It's easy to say something is better than _most_ movies Will Smith has been in though. In spite of his talent, he has _zero_ standards. I mean he's worked with both Bay _AND_ Shyamalan, he'd probably work with the likes of Jason Friedberg, George Lucas, Lucifer Valentine or Uwe Boll if they asked him.
I think that's intentional. Hollywood knows he has a pretty big fan base thanks to the MCU so might as well make his animated counterparts resemble him in case the voice alone won't be enough to attract fans.
Going off topic for a quick sec Taxpayer dollars are used mostly for the military when the education and maybe putting some money into the national debt have a significantly smaller percentage going into it... so yeah it is a vile waste of american Tax Dollars

I don't know, i actually liked this movie alot. Sure, i guess they aren't memorable, but i don't think thats what they were going for. I think they're just going for fun Family spy movie. Also i liked how some scenes they didn't over explain the emotional scenes, and yeah, it has a pacifist message to it, and a "we're better together" style message, but about 90% of stories do. And while some things just can't be fixed with a pacifist resolution, there's nothing wrong with that kind message. I mean, who doesn't want world peace? All in all, i feel like this movie is just supposed to be fun. A good, cheesy pizza and popcorn movie to enjoy on a boring afternoon, not something to overanalyze to much.
I actually noticed while watching this movie that there's a scene that is ripped straight from The Lego Batman Movie. I guess The Emperor's New Groove wasn't enough.
I agree with him on everything except the pigeons and the animation. Bland movie with no good characters which squished some good ideas into flat writing.

The anti weapons message in this film was a nice theme. We rarely get a lot of films like that. Overall, I really enjoyed it and found it to be very underrated in terms of animated films
I look at this the same way I look at How to Train Your Dragon: It's a terribly cliched film that has it's done-to-death elements but I personally think the filmmakers' effort more than made up for it. I think the execution of the story is good enough to justify it's James Bond meets Emperor's New Groove concept. That, and it's honestly one of the funniest movies that 2019 has to offer. I couldn't even recall a moment where I wasn't laughing out loud. So yeah, I personally think it's a great movie. Maybe not as good as The Peanuts Movie but I'll happily take it over Ice Age: Collision Course anyday.
I highly disagree. *SOME MAIN SPOILERS ON THE WAY YOU’VE BEEN WARNED* The movie doesn’t pretend to be a ground flick, it’s its own flick that presents a different type of telling a familiar story. While yeah the movie is majority directed towards kids, it has really important messages that involves ETHICS and morals, not simply a non-violence message, there’s a deep substance in it and that’s primarily developed from Walter’s character, the primary protagonist of the story. The addiction’s to depth that have been given to the characters already adds a major point to the movie: Walter is presented as a creative inventor that has ever had a chance to prove his ideas and inventions because the idea of facing the evil without killing anybody it’s absurd and so there’s a substance into the “trying to change the system”, which is a really good setup to start from, in addiction, there are presented MULTIPLES of mortal gadgets in the spy agency, so we can assume that the spies’ priority is to stop the criminals with eventually killing them and not just arrest them or such, even when Lance is escaping from the other agents they expected him to hurt and badly injure them to escape. Turning back to Walter’s character, he’s not simply a pacifist, but he has a strong belief in what he wants to do, he has a light of hope that honestly, is really touching since we learn that he looses his mother because of the system, and his persistent and belief for a young man (I saw he’s like 19/20 years’ old) it’s really neat. In addiction, I loved how they characterized him with major girl’s interests like glitters, kittens and Korean love shows and that this characteristic is not pointed out as a insult from the other characters, they just mock him for being a weirdo that wants to change something unchangeable. For Lance, he’s not the typical selfish spy, he’s just aware that he’s the greatest spy of the agency, but for that he doesn’t insult or denigrate others just because he thinks he’s cool, he knows it, but doesn’t use that an excuse to mock others, not even Walter, he just doesn’t believe in his ideology because, in fact, it’s impossible. There’s this beautiful confront that really feels natural between the two when they’re on the boat and in certain ways it’s shown an ideology that it’s actual in these days, seeing the morals and really heavy ethical ideology about killing or not a man from its actions, who’s good and who’s bad, there aren’t such differences and we can agree more or less with either Walter or Lance. Plus for Lance’s character, his major concern is not just have been turn into a pigeon for the sick of it, but mostly because he knows that Killian is a really dangerous criminal that will hurt other people if he doesn’t stop him, so he wants to stop him not for “being selfish”, but for people’s safety. Also, it’s not foreshadow that Lance, being the best spy, killed a lot of villains to protect others, and that adds even more substance to his character. Speaking of which, the movie is also pretty dark: murders is implied multiple times, Killian kills people during the course of the film and it’s shown and, always Killian, is about to kill the protagonists in several occasions, especially Walter, I legitimately freeze in the scene when Killian stepped on Walter, LIKE JEE IT’S REALLY HEAVY! And this choice of adding to the movie so many heavy thematics can also justify the decision of have so many funny moments, and the two topics are combined organically. Of course the movie has it issues, there can be jokes that are not as strong as others and yeah, the villain could have been certainly be used better, not his backstory since I like the idea that he was already a bad guy before his meet with Lance, and there are things there could have been improved, but under any aspects I would ever call this a bad movie. It’s a really solid film that has a really good message, amazing and lovable characters, all combined with a really fluid and wonderful animation. Shame on me that I didn’t mention it before, but the relationship between Walter and Lance is the best aspect of the movie that make me love it even more: well develop, great dynamics and sincere care for each other adds another great element to a really amazing movie. I really don’t understand your points and why this would be such a mediocre movie from your point of view, but still I respect your opinion. I think Killian was the only thing I remembered from this movie. He was so badass. From his motives, to his design, to his voice, he was the only amazing thing I got from this movie
Even though this movie wasn’t definitely spectacular, I think blue sky has a great future with Disney. I’m excited for their next movie Nimona since it’s being directed by Patrick Osborne and it came from the writer of she ra 2018.
Official budget of Spies in Disguise is 100 Million, it has made half of it so far...in the end, Disney will look at the box office, so let's hope that they make a decent revenue in the end.

