Hi Marla! I just figured out why you stand out so much from other pastel artists’. You are very gestural in your paintings and that’s so very appealing plus and it’s a big plus! Your paintings always have that special sparkle. It’s so beautiful and special how you have mastered Colors! I love your work! I’ve loved it for a few years now but it just dawned on me why. :-)
People tell me I paint fast. They should watch you do 3 paintings in lightening speed with such accuracy and color harmony. You are inspirational. I never watch you live but I enjoy being able to watch whenever I get time. Thank you Marla.
I watch you later than the live streams... I generally mute the sound because the questions and answers unrelated to what you are painting are distracting. I do love your loose style and try to learn that kind of mark making.
Hello, I'm Brazilian and I live in Sao Paulo. I am an art lover, and I have seen your videos, which inspire me a lot. I recently bought some new pastels, and I will test soon, following your tips.
This was a great demo Marla. Really inspiring, especially seeing you bring that marsh to life, making it your own. A perfect demo to watch while I am doing the Mark Making workshop too! Thanks, Amanda
I have the same turquoise bracelet Marla. I love it too! I love the second painting of the marsh. What you did with it was so beautiful in contrast to the photo. And I love the lavender!
Missed the livestream today, but I'm catching up now! Thank you so much. I love watercolor as well and I'm really enjoying your Watercolor Sketching course :)
43:32 all the years you've been painting and you still had to refer to the reference photo...look at the painting and determine where to put the lights from what you have already...you already had the scene finished and where the light was coming from...you should not have had to refer to the photo.. Use your imagination...knowing the composition and what's the goal....this is why so many artists works don't stand out and aren't unique... This represents an artist who knows all the basic fundamentals of painting...yes...looks good...but...it doesn't stand out...because it's just a copying of the reference photo painted by someone who has many years of experience...that's all. If you took that photo and used it for an idea of what the anatomy of the trees look like...or any natural anatomic element ...using the reference for that purpose...then create the composition using imagination.... Color mixing and the composition is what makes that ONE painting stand out. You can have 10 people paint that very same reference...doing exactly what you've done...copying the entire sketch... All of the final paintings will look different....only one will stand out...the one where the artist put color in their own...and how it was mixed.
I missed the first one so am just watching. THE SPEED!!! And you always paint fast. Good grief. And refering to your comment that you're old!!!! Naaaaaah you're so not. It's in the mind. I am 75 getting on for 40 !!
You are a wonderful teacher, you can tell you love what you do!
Thanks

Thank you for another great demo. I loved seeing you work at your natural speed. You were dancing across the paper, the Ginger Rogers of soft pastel!

Marla,
WOW on the marsh, I love how you transformed the drab picture into something absolutely beautiful!

Wonderful picture. I just love your calligraphy, so bold and direct.

I suppose you didn’t really look at the finished piece or hear why I look at the reference. I appreciate that you watched though.
Joy, your comment was rude and uncalled for.
