- On Jan 2 2025, the National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for my region of Upstate New York effective through January 5th. On January 4th, hearing how great the snowfall was in areas to the north of Utica, I decided to take a drive to check things out.
This video begins in New Hartford where the snowfall was a relatively modest one foot or so. A few scenes in Utica are shown, then northward up and over Deerfield Hill up to Trenton, Remsen, Forestport, Boonville, Port Leyden, Lyons Falls, then back south to Boonville on NYS Rt 12D, eventually over to Phillips Road in the towns of Boonville and Steuben finally concluding at the Baron von Steuben NYS Historical Site on Starr Hill Road, Steuben.
This trip came in at 111 miles. Had a great time! Witold, my canine companion, insisted on a 40 minute walk when we got back to Utica.
Here's the link to that Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern "drift busting" video I mentioned: • "Let The Snow Fly!!!" ...
Great Video!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make it, especially considering the weather conditions. I appreciate all the informative comments!! I plan on watching more of your videos.
Hey Sally 😊
My wife is bored but, I get excited when I see all these local places on here, especially the ones I already know lol
My Mom grew up in Newark NY , my Grandfather was an Engineer on the New York Central RR . He began his
career on the WEST SHORE RR in 1896 . He retired from the NYC RR in 1947 . The SNOW in that area , is Incredible as I Myself Remember . Cheers !
Love your content. I spent my childhood in New Hartford. Best years. Loved it and miss it. Thanks for the videos.
Hi from York, England! Thanks to you and Witold for braving the weather to bring us these views of the towns and lovely countryside in your area. The countryside looks lovely in the snow, but I'm glad I don't have to go out in it! Nothing like that where I am, so far....
watching from Clinton NY where the snow fall measures around 12". Thanks for sharing.
0 inches in Tampa! Thanks for the winter drive. Brrrrrrr.. 38 here last night. Beautiful scenery with the snow still on the evergreens.
Very enjoyable video. Thanks much for putting it together. We just got 14-18" here in Topeka, KS. 3rd highest daily snowfall since records have been kept.
This is a part of New York I wouldn't mind visiting I like the small towns
and rural areas that you drove through thanks.🌨🌇🇺🇲🌃🌨
We live here 😂 not just drive
Thanks Railroad Rambler, and Witold! Great footage, and narration. Watching in Miami.
The gentle rumbling of tires on snow brings back lovely memories of riding in the car all warm and snuggly as a child in the fingerlakes (a few years before I had to help shovel all the lake effect snow we would get!). ❄️🌫🌬
This is fantastic !! YOU did the trip I have been promising myself to take. Wonderful footage and great sights of this area. I have already sent this to half a dozen people I know who don't appreciate snow. LOL A couple of them here who have not seen outside of their yard yet this year. Great narration too. Thanks a bunch for this. It is a historical document as far as I am concerned. Thank you...
Thanks so much for your kind words, glad you enjoyed the video!
Just a note about kayuta lake. Yes it does feed eventually the barge canal! But it served the black river feeder which fed the black river canal in Booneville! Then south to get to the barge canal ( Erie canal) ! Have a wonderful day! Great road trip
Thanks for the extra info, WW! Good to hear from you!
Lake Ontario never disappoints north of Oswego go I've 6 feet with 10 to 12 foot drifts, if your in snow removal those days are good mines
I really enjoyed Thank you 65 inches ( 5 1/2 feet ) here in Camden, N.Y. in 3 days
I lived in Camden once. My grandfather used to manage the sawmill at harden
@@voxpopuli905 That's awesome. We got buried !
@ Rome got hit pretty hard last week too I noticed.
@@voxpopuli905 Yes they did.
Thanks for sharing. Quite a bit of snow but still not like I remember back in the 60s and 70s living in Utica.
This is what we would get in October in the early 1980s. Folks watching this channel couldn't imagine Utica snow in the 70s.
@@OutlawCamperChristmas 1978 in Utica was a green one.
