    Although this video was made years ago .... it is very much still relevant!! I am a newbie to orchids, including epidendrums which I have grown to love. My only epidendrum is the Latilabre (small green and white blooms). I LOVE the cone design - I'm stealing it for when I get e.radicans!! I hope you see my comments, even though it is 8 years too late.

    Hello, María! I did enjoy watching your video. When I was a kid I remember seeing epis while travelling with my parent. I liked those panicles full of color climbing up near the roads. And when I began with the hobby of orchids I was surprised to know that this was in fact one of the many orchid types. So, today it's definetively my favorite orchid after some 13 years planting orchids. Epis are the mamas of all mamas for me LOL. I want to add hybrids to my collection, though very happy with the ones I have that are native to my country. Greetings all the way down from Venezuela!

    Thanks Maria! This helped a ton! I purchased an Epiphronitis veichii (Epidendrum radicans x Sophronitis coccinea) and wasn't sure how to take care of it. This thing came to me with a 3 foot stalk and I thought for sure I had gotten in over my head. When I searched by the name all I got were pictures. No care instructions. I finally searched for radicans and your video came up and your propagation lesson helped me realize that I wasn't going to need a hole in my ceiling to let it grow. :P I know this video has been around for a while and I have a lot of catching up to do. I really appreciate your work as it is both helpful and entertaining. Keep up the good work. Thanks again.

      Thank you so much!!! ...and I am so happy that my videos have helped you! I love radicans because they are one of the easiest orchids to grow...also there are so many different ways you can grow these...you can opt to grow them in pots, in a baskets, attached to a tree or right in the ground...they are amazing! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WONDERFUL 3 FT MONSTER! and thank you so much for watching...HAPPY GROWING! :)

    Thank you Maria for posting this video. People often under value these beautiful Epidendrums, they are my favourite orchids as well. Epidendrums are what got me started in the hobby when I was gifted with a few Keikis during my holiday in Durban last year. A friend there grows these beauties directly in her garden where they flower profusely, which she can do because of the humid sub-tropical climate! I now have four varieties in my collection and have yet to see their amazing flowers in my collection, but I'm hoping for them soon. I will be going to Durban again in 6 weeks so excited to see how her varieties are doing this year :D

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YES I DO LOVE THEM SO...for their ease of care and also their durability!!! I actually leave them outside in the winter (Florida). They are able to endure extreme temps and always bloom as if nothing ever happened!!! One of the easiest orchids to grow and multiply that's for sure. Good luck with yours and I am so hoping that they do bloom for you soon. When you visit her garden again you should take pictures and post it on my Facebook at My Orchid Adventures! I sure would love to see them!

    Your video was perfect and exactly what I was looking for! With so much out there on the internet, you were the only oasis out there! I have for many years been a huge fan of this variety of orchid and purchased my first one a year ago at this time, a purple one. It has done so well in this climate I live in, here in southern California, I was surprised not see more homes with them as well. My mother and I want to start cultivating them around our homes and sharing them so we went out and picked up a pale pink one and bright red. However we did not have a clue how to propagate until now. Millions of and many thanks!

    Maria, this was such an interesting video. I am very pleased to learn how to propagate epidendrums from stem cuttings and am going to try it later today!
    By the way, I first saw your tip about not cutting spent flower spikes so that keikis can form, on a previous video of yours. I always used to cut them off the minute they finished flowering so only ever got a few keikis. And lots of my friends want this orchid!!!
    By the way, I'm in deep envy of your climate and the vigorous growth you get out of these plants.
    Thank you very much for posting.

    Well I never! Just look at you in this vid, so quiet and demure, lol. It must have been your first? And that tree! So much smaller with virtually nothing but pots around it. The difference from then to today is SPECTACULAR!
    When I first saw these orchids in your garden, I thought nah, not showy enough, too untidy blah blah. Now I have changed my mind. I managed to acquire a few keikis here and there of different colours, won a few raffles and door prizes at the Orchid Society and even have some named varieties. Well most are too young to bloom so I am playing the waiting game, but I just learned an awful lot about them watching this vid.
    Whilst visiting a friend late last year, I saw a massive display of orange epi's growing in monster pots right the way along the front of a house. I just had to stop and knock on the door to talk to the lady grower. She gave me a keiki, and a few monthis later I dropped a pink one off for her. I have never seen such a massive beautiful display of these plants before, it really got me interested in them and I am now going to try and replicate what she has.

    Loved the video. Just got some clippings from San Diego but just some other readers had shown concern, I am not sure about what kind of media to use. I do have some top soil but am afraid that it will be too damp and may rot the roots. I HAVE killed orchids before. (who hasnt?)

      Bahman Ghashghaei Hey there...when I say that these Orchids are one of the most easiest Orchids to grow...I mean it!! I have some in Orchid Mix material (moss, bark and soil) and I also have some growing right in the ground of my garden. I find though that these grow the most healthiest in a partial sun environment or a bright, shaded area. Good Luck (not that you'll need it) and have lots of fun!!! ...and I just recently created another video on some Orchids including Radicans...so if you get a chance, check them out! :)

      No I did not use any growth hormone for the new planted Orchid. I just used part soil and part Orchid Mix and that is it. These are such easy no fuss plants that I think sometimes people tend to over care for them and that is when they don't do so well. If you check out my update video on this you will see out awesome the propagated Radicans are doing now. It's absolutely WILD!!! They are taking over my garden...but I don't mind...I LOVE THEM! LOL!

