  • Did you know you can visit centuries old medieval buildings right in Manhattan? Join me at the Met Cloisters, a New York City museum focused on medieval art and architecture from the Romanesque and Gothic periods - roughly the 10th through 16th centuries. Most tourists in New York visit the Met Cloisters' more famous sibling - the Metropolitan Museum of Art - but this gem, tucked up in the Washington Heights neighborhood, flies a bit more under the radar. The Met Cloisters houses about 5,000 works of art, but what makes this museum special is your ability to wander in picturesque surroundings, through near thousand year old buildings that have been painstakingly moved and restructured a world away from their origins, right in the heart of modern New York City.

Lived a street from Ft. Tryon until I was 11. Damn, so long ago! For some reason, the Cloisters always scared me as a kid.

I can see how it might be a little scary when you’re a kid… it’s kind of an intimidating building!

Loved your video. Very nicely worded & put together. I'm a local lifelong NY'er & didn't even know about this place until a few days ago. I'm doing some off the beaten path stuff around the city so I'll definitely be going here Thurs as they're closed on Wednesdays. I read as a NY resident we can "pay what you wish" for admission. Also read plenty of car parking which will be needed as I'll be driving there.

Yes, they do have a “pay as you wish” option. Thanks for the compliment! I hope you enjoy your visit - it’s a really great spot that’s still under the radar. Have fun!