Watching from Ohio. Where we live is a level 3 today. Grateful for your beautiful video. I really like those tunnels. They would make a beautiful picture on a calendar. Thank you and Witold for sharing your adventures with us. Bless you and Witold with good health and safe travels. ❤️🙏
Thanks! Happy New Year! Always nice hearing from you!
Memories of long snowy winters atop College Hill in the late 60's 😮
Wonderful video. As someone who grew up in the area it's nice to see that from the warmth of my home in Georgia. I used to work in Utica at Ray Benson Chevrolet on LaFayette St.
Pretty sure my late brother William bought his 1971 Vega from Ray Benson Chevrolet
@@railroadingrambler218 He may have. I worked there summers of 1971 and 1972 while attending Morrisville Ag & Tech College. Too bad he bought a Vega.
For reference, Watertown which is 60 miles north of Boonville has about 2 inches of very light snow on the ground. LAKE EFFECT went south.
Thanks to you and Witold for the ride along!! Some pretty country by you! We get our lake effect snow from Lake Michigan. I'm about 25 miles east of the lake here in southwest Michigan. Everything you said about lake effect snow is true!
It is beautiful!
Thanks for the ride! I have been to some of the places that you drove us to, but many years ago.
I have been so happy that the snowfall happened further north of us (Edmeston, NY). The high winds mostly blew the snow away while in the past, the winds gave me drifts of 2 feet at times.
I am still shivering. I love to look at the snow, but, I'm glad tolive in So Cal. It was 70 here today.
Never knew that part of New York was that scenic. Thanks for sharing your video.
How lovely! Thanks for sharing. Hi Witold!
Wow! Floyd NY got hit in areas, Westernville got around 3 to 4 feet. Areas of Rome here got at least 2 1/2 to 3 ft depending on winds. It's still snowing lightly with fine snow. Thanks for the "joy ride" and helping us "take a look-see" at the snowy places that I longed to go see again.😊 Watching from Rome, NY
I was in the Killer Blizzard of 77 which paralyzed Buffalo NY and Southern Ontario....Source of the snow.....snow blowing OFF of the frozen Lake Erie.....
Loved this! My Grandpa F owned the (right side) farm at the top of Starr Hill Rd! He grew blueberries and Christmas trees (and other things). It’s kitty corner to Latteiman Rd. Great sledding and snowmobiling! Missing it from summertime here in Buenos Aires!
Nice country up there for sure. I've visited the Steuben Memorial many times over the years.
Eight inches of snow in my part of North Yorkshire, England today.
Love this travelogue. Please do more!
Since friday night, Baldwinsville has got probably about 18 inches.
Interesting tour; where I live in Canada we just got enough snow to cover the lawns (about 6-10 inches) and it's getting colder. We'll send you some more haha ! Vitold follows everywhere, a faithfull friend (deserves a treat now).
It's great to get some snow finally.
Great video. Old lake effect joke: "There is 7 inches of partly cloudy in my driveway."
Lol!
Thanks Rambler from overcast lightly sleeting North Carolina
Please retrace this drive in the summer, just to show people the real new york.
BTW, South of little falls we have about 8 inches from this winter event
Thanks for the ride.
Interesting....Video reminds me of shopping at the Boston Store in downtown Utica a looooong time ago.
Some of it has to do with where the mid-latitude low tracks. Wind blowing across the Lakes behind the low picks up the warmer water, condenses it over the shore and dumps it! Buffalo is known for its lake effect snow falls!
Thank You for showing me what it looks like back in Utica, Ny area .. Utica was my home where i lived most of my life. I'm watching now from Northern Virginia. I have been here 23 years now. We don't see a whole lot of snow here in Virginia. However, we are supposed to get 5-8 inches starting around midnight here. We have not seen snow like this in a while. 😉
Hey rail rambler you got more snow than I did. Not even a foot in Earlville. Hope MAN RR sents a plow on next run .
Love it my friend! Excited to watch this one! There's something really awesome about Lake Effect snow! Thanks for making this one!
Thanks for giving me the idea!
