as far as ive seen those signs are in areas where it is not needed and is not necessary and are usually in residential areas. so if you are going the posted speed limit or whatever you deem to be safe then you will be fine but if you are going faster than you know you should be to the point where you need to drop 10 or more mph to go around a curve then that is your fault.

Bisbee has a steep grade and just feet south and down of US 80 on this part are public and private buildings. Los of control could result in the city facing the question, how do we retrieve a tractor/trailer off the roof and the second floor of the library and what's the cost of fixing it? Is it worth it because of it's historical significance to not only the city but the county and state as well? Will the feds help, since the post office occupies the first floor? There is also a large presence of Environazis here as well. The kind that is in large part responsible for Phelps Dodge (now Freeport-McMoRan) all but leaving.

The responsibility of safely descending any grade has always come down to the driver, not a "requirement" to use a certain type of optional equipment.

I had a V8 Cummins 903 years ago and couldn't wait to get into a town and release the Jake beast. It had it's own style of bark for sure. Loved it. But in serious measure it worked well if driven correctly. I always use the philosophy of using the same gear downhill as i would uphill and never had a problem. Could flick the Jake between half and full depending on what it was doing. In the wet empty could catch you out if switched on full retardation, the rear wheels would actually lock up and slide. The switch on full going uphill at 40 ton I could change the RR up as it brought the revs down very quickly, trying that without the Jake was a waste of time.

I might help you there! Imagine having big coil springs on the soles of your shoes. If you jump you will compress the springs and they will hurl you back up in the air. Your downward force is storing energy in the springs, and it is given back to you by uncoiling all that stored energy and sending you at least some of the way back into the air with no effort from you other than what you add by jumping back up at the same time to achieve equal or even greater height than before! Now imagine you were jumping on a sheet of plywood suspended off the ground and at the moment the springs collapsed to their maximum point they shot right through the plywood! You would simply land hard and all that stored energy would be wasted! A trampoline would be similar- it stores and releases energy also unless your feet tear through at the bottom of the downward stroke! Now on to the engine. When a piston is in a compression stroke, and imagine you add NO fuel shot at that moment, the piston would "spring" back down just from the stored energy alone in the compressed air at the top of the stroke. NOW, if "something" (the Jake mechanism) opens the exhaust valve at that exact moment when the maximum energy is stored in the highly compressed air, all that energy will be "wasted" when it goes roaring out the exhaust pipe instead of boosting the piston back down. It took a lot of horsepower (COMING FROM THE WHEELS NOW THOUGH SINCE YOU ARE PLANNING TO STOP AND THE WHEELS ARE DRIVING THE ENGINE) to compress all that air, and instead of recovering the "spring" effect it is wasted out the exhaust! It is the SAME principle of driving an air compressor with an electric motor! Horsepower used up in compressing the air and no recovery of energy in the air compressor cylinder. It all leaves the compressor cylinder through a "type" of exhaust valve! So you see that any horsepower delivered to the engine THROUGH THE WHEELS is used up with the Jake system, AND IT AMOUNTS TO BRAKE POWER! SOMETIMES MORE THAN THE RATED HORSEPOWER OF THE ENGINE, SINCE "BRAKING HORSEPOWER" OF 10 BRAKE DRUM/SHOE COMBINATIONS CAN BE CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN THE FEW HUNDRED HORSEPOWER OF THE DIESEL ENGINE WHEN IT IS POWERING THE REAR WHEELS! A very interesting thing is this: AN AMATEUR in a truck can CRASH the truck if he is not loaded, OR if there is ice or EVEN RAIN on the road and all that power available inside the engine COMPLETELY STALLS THE ENGINE AND OF COURSE STOPS THE WHEELS FROM TURNING AT ALL!! Just like slamming on the brakes he will Jacknife before he ever recovers any means to get those wheels turning again and the engine running again!!!

This also is explaining why you will see increase in boost pressure and egt will not drop as fast while using jake brake. Air cannot enter the engine as much, creating a airflow restriction making your boost gauge read up a bit, and egts will not drop as much or as quick due to heat energy being generated and not just allowing air to flow through if you have the brake off and no throttle applied. If you wait, you can actually watch your egt climb back up a little bit when you hit the jake brake.