If I had one dollar for each time an animation studio tried to copy Will Smith's look into their movie, I would have two dollars, which is not much but it is weird that it happened twice
For me, it doesn't matter how much a certain type of story has been done before, what matters is how it's presented and because of how inventive I thought the action scenes are and the main duo worked off each other, I would say I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Shame we have to wait ANOTHER two years for Blue Sky's next film, and that one I have high hopes for.
I feel like this movie will be seen as an underrated gem for some while others will see it as a mediocre film. Although for me i don't think it's mediocre, it's a good film when you consider what the lineup has been for Blue Sky these past few years. Peanuts is still better but this one is a close second. I would personally give a 7.5/10.
Honestly, my only complaint was the villain. I too was expecting a bit more backstory for him and Lance Stirling. Other than that, I found the movie to be very enjoyable. Will Smith and Tom Holland were by far the best parts of the film. I don't think anybody else would have been able to sell this as well as they did.
If you ever remembered the villain's lines "You took everything from me", that means it's already hinted enough for Lance to remember that the day he messed up the mission in Kyrgyzstan, he had planted a bomb just like Killian even mentioned in the film, and Joy even knew that incident. The villain in the movie is the only guy who doesn't tell the overall details about his backstory, because all he needs is for Lance to remember everything he had done to the people and why he became a cyborg. That line he delievered, he just made it clear that Lance critically wounded the guy physically and emotionally. That's it, that's the answer I can give it for you.
Well, wouldn't it be stereotypical if the villain started monologuing about his past? People would probably add that to "overused cliches". We got to know enough for the here and now feeling in the movie.
Like a lot of other Blue Sky films, I thought "Spies in Disguise" was a decent, fun movie. The biggest highlights for me were Will Smith's performance as Lance, the animation for the action scenes and gadgets, and the fact that Lance changed back into his human form for most of the third act. The latter part is a breath of fresh air when it comes to films that involve a character turning into an animal. Although, the one major issue I had was how they handled the pacifism message. Now of course I have nothing against solving problems in a peaceful manner, and this movie presented it decently with Walter's gadgets and Lance's development. However, I still would've preferred it if they balanced it out by having Walter take Lance's advice on using violence when necessary against dangerous criminals. It could've worked as a way for both characters to see eye to eye, rather than feel like everybody has to follow one guy's philosophy in order to have a better life.
Agreed. Using violent tactics doesn't always mean it's evil or the person is messed up when using it. Some movies need those "There is a time to use peace and harmless tactics but then sometimes u gotta use heavy things to get the job done, including killing someone.
Personally I enjoyed “Spies in Disguise”. As for how I’d rank my favorite Blue Sky films. Here’s how I’d put it. 1. The Peanuts Movie 2. Rio 3. Horton Hears a Who 4. Ice Age 5. Spies in Disguise 6. Epic.

