on occasion. I cut my hair again last week so it's super short and honestly it felt great and it helped reduce my depression and anxiety 😄.
Hope you have an awesome hair journey. TH-cam is an awesome resource to learn about hair as sometimes the local hair dressers arent educated.

For a very long time, I used to be embarrassed by my curly hair, simply because people made me look at it as a symbol of shame. I had to get my hair straightened only to understand I loved my curls.
Let your curls free, y'all. It's one of the most liberating things you can do.

It seems to be a white culture thing to look down on curly hair. At least when it’s on a woman. I said it’s because I come from a family where half the people have curly hair and half have straight hair but the women who have curly hair they try to hide it by straightening it or chopping it off and making it really short. I wanted to do neither and my mom changed my hair very harshly as I was growing up. At about the time I was 13 or 14 it got more curly maybe because of a hormonal shift and that’s when my mom used to tell me all your hair just looks messy. However, my hair would get damaged when I would straighten it and it took too much time because I was working going to school and I had internships so I eventually gave up and let her hate it. When I would see her that is. I still felt self-conscious of it and it wasn’t until I was in my early 30s that I began to embrace my curls. So this is very interesting reading this I didn’t know it extended to white and Hispanic but now it makes sense. It was my Hispanic friend who helped me feel proud of my curly hair because people in her family had curly hair but for some reason they enjoyed the curly hair and saw it as a source of pride. So whenever she was around me she would always say gosh your hair is so curly and beautiful. At first I would thought she was smoking some thing but as the years went by her positive feedback paid off. I have noticed a few other Hispanic families that I know seem to take pride in their curls. Obviously I have very limited experiences but I wonder if it’s more of a white culture thing to have straight hair and to praise straight hair over curly hair. Based on the fact that my family of origin is of course wait because I’m white and they discriminated against it.
It’s bc European beauty standards has been forced onto almost every other race by colonizers and racist ppl. It’s deep rooted within the black community and my generation is thankfully getting past and over it. It’s just something that has to be pushed out within generations.
Y’all’s curly hair is not the same as black peoples curly hair. Stop trying to relate so much and just acknowledge

Im Asian woman I've always told my childhood black friend that I have been friends with for 20 years now, that she looks like a princess. Also when I was in elementary school, my other korean friend really wanted to get had her hair perm like afro because it's looks so pretty :) I really think that mass media has brainwashed some people into believing something that is not reality.
I appreciate these kinds of videos, more now after I start loving my natural hair, going through a transition and a big chop.

When I was younger I didn’t really know how to take care of my curly hair so I straightened it ALL the time. On top of that I used to dye my hair because I wasn’t confident in my natural hair color. But once I got to my junior year of highschool I started to wear my hair naturally. No more straightening and coloring. It’s been severallll years since then and my hair is thriving. My natural hair color is back and my curls are popping. I love my curly hair 🥰

This video made it seem like it's a chore that we dislike with our black hair . Like we wear wigs and stuff bc we don't like our curly hair . Yes it's alot of work but love every magical part of it . My sister got fired from her job bc they didn't like her hair. One of her bosses ended up telling her that the other bosses at the job were complaining about how it looked. And they kept making comments to her about how they think she'd look so nice with straight hair. You can't even sue bc it's hard to prove. And I always wear wigs bc when I wear my natural hair ppl at my job pet me like a zoo animal. And if I tell them not to touch it then I'm being "aggressive" or "over dramatic". We can never win.
People who call you “aggressive” or “overly dramatic” when you set boundaries about consensual touching of YOUR BODY are *gaslighting* you.
I don’t know how old you are, but please stand up for yourself. No matter the cost. Do NOT let these people pressure you into being violated. Someone will say right now, “Oh it’s not that serious” but it is. Only you can teach people how to respect you or disrespect you.
I was in 7th grade and me and my other 2 black friends decided to get braids together, since we go to a mostly white school. When we showed up to school they dress coded us. They said our hair was a "distraction" and went against dress code and that we needed to take out the braids immediately or we would be suspended from school. We didnt take them out and our moms were pissed abt this situation and went up to the school defending us. That just shows how uneducated they were bc you can't just take out braids like white girls, those braids took us 4-5 hrs to get!
As someone who grew up with a mom who didn't know how to style afro hair (she's white Hispanic and my dad is black), it took me a long time to feel comfortable with my natural hair. I would hide it and straighten it and hated it until I finally just stopped and realized my natural hair is not that unmanageable or difficult at all (with the right products)! ☺

I was completely oblivious of the 'unprofessional' stereotype attached to curly hair. I spent over 4 years in South East Asia teaching & modelling, they absolutely loved my hair.

I can say I've always been natural, my mama didn't relax or perm my hair (use to be jealousof all the other black girls who permed their heads etc). and I use to hate when it was twisted because ppl wld make fun of me.. as I got older and went into high school, I received more compliments about my hair and how they wished they mamas didn't perm their hair... from then on I began to love my hair and wld show up to school with my afro big and confident!... tho its alot of work to maintain, I'm proud of my natural hair and thank God I was born a black woman and thank my mama for not falling into the social norm for me!! 💜💜

I’m not gonna lie this made me tear up a bit , I’m only 24 but I bullied for my hair and for being mixed therefore I started hating my hair but now I feel so lucky to have the hair I do. I love my beautiful, versatile natural hair. Unfortunately, natural black hair & braids are seen, by many in the 🇺🇸, as unprofessional, unkempt or “militant”. So black women either straighten our hair or wear wigs. It’s a remnant of slavery in the U.S. But times are changing & more and more women wear their natural hair nowadays!
