    Nice work! Thanks for the tutorial.
    Another way of setting the variable would be to use the selector's "active port" output and plug that into a single variable modifier. And you could use that number on the other side to set the active port on the selector. That would even work with your solution. A selector is really useful for checking if a value is equal to a number of different integers. A single gadget that's easily maintained compared to many calculators that you need to set the values of.
    Quick tip: if you use the freeze tool to freeze the background/rain etc. then when you hover over them they won't flash white.

      Thanks Giles, great tips as always! Love the idea of using the selectors ‘active port’ output, that would save on so many variable modifiers! I’m thinking about how that could be incorporated into a multiplayer setup, now you’ve got me going!
      I’ve not used that output on the selector at all before so it’s not something I think about when I make things, but I’m going to tinker with it so i remember it for the future, loads of savings to be had!
      I always forget about that blasted freeze option, I’ll have to go through the scenes before I record and freeze stuff, that’s an awesome idea. Thanks again man.

    • @ASTERisk44946

      For some reason if I don't choose really fast then it won't let me move the selector at all???? And my imp says player is falling but i can't figure out what's falling or why idk ??? But it kinda works half way? Lol😅

    • @TAPgiles
      @TAPgiles ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ASTERisk44946 Sounds like the possessed controller sensor is falling (eg. inside a puppet, and the puppet is falling). And if a puppet falls far enough without anything it could land on below it the controller sensor will "die." Which means it'll stop working.
      I guess you're using that controller sensor to control the menu. I'd recommend using a separate controller sensor in "remote control" mode instead.

    Thank you Jimmy. This is great for me and my ambitious fighting game. I guess where I was stuck was not realizing that I still had to have the characters in the next scene. I thought there was some way to use the variable with persist in Dreams to essentially pull in JUST the characters that would be used for the match. Because I planned on having characters that will transform to stronger forms during battle that ends up being a lot of graphics thermo and I wouldn’t have much room for anything else I figured there was a way but I’m guessing not.

    Late, but you're a miracle worker! I have two huge projects I've been working on since 2020, (one is an X-Men inspired single-player RPG, the other is a quirky virtual boyfriend maker and I'm not sure if Dreams is the right platform for it TBH. We have no way for players to input text and that had been important to me. Both require characters made by the player. ) I wondered how to make player character selection like this with a nice screen. I've overwhelmed myself, but I like making sculpts too much and customization is my favorite thing in regular games. (There's 42 different colors of eyes for my female characters, for example! AHH!) I'm Silversweet85 on Dreams. Hopefully, one or both of my things will be done within the next couple years if I buckle down! Thank you again, good sir!

    Hi, thank you for you tutorial. You could maybe improve it a bit by: 1) In you character select scene, instead of duplicate 3 times your variable chip, you can connect the 'output nbr' output of the selector chip to the 'set value' input of your variable (and also connect all of the 3 output ports of that selector to the 'power on' input of the variable). 2) In your second scene, instead of using 3 "=" chips, you could use a selector and connect the output of your variable to the 'set output nbr' input of that selector. Does it make sense ? ;-)

    • @JimmyJules153
      @JimmyJules153  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sure does make sense - the 'active port' on the selector is great for that sort of stuff and i didn't really get into using it until after this tutorial. I use it all the time now! it saves a lot of gadgets, great tip my friend.

    • @shagenColorado

      Likewise, I think I am understanding and seeing how these work in the remixes. However, at the end of the video when you show the multiplayer select plus the character select were you said you are emitting characters vs. hiding and showing I am having a much harder time understanding where to start. Would love to see a break down of how you build the multiplayer and character select for the beginning of creator clash.... that is exactly what I need for the game I am working on. I am going to keep exploring the pieces parts that you have awesomely put together but would love to see more details on how to make this in the multiplayer space.
      Appreciate all your hard work! Well done

    PLEASE HELP we making a 2 player coop 3D dbz game on dreams and we did a character select screen about 7 characters BUT how do we connect the dreams? Like if we have 7 characters and 9 stages then it's 7x7x9 it's ridiculous. So we need to remix each map like 49 times then we will have more then 400 remixes in our list is too much work and take too much time and space. Is there any other way we can do it? If we put all characters in 1 dream and put the others off then they still take space so we can't do it like that. I'm frustrated any ideas ?

    • @JimmyJules153
      @JimmyJules153  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a heck of a setup, basically you’ll need to have each character in the one scene and have the ability to switch them out depending on what the player chooses at the start menu. So e.g:
      The two players choose characters 2 and 3, you’d need to activate (or possibly emit) characters 2 and 3 into your game scene and have the players take control of them. It does take troubleshooting and a fair bit of time to get working well but hopefully this helps. Lmk if you need more explanation. I know you can do it!

    • @JimmyJules153
      @JimmyJules153  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So with each of your game scenes, they’d all contain all of the characters to begin with and you could destroy the ones that aren’t chosen

  • @Werewolf914
    @Werewolf914 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this, also would the idea be similar if you made it Multiplayer? Also out of curiosity is a drop in drop out thing like the Lego games possible? Like you can switch between 2 characters, or if Player 2 joins in then leaves the puppet they were playing reverts back to a NPC that follows Player 1? Not sure exactly how I'd incorporate Multiplayer into the game I want to make but I'd have at least 2 characters at a time sometimes 3 or 4 in each level so I was wondering. (I'm going to make a Supernatural game btw)

    • @JimmyJules153
      @JimmyJules153  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s very similar if you make it multiplayer, I’ve got that exact setup in my ‘creator clash’ game. The difficult part is assigning a player number to each character, but I’ve got another vid called ‘easy multiplayer add on’ that might help with this if you’re interested :)

      Okay I'll have plenty of time till the game releases to watch a bunch of different tutorials, I was originally going to make a Zelda game first, but there's a ton of things in that game that seem hard to make, so I think I'll start with something simpler till I get used to the tools, then try and make a Zelda game.

    Thank you for this video! Is it possible to make - for example - 20 different and complex characters to select (Beat 'em up)? What about the unselected characters? Do I have to place them in the scenes outside select screen and will they take power of graphic thermo? I want to make a game with many characters to select (splitted on two select screens) and than take the selected characters in different levels. What is the best way to do this and how can I save graphic thermo? Hope you have time to answere.

    • @JimmyJules153
      @JimmyJules153  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great questions! You could do a 20 character select, but it’d be quite expensive as you do need a copy of every character in the scene that they could potentially appear in, so yes they will take up your graphics thermo they’d have to be simple characters.
      This would be the way to do it as cheaply as possible as far as I know, as this method destroys the unused characters and frees the gameplay thermometer back up during play mode