    Thank you for this video! A month ago I got a small keiki of epidendrum radicans 'Ballerina', with 3 little roots. I planted it in fine bark, but it hasn't done much since then. It's alive and well, but didn't grow or made new roots. Now that I saw this video, I wonder if it's because I used only fine bark? Maybe I should have used more moist retentive soil? I'll mix some sphagnum in the media and/or some potting mix like you use. Maybe it will get it going. I have no experience with epidendrums. What is that little nubbin it has in the stem, quite low, next to the roots but above it? Does it make a new root or a new growth from it? ps: I laughed so hard at what you said at 17:30 :D "You can't win, I will propagate you anyway" :))

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea Soilander Yea I used quite a mixture on this one...but like you said make sure you add a lot of other material to give it good air circulation. Also when they are babies you can also give them a little more assurance by planting them in complete sphagnum...to ensure that they stay moist...or try both and see which method works best for you. BEST WISHES. :)

    I have a doubt as I got an Epidendrum keikei last year, is blooming now, and was looking for his identification and just came here with Google help. I was thinking if this is really a E. radicans. Mine has flowers like some you show here (pink and yellow) and, like yours, it has a less common feature in orchids: it's non-resupinate (according to here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resupination#Orchidaceae). I was more inclined to identify mine as E. secundum but now I don't really know... Can you help?
    Thanks anyway

      These orchids carry many names...and it is all up to what you want to call them by...Epidendrum secundum are accurate as well. I have other videos on these orchids that give detail on their growth structure and habit and culture. Thank you so much for watching and HAPPY GROWING! :)

      These types of orchids are pretty easy to find. Sometimes you can find them at your local Lowe's or Home Depot usually being sold in the spring to summer months. You can also find them at orchid nurseries and at online orchid nurseries or eBay/amazon etc... These are very easy to grow and can multiply at a rapid rate and is known to bloom abundantly. I hope you are able to find some soon I am sure you will be happy with them. Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!

      @@PictureMaria1 Thanks sometimes the weedy orchids are the most rewarding, i have lots of wild eulophia grammenia in pots wich make lots of nice fragrant flowers. Ps you are allowed to take them from the wild in florida seeing as they are invasive and they are everwhere. I wish though that there were invasive cattleyas in florida.

    I would like to know once the orchids take root. Do you leave it in the dirt or transplant them into tree bark?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plant-lover robinson ...these little guys will almost grow everywhere...I have some in the tree in a wooden basket container in the tree...they started out in there and then began to climb on the branches and everything around it...so I actually rooted them in the wooden basket container and then placed them in my tree...but these will actually grow in pots and also in regular garden soil just as long as the dirt doesn't get to compact and hard...they still need to have some aeration in the soil. Good luck with them...once they establish themselves they can grow like crazy...but in such a beautiful, blooming way!

    Hello Maria, If this epidendrum is indoor how often would you water it (in soil and bark}

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If indoor you would water this about twice a week in bark/soil and perhaps once a week in complete sphagnum. This orchid needs to have a little dry time in between before watering again. I hope this helps.

    • @gloriastellaarita5175

      One more question Maria, do you mist the epidendrum every day like you do with the Vandas and how often do you water the momma of the mommas?

    Hi Maria. Thanks for the video. I just got an epidendrum a few weeks ago but I have it mounted on a piece of wood. Is that okay? Should I put it in soil, in bark mix, or leave it mounted? Secondly, I got an aranchis orchid. The roots are bare and I just hung it in a small basket. Should I put that in bark mix? Looking forward to your response. Thank you.

      Sheryl Ellis this will grow in and on just about anything....the problem is finding a place that is suitable on the which it grows....this will grow very long and lanky and can become massive rather quickly...so make sure wherever it grows it can support its growth habit Best of luck and I hope it does extremely well for you! Keep me posted and HAPPY GROWING! :)

    I need the seeds. How can I purchase seeds of radican?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure where you can purchase them...but be cautious when you do see orchid seeds advertised online such as eBay and other online orchid resources as many times they are not actually orchid seeds. I will tell you that growing orchids from seeds can be quite a strenuous and lengthy process. Your average growers are not capable of this as you will need certain chemicals, sterilized condition and processes including flasking. So please do your research before purchasing seeds so that you will know what you are getting into and even if that is something that you are interested in doing. Best wishes and thanks for watching! HAPPY GROWING!

      Hello I think its a light issue and watering thing, i water my girl every single day i was not well for two days so my girls didnt received water as usual when i restart watering it after 2 day i just skip 1 day after 1 week i noticed my dendrobium push a 1cm spike, my epidendrum pushed a spike, all my orchids are in coconut fibre so now i just skip 1 day water but my vandas receives water 2 time daily, soaking in the morning and misting at 5 p.m before sunset hope this helps you dear. Happy growing 😊

      ***** She was so small...and I somehow lost track of her....I potted her with some other radicans and then I never seen her again... :( Also many of my yellow and the orange one died out after I moved them in my garden....they seemed a lot more sensitive than my orange and red and purples ones. :(

      Troy Ling ...these plants are absolutely amazing...and will just about grow anywhere you plant them...I have some in pots...in my tree...and some growing directly out of my garden. The ones that I show in this video is partially potting soil and a bark media mix...but again these are very hardy growers and will just about grow anywhere...good luck with yours. :)

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a mixture of regular garden soil and bark mixed together. Many of these types are considered terrestrial orchids and in the wild they can grow right in the ground.