Really Animat, you give Lightyear an 8/10 but you give SID a 5/10. Seriously name one thing Lightyear did better than this. No one calls this an ENG rip off because the chemistry built between and Walter is like a Father and Son relationship. Lance pushes other people away because he has suffered loss and wouldn’t wish upon anyone especially Walter. Not only is this a sweet relationship but it blends well with the spy theme and the message of non violent action the movie conveys.
Tbh, I thought this movie will suck, especially after Lance turned into a pigeon but I surprisingly enjoyed it from start to end. I rate it a solid 7/10 (7.5 at most)

Now that I see what's happening, I get why it's like Emperor's New Groove. If you mix it with James Bond, Mission Impossible, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Fast and Furious, maybe even Watch Dogs as well. Plus, I never knew it was based on a short from over a decade ago like when Nut Job got the same treatment. But I can easily pick this over The Nut Job films. What's gonna be next with films being based on animated shorts? Do we get one based on Fat (2011) (Commonly referred to as "Fat the Film), Reversal of the Heart ( also from 2011, but by a different director and 2D animated), or the many animated student films done by Ringling College, Cal Arts, or even Bristol UWE? If there are some student or independent animated shorts that are worthy of becoming a movie, then fire away.
Everyone forgot the point... that Lance is the one who made the movie existed because of the accident he made in Kyrgyzstan and made Killian existed. He made the climax of the movie existed. A lot of reviewers forgot the importance of the characters like 'why' 'what' 'when'. Killian is also important, he became a victim in Lance's hand, and then he decides to murder the entire agency for what they've done to him.

I found the movie to be OK. Not something I would see again, but I'll give it this: At least it's better than Ice Age: Collision Course. But to be fair, it doesn't really take much effort to be better than Ice Age 5. I will give it credit that the animation and the action are fantastic, and the voice cast for the most part does a good job with what they are given to work with. Unfortunately, the material that they have is not so good. The plot is basically The Emperor's New Groove, but lacking the heart and clever comedy. I can tell this movie is trying to have a heart with the message of pacifism, but the reason why the heart isn't effective is because of how poorly executed the story is and because they constantly try to hammer that moral in every opportunity that they get. That, and the comedy is just plain juvenile at best. I rarely found any of the jokes funny. I'm sure Will Smith and Tom Holland can make a funny movie, but this just wasn't it for me. So while I wouldn't place it among my Top 5 Worst Movies Of 2019, I wasn't really a big fan of Spies In Disguise, although I would rate just a bit higher by giving it a 6/10. It has its moments, but they're not enough to make me want to see it twice.
For my opinion of the movie it was rather decent. The good stuff is few of the jokes. Will smith. My favorite part is the animation where it’s beautiful and the character designs can be fitting for a animated spy movie. The flaws is the story has some cliches with some elements of Emperors new groove and some jokes are cliched and Walter is annoying and uninteresting and also Walter keeps reminding me of Flint Lockwood from Cloudy. Since Disney now has Blue Sky in their hand there could be hope that Disney will improve Blue Sky
@@MrLopez2004-t9x Yeah it looks a bit better because his nose is smaller but part of the reason I don't like animation is because it can be overly goofy sometimes and that was seen in Walter a few times. I agree I am not a fan of the ridiculous, over expressive character animations and designs in Cloudy. Both characters look too underweight though. I'm not a fan of Walter's design, because like I said, the character copied too much of Flint.

