- Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body's tissues
An artery which is made up of three layers called tunicae. These layers are the tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica adventitia.
Tunica intima
The innermost layer of the artery wall
Made up of a single layer of endothelial cells, which line the lumen
Also contains a basement membrane and subendothelial connective tissue
Tunica media
The middle layer of the artery wall
Made up of smooth muscle cells, connective tissue, and elastin
The smooth muscle cells allow for vasoconstriction
The elastin allows the artery to stretch and recoil in response to blood pressure changes
Tunica adventitia
The outermost layer of the artery wall
Made up of connective tissue that anchors the artery to surrounding tissues
Larger arteries also have small blood vessels called vasa vasorum that supply blood to the tunica adventitia