The federal government has required all vehicles manufactured since 1978 to meet noise requirements when delivered to the customer, so trucks have been required to meet the requirements when they leave the dealership as new vehicles for quite some time. The real problem here is modified or defective exhaust systems. The use of the engine brake is not the problem. Citizens and truck drivers can both do their part to keep the noise down. Citizens, encourage your local police to stop noisy vehicles and check them for muffler integrity. @charlieodom9107 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@1320fastback to a certain extent, you are correct, but not all the time. Certain conditions have to be met. You are referencing DFCO, which, depending on the vehicle tuning, requires certain speeds, rpms, and loads.
DFCO works best when the timing is set to near 0, but you get no engine braking this way. Most manufacturers set DFCO timing to allow for a progressive engine braking curve, but this makes the system work less efficiently. Personally, I tune mine to limit engine braking to maximize the time DFCO is activated, except on towing vehicles, which I set for maximum braking.
Also, modern automatic transmissions unlock the TCC at 0 throttle, thereby drastically reducing the braking effect during DFCO. This can NOT be changed by programming in most modern vehicles, so you are stuck with a shitty DFCO system that doesn't save much on gas.

    Hey Jacobs,
If [hypothetical] my big rig is a hybrid-electric type, do you recommend ordering the diesel genset with the Jake brake deleted as, if the drivetrain supported it, I could use the electric motors connected to the wheels as engine-retarders that also charge the batteries?

    • @JacobsVehicleSystems
      @JacobsVehicleSystems  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Hi Ellenor! One of our engineers took a look at your question. Hope this helps with your hypothetical question.
There is no reason for any diesel genset to have an engine brake installed; if the vehicle is using a genset, then the engine won’t be in a position to impact braking.
In a typical diesel-electric system in a locomotive, the diesel engine is actually driving a generator (genset), which supplies electricity to the motors driving the wheels. In this arrangement, a Jake brake (indeed, any engine retarding system) will not help to slow the vehicle, as it is not part of the drivetrain. Foundation brakes and regenerative braking are the only choices here. Diesel-electric locomotives use the electric motors to brake, but they dump the power into resistor banks to be dissipated (as heat).
In a hybrid fuel-electric system where both the engine and electric motors are connected directly to the drive train (such as in the Prius), both an engine brake (if the vehicle were so equipped) and the electric motor could be used to slow the vehicle down.
Note that the power dissipated by a 4,000lb car braking, and a 40,000+lb truck braking, and a train braking, differs by an order of magnitude. In electronics, as you deal with more power, components become bigger, heaver, more expensive, and have to dissipate more heat. (As a side note, the Jake brake dissipates that braking power as heat by sending it out of the existing exhaust system.)
In any situation where you have an electric motor in the driveline, you have the potential for regenerative braking; the issues are how much braking can you get from it, and how much efficiency you are willing to pay for. If the electric motors alone move the vehicle, you could reasonably expect them to also be capable of slowing the vehicle; the same may not be true if they are supplemental power to the engine. Also, the heavier the load, and the more rapidly you decelerate, the more power you need to get rid of. If you want to recover more of the energy you are losing, you need to pay for more batteries, and more electronics to manage the batteries, and more space consumed by the batteries, and more weight consumed by the batteries. (This is in direct opposition to the design goals of making the vehicle lighter and cheaper.)

    • @railrider2000

There's just enough clearance between the valve and the piston that they don't hit each other. They can come very very close, but never touch.

Every diesel engine should use this system. Are they used in public vehicles, like transit buses, or school buses? I would think it'd save on wear and tear on the service brakes.

from the map in the clip, one might infer that 'jake brakes' are not sold or installed in trucks intended for use/sale in Canada - but almost every commercial truck I've ever driven had a Jake brake; who's giving bad information here?

  • @pauljb6207

Opening the exhaust valve on the compression stroke makes no sense to me. Simply turning off the fuel injector would have the same effect, this could be done via engine management without the need for mechanical changes to the engine. Also by eliminating the compression stroke the engine temp will fall to low.

The Cummins ISX 15 has significantly greater engine braking power (250+hp greater) than the ISM, mainly due to the size difference and haul application. Which ISX configuration do you have and are you comparing the same loads?