Well the movie wasn't very "Anti Weapon" about the way I thought about it before watching the movie. I've seen so many horrible movie reviews and cringe scenes in them that I had not a doubt this was going to be disappointing and I'mma be ashamed of having watched that. But there, I watched it now and needless to say, the movie absolutely wrecked that thought progress and burned it to ashes. It's not so breathtaking that I'd think there could be nothing better than that, but even if it were bad, there is always something WORSE and perhaps traumatizing. If you and the people in the comments say this film was horrible. Oh boy..
I agree with you for the most part, however, I disagree about the pigeons and the animation. I didn't find any of the characters well-written due to their flat personalities, especially with the secondary characters, the pigeons, and the villains. The protagonists themselves are just two-dimensional. The pigeons didn't have much purpose outside of either doing cheesy stuff or just having no personality. Most of them could've been removed and it wouldn't change the plot at all. They have no character development, almost zero personality, and very little agency. I really don't get why animal sidekicks are so loved in fiction, several of them don't even do much or have any sort of character development, nor are they that well-written. They're no Toothless, that's for sure. Lovey even does the cliched love at first sight thing with Lance too. I think that Lance and Marcy had the potential to be good characters but they were just too underdeveloped to be compelling. Several good ideas in there were just executed poorly. I wasn't a fan of the animation and I thought considering you didn't used to like Sony Animation, I was confused as to why you find the animation so good. It has a similar goofy style to Sony that you hated. The characters, especially Walter looked like Sony's lanky, weird character designs. Story: 2/10 Animation: 4/10 Characters: 2/10 Final Score: 4/10
I give this movie 8/10, there is are so many great elements to this movie. Including the voice acting, the animation, the soundtrack, the action, the comedy, the villain, the side characters, the drama, and above all the chemistry between Lance and Walter done through the hilarious pigeon plot that fits so well with the spy vibe. Its a father and son like bond between a boy who grown up without parents and needs someone to look up to. Along with a man who work alone pushing people away but is revealed to have lost friends in his past missions. It’s such a great premise that all comes together awesomely. I do have problems with it but not that many. I love this movie one of the best Blue Sky movies.

Fr!! There were so many funny parts and the movie flows really well, there wasn't any scene that felt too rushed or dragged on too long.

All in all, i feel like this movie is just supposed to be fun. A good, cheesy pizza and popcorn movie to enjoy on a boring afternoon, not something to overanalyze to much.

It looked epic and adorable, compared to how it is typically told. So much promise, yet, it gets pushed to one side. It was even teased in Zootopia.

The anti weapons message in this film was a nice theme. We rarely get a lot of films like that. Overall, I really enjoyed it and found it to be very underrated in terms of animated films
especially for a kids movie i can only think of one other non violence aniamted films aimed at them but i thought this movie did it better
I look at this the same way I look at How to Train Your Dragon:
It's a terribly cliched film that has it's done-to-death elements but I personally think the filmmakers' effort more than made up for it.
I think the execution of the story is good enough to justify it's James Bond meets Emperor's New Groove concept.
That, and it's honestly one of the funniest movies that 2019 has to offer. I couldn't even recall a moment where I wasn't laughing out loud.
So yeah, I personally think it's a great movie.

