At the 6:07 mark, across the street (in the background) is a city municipal parking lot that is therefore comparable to street parking in pricing. HPD parks their vehicles in a section of the 3rd level Tip: go down to 4th level where parking stalls are regular sized, no compact stalls. Then walk up the metal stairway to Maunakea St street level door exit (at 6:06 mark) where you'll come out directly across Sing Cheong Bakery.

The most ono char siu bao/hum bao I ever ate was from Mee Sum in the Pike Place Market Seattle. Both the baked and the steamed were like sex in a bun. No joke it was that good! That being said, I have been a failure as I have never tried the local Hawaiian style manapua's and Chinatown char siu bao's. Y'all always showcase da bes local grindz and also educate us at the same time. Love y'all. Mahalo!

Ohh I’ll have to try that place as I live in Seattle. I’ve always called it hum bao growing up here and recently been made aware that we’re the only ones who call it that. I wonder if it like in Hawaii they call it manapua we call it hum bao like a regional slang or term. I’ve curious why this is and now I think I’m starting to understand why. So interesting the history of culture. Mahalo for sharing 🤙🏽

🥰Awesome! ❤️Love manapua! Only tried it from Chun Wah Kam I believe. Good to know of these other great places that you enjoy. 👍🏼Will definitely try them the next time I visit.😊 On Guam, a local favorite, that I grew up on is a Filipino/Chinese steamed bun called Siopao, similar in size to the manapua and usually filled with savory chicken, beef, or pork, most times half a boiled egg is included in the bun. Its pretty yummy!😋

You should try the Snow Mountain Bun which is like a steamed char siu bao from Jade Dynasty. It is hard to describe but I'm pretty sure you're gonna like it. My friends own Honolulu Kitchen so I'm glad you enjoy their food as much as I do. Since you liked the custard fried manapua, you should try their bolo bao. You won't be disappointed. Personally, I feel like the Portuguese Egg Custard tarts from Honu Bakery are the best on the island. I feel like it is on Japan level. Too bad they are so hard to get!

being part Portuguese it is sad that Portuguese food has been shrunk to a few specialties: Pao Doce, Massa Souvada( sweet bread), Malassadas, Portuguese bean soup, and linguica(Portuguese sausage) and some may know Vihna D'Alhos(Portagee Adobo). Sad because it is much more than just those few dishes!

I'm with you, the baked one is better. When I first saw the steamed char siu bao in SF, I thought something was wrong with it because of the split top. Then I ate it and thought, "What is this?" It had char siu, but it had a pasty texture and too sweet. I'll take a manapua from Hawaii over most of the char siu bao up here.
BTW, you should have gotten the macadamia nut chews from Sing Cheong Yuan. IMO, way better than the peanut ones.

My favorite place I liked was char sung hut. But Yea technically it's all the same. Whether you call it a char siu bao or manapua, whether you close the top or bottom it's still the same thing. It's a bun with pork filling. Most of the places here all seal it on the bottom. Manapua came from the Hawaiian name mea'ono pua'a, which we cut short to Manapua. "delicious pork thing"😂 that's the only reason why we say manapua instead of char siu bao 😂 Only in Hawaii we make up our own slang for food..Lol which caused me to embarrass myself when we moved to the mainland.🤦🏽‍♀️ Living on the islands for all of my childhood life and only knowing "Manapua", when we moved to the mainland and was asking for manapua people would look at us like what? You want what?😳and i'd point at the "manapua" which they politely corrected me and said you mean "char siu bao"? and I'm like oh yea that 🤪🤦🏽‍♀️😂 didn't realize the actual name is char siu bao. If it's a bun filled with pork filling it's a char siu bao, manapua, keke pua'a. They're all the same. 😁We sure learned a lot when we moved here. Like also, McDonald's here don't have fruit punch or Saimin..LOL🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

The Chinese baos pinched on top are northern style (the OG). The Chinese baos with a smooth top are southern style (Cantonese). The southern Chinese emigrated to Hawaii, so that's the style of baos that became manapua. These were not invented in Hawaii. The half moon evolved from Fun Guo (粉果), or Chiu Chow dumpling (潮州粉果), which some people also call Gok Jai (角仔). A generic term for any half-moon shape dumplings (fried, baked or steamed, etc).

pork hash was called okoele's and there is one dumpling is called pepe'au [spelling maybe off] . Just some history to this hinese goods. The man who used to carry around with 2 [really] trash cans filled with goods and the course was called meonopua. the original food truck of yesteryears. We know of this man of great snacks as the manapua man.I only seen him once whn I was very young not even school age. It was years before he was replced by the manapua truck. Now there is every kind of truck. Did you know this? Thought you might like a little trip down memory lane.

Manapua is a Hawaiian "pidginized" version of the Hawaiian name "Mea Ono Pua'a" which basically just means delicious thing made of pig. Basically what char siu bau evolved into here in Hawaii as a easy lunch or snack you get cheap from the lunch trucks, which even today are still called "manapua trucks" even though sell all kinds of stuff

I like the dim sum at Yung Yee Kee. I wish they had the carts with dim sum. I don’t care for their char Siu bao. I don’t like the cracked bun. I think that Sing Cheong Yuan has the best manapua. I love their black sugar bao. They also have great bok tong gau (rice cake). I order ahead to make sure they have what I want. Chun Wah Kam has great mini manapua. You have to order ahead of time for the minis. They also have plenty flavors too.