@railroadingrambler218 ha ha...I love it! Not too many places on Earth are "lucky" enough to experience LE snow! Rare & wild phenomenon.
nice video bud
I was told that was a wooden trestle at first from the rt12 bridge past the under pass on old Poland Rd then they filled it with gravel.
wow, tunnel very cool!
I enjoyed "the ride" with you. I felt like I was right there with you and Witold. Perhaps a plow extra is in order to clear the MA&N.
Looks that way, Wm!
That bridge halfway up freezes way quicker . Lots of drivers get surprised
Remsen Village 14.10 Settled by the Welsh. I am Welsh i live in North Wales which is part of the UK . We had a Snow Storm (6" Snow) on January 4/5th over night! where i live looked like a Scene in your Video 🤔. All the best for 2025🤗
Probably why the Welsh decided to settle here. Thanks for commenting (I was hoping someone from Wales would!)
Vitold is a sweet boy. ❤
How did you get plowed streets in New Hartford for this video? Whitestown plows down to the pavement, but when you cross that town line (Yorkville/New York Mills), New Hartford leaves snow banks in the roads like barricades. Good on ya!
Vitold is like: "let's get back to the warm car! Brrrrrrrr!" 💜💚💙
How old is Vitold? Such a cutie pie!
He is 11 (born in November 2013, I've had him since he was 8 weeks old)
Thanks
Tonawanda has very little accumulation (ha,ha). 😂 Cold enough…
No RR tanker cars lined up yet in Lyons Falls??
Trying to follow your trip on a map.
When I visit my wife's family in Fairfield I go 12 to 28. Don't like the Old Poland rd shortcut.
No tank cars in Lyons Falls yet; they usually begin bringing them up late January/early February
@@railroadingrambler218 I've seen the hundreds of black tank cars in recent years in Boonville - Lyons Falls area. Do you know story why they are stored there, was always curious? Thanks for the video, I have a camp in Lewis Co. which I rarely visit in winter.
A wonderful adventure that reminds me of the reason I head to Okeechobee Florida during the winter months. I don't miss the white stuff, even a little. Do you think the Adirondack or Susquehanna will do any plowing during this? Btw, i don't think Witold thinks too much of that. Lol
The MA&N for sure, not certain the Susquehanna will call out their plow but it's possible
I live an hour's drive west of Revelstoke B.C. and we have no snow. It's just brown and very concerning.
Is the Trenton Station liquor store the original station ? It was on the left just before you went under the bridge leaving Mapledale.
The old passenger station was just beyond Trenton Station Liquor on the other side of the tracks. It was demolished when the highway was widened.
I'm surprised you don't see a bunch of snowmobilers out today.
Saw a few, thought there'd be a lot more though
Ahh, yes, New York weather is one of the few places you can get a mix of Tropical Summers and Arctic Winters a year.
Was Lyons Falls RR customer Boise-Cascade?
Take good care of that yardstick. They’re not making them any longer.
It's a relic for sure
Did I see someone in Remsen towing a camper? In the snow?!!? :o
Snowmobile trailer Kimmie!
@railroadingrambler218 Ahhh, now that makes sense!
🤣at least he blamed it on the wipers and not on Witold.
Witold's farts are silent (but deadly)
My uncles and cousins have a camp in Montague NY in Lewis County. Several times in October/November we would have to leave quickly due to lake effect. One time my uncles got stuck and received 7 feet of lake effect snow in 24 hours. Don't miss those days. Thanks to you and Witold for the memories.
Great comment! Yes, Lewis County is in the heart of snow country.
Oh ya eehh blame Canada for the wind 😂
lol
❤❤❤❤
Thats the other end of Downer hill rd dead ended
Come back monday you will be shocked!! 4’ + cumulative
Snowflakes here but not sticking in NC
Catawba county here
It is NOT a "winter wonderland" to me at all!
I hate snow on the valley floor where I live.
Dump all the white crap in the mountains for water in the summer!
👍😀😀😀😀🚂🇬🇧
I live in Watertown NY, I assure you ROAD PIRATES AKA law enforcement are everywhere. Anywhere there is people with money there are police ready to take it.