I highly disagree. *SOME MAIN SPOILERS ON THE WAY YOU’VE BEEN WARNED*
The movie doesn’t pretend to be a ground flick, it’s its own flick that presents a different type of telling a familiar story.
While yeah the movie is majority directed towards kids, it has really important messages that involves ETHICS and morals, not simply a non-violence message, there’s a deep substance in it and that’s primarily developed from Walter’s character, the primary protagonist of the story.
The addiction’s to depth that have been given to the characters already adds a major point to the movie: Walter is presented as a creative inventor that has ever had a chance to prove his ideas and inventions because the idea of facing the evil without killing anybody it’s absurd and so there’s a substance into the “trying to change the system”, which is a really good setup to start from, in addiction, there are presented MULTIPLES of mortal gadgets in the spy agency, so we can assume that the spies’ priority is to stop the criminals with eventually killing them and not just arrest them or such, even when Lance is escaping from the other agents they expected him to hurt and badly injure them to escape. Turning back to Walter’s character, he’s not simply a pacifist, but he has a strong belief in what he wants to do, he has a light of hope that honestly, is really touching since we learn that he looses his mother because of the system, and his persistent and belief for a young man (I saw he’s like 19/20 years’ old) it’s really neat. In addiction, I loved how they characterized him with major girl’s interests like glitters, kittens and Korean love shows and that this characteristic is not pointed out as a insult from the other characters, they just mock him for being a weirdo that wants to change something unchangeable. For Lance, he’s not the typical selfish spy, he’s just aware that he’s the greatest spy of the agency, but for that he doesn’t insult or denigrate others just because he thinks he’s cool, he knows it, but doesn’t use that an excuse to mock others, not even Walter, he just doesn’t believe in his ideology because, in fact, it’s impossible. There’s this beautiful confront that really feels natural between the two when they’re on the boat and in certain ways it’s shown an ideology that it’s actual in these days, seeing the morals and really heavy ethical ideology about killing or not a man from its actions, who’s good and who’s bad, there aren’t such differences and we can agree more or less with either Walter or Lance. Plus for Lance’s character, his major concern is not just have been turn into a pigeon for the sick of it, but mostly because he knows that Killian is a really dangerous criminal that will hurt other people if he doesn’t stop him, so he wants to stop him not for “being selfish”, but for people’s safety. Also, it’s not foreshadow that Lance, being the best spy, killed a lot of villains to protect others, and that adds even more substance to his character.
Speaking of which, the movie is also pretty dark: murders is implied multiple times, Killian kills people during the course of the film and it’s shown and, always Killian, is about to kill the protagonists in several occasions, especially Walter, I legitimately freeze in the scene when Killian stepped on Walter, LIKE JEE IT’S REALLY HEAVY! And this choice of adding to the movie so many heavy thematics can also justify the decision of have so many funny moments, and the two topics are combined organically.
Of course the movie has it issues, there can be jokes that are not as strong as others and yeah, the villain could have been certainly be used better, not his backstory since I like the idea that he was already a bad guy before his meet with Lance, and there are things there could have been improved, but under any aspects I would ever call this a bad movie. It’s a really solid film that has a really good message, amazing and lovable characters, all combined with a really fluid and wonderful animation.
Shame on me that I didn’t mention it before, but the relationship between Walter and Lance is the best aspect of the movie that make me love it even more: well develop, great dynamics and sincere care for each other adds another great element to a really amazing movie. I really don’t understand your points and why this would be such a mediocre movie from your point of view, but still I respect your opinion. Now you that had read all my thoughts, thank you very much, now excuse me I’m gonna fill myself again with Walter and Lance’s father and son moments x3

For me, it doesn't matter how much a certain type of story has been done before, what matters is how it's presented and because of how inventive I thought the action scenes are and the main duo worked off each other, I would say I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Shame we have to wait ANOTHER two years for Blue Sky's next film, and that one I have high hopes for.

I feel like this movie will be seen as an underrated gem for some while others will see it as a mediocre film. Although for me i don't think it's mediocre, it's a good film when you consider what the lineup has been for Blue Sky these past few years. Peanuts is still better but this one is a close second. I would personally give a 7.5/10.
Honestly, my only complaint was the villain. I too was expecting a bit more backstory for him and Lance Stirling. Other than that, I found the movie to be very enjoyable. Will Smith and Tom Holland were by far the best parts of the film. I don't think anybody else would have been able to sell this as well as they did.
If you ever remembered the villain's lines "You took everything from me", that means it's already hinted enough for Lance to remember that the day he messed up the mission in Kyrgyzstan, he had planted a bomb just like Killian even mentioned in the film, and Joy even knew that incident. The villain in the movie is the only guy who doesn't tell the overall details about his backstory, because all he needs is for Lance to remember everything he had done to the people and why he became a cyborg.
That line he delievered, he just made it clear that Lance critically wounded the guy physically and emotionally. That's it, that's the answer I can give it for you.
And bruh, the villain did mentioned about his backstory but he doesn't need to tell him that much, he's talking to the guy who had already been there.
Well, wouldn't it be stereotypical if the villain started monologuing about his past? People would probably add that to "overused cliches". We got to know enough for the here and now feeling in the movie.
Like a lot of other Blue Sky films, I thought "Spies in Disguise" was a decent, fun movie. The biggest highlights for me were Will Smith's performance as Lance, the animation for the action scenes and gadgets, and the fact that Lance changed back into his human form for most of the third act. The latter part is a breath of fresh air when it comes to films that involve a character turning into an animal.
Although, the one major issue I had was how they handled the pacifism message. Now of course I have nothing against solving problems in a peaceful manner, and this movie presented it decently with Walter's gadgets and Lance's development. However, I still would've preferred it if they balanced it out by having Walter take Lance's advice on using violence when necessary against dangerous criminals. It could've worked as a way for both characters to see eye to eye, rather than feel like everybody has to follow one guy's philosophy in order to have a better life.
Agreed. Using violent tactics doesn't always mean it's evil or the person is messed up when using it. Some movies need those "There is a time to use peace and harmless tactics but then sometimes u gotta use heavy things to get the job done, including killing someone.

Really Animat, you give Lightyear an 8/10 but you give SID a 5/10. Seriously name one thing Lightyear did better than this.
No one calls this an ENG rip off because the chemistry built between and Walter is like a Father and Son relationship. Lance pushes other people away because he has suffered loss and wouldn’t wish upon anyone especially Walter. Not only is this a sweet relationship but it blends well with the spy theme and the message of non violent action the movie conveys.

I don't remember but definitely not that Aladdin remake aka the most overrated Disney movie ever.
Now that I see what's happening, I get why it's like Emperor's New Groove. If you mix it with James Bond, Mission Impossible, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Fast and Furious, maybe even Watch Dogs as well. Plus, I never knew it was based on a short from over a decade ago like when Nut Job got the same treatment. But I can easily pick this over The Nut Job films. What's gonna be next with films being based on animated shorts? Do we get one based on Fat (2011) (Commonly referred to as "Fat the Film), Reversal of the Heart ( also from 2011, but by a different director and 2D animated), or the many animated student films done by Ringling College, Cal Arts, or even Bristol UWE? If there are some student or independent animated shorts that are worthy of becoming a movie, then fire away.
I really liked this film. I thought it was hilarious and I loved the action scenes.
Everyone forgot the point... that Lance is the one who made the movie existed because of the accident he made in Kyrgyzstan and made Killian existed. He made the climax of the movie existed.
A lot of reviewers forgot the importance of the characters like 'why' 'what' 'when'. Killian is also important, he became a victim in Lance's hand, and then he decides to murder the entire agency for what they've done to him.

I found the movie to be OK. Not something I would see again, but I'll give it this: At least it's better than Ice Age: Collision Course. But to be fair, it doesn't really take much effort to be better than Ice Age 5. I will give it credit that the animation and the action are fantastic, and the voice cast for the most part does a good job with what they are given to work with. Unfortunately, the material that they have is not so good. The plot is basically The Emperor's New Groove, but lacking the heart and clever comedy. I can tell this movie is trying to have a heart with the message of pacifism, but the reason why the heart isn't effective is because of how poorly executed the story is and because they constantly try to hammer that moral in every opportunity that they get. That, and the comedy is just plain juvenile at best. I rarely found any of the jokes funny. I'm sure Will Smith and Tom Holland can make a funny movie, but this just wasn't it for me.
So while I wouldn't place it among my Top 5 Worst Movies Of 2019, I wasn't really a big fan of Spies In Disguise, although I would rate just a bit higher by giving it a 6/10. It has its moments, but they're not enough to make me want to see it twice.

When I saw this movie with two of my friends, one of them said lance reminded him of mr Incredible.
He reminds me more of Frozone, and Walter reminds me of... every young male animated human protagonist ever.
For my opinion of the movie it was rather decent. The good stuff is few of the jokes. Will smith. My favorite part is the animation where it’s beautiful and the character designs can be fitting for a animated spy movie. The flaws is the story has some cliches with some elements of Emperors new groove and some jokes are cliched and Walter is annoying and uninteresting and also Walter keeps reminding me of Flint Lockwood from Cloudy. Since Disney now has Blue Sky in their hand there could be hope that Disney will improve Blue Sky

I agree I am not a fan of the ridiculous, over expressive character animations and designs in Cloudy. Both characters look too underweight though. I'm not a fan of Walter's design, because like I said, the character copied too much of Flint.

Well the movie wasn't very "Anti Weapon" about the way I thought about it before watching the movie. I've seen so many horrible movie reviews and cringe scenes in them that I had not a doubt this was going to be disappointing and I'mma be ashamed of having watched that.
But there, I watched it now and needless to say, the movie absolutely wrecked that thought progress and burned it to ashes.
It's not so breathtaking that I'd think there could be nothing better than that, but even if it were bad, there is always something WORSE and perhaps traumatizing. If you and the people in the comments say this film was horrible. Oh boy..

Spies in disguise is just a straight up a Marvel Agent of shield animated movie
I agree with you for the most part, however, I disagree about the pigeons and the animation. I didn't find any of the characters well-written due to their flat personalities, especially with the secondary characters, the pigeons, and the villains. The protagonists themselves are just two-dimensional. The pigeons didn't have much purpose outside of either doing cheesy stuff or just having no personality. Most of them could've been removed and it wouldn't change the plot at all. They have no character development, almost zero personality, and very little agency. I really don't get why animal sidekicks are so loved in fiction, several of them don't even do much or have any sort of character development, nor are they that well-written. They're no Toothless, that's for sure. Lovey even does the cliched love at first sight thing with Lance too. I think that Lance and Marcy had the potential to be good characters but they were just too underdeveloped to be compelling.
Several good ideas in there were just executed poorly.
I wasn't a fan of the animation and I thought considering you didn't used to like Sony Animation, I was confused as to why you find the animation so good. It has a similar goofy style to Sony that you hated. The characters, especially Walter looked like Sony's lanky, weird character designs.

I give this movie 8/10, there is are so many great elements to this movie. Including the voice acting, the animation, the soundtrack, the action, the comedy, the villain, the side characters, the drama, and above all the chemistry between Lance and Walter done through the hilarious pigeon plot that fits so well with the spy vibe. Its a father and son like bond between a boy who grown up without parents and needs someone to look up to. Along with a man who work alone pushing people away but is revealed to have lost friends in his past missions. It’s such a great premise that all comes together awesomely. I do have problems with it but not that many. I love this movie one of the best Blue Sky movies.
