  • This is the NUX Horseman OD overdrive pedal!
    The Horseman is NUX’s take on the legendary Klon Centaur overdrive, originals of which have been played by the likes of John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa and catch fetch up to $5,000 (yes, you read that right - five thousand dollars!) on the used market. Well, for the price of one of those you could put together a stable of 70 Horsemen, if you so wished! It’s about €50 in Europe, and $70 in the USA.
    Get the Horseman here: bit.ly/NUXHorsemanRWM
    The reason so many guitar players love the Centaur/Horseman design is because it produces (cliché alert) transparent overdrive - in that it pushes our tone into overdrive without coloring the tonal characteristic of our guitar and amp. Lovely. That’s why so many companies make their own so-called Klone pedals.
    The Horseman offers us two distinct sound modes - Gold and Silver, both of which are modeled after original Klon designs - in a mini pedal format. Small enough to fit on any board, and pretty rugged and solid feeling, the pedal has just three controls (Output, Gain, and Treble). You toggle between the Gold and Silver modes by holding down the footswitch for a second or so, with an LED to indicate which mode is engaged. The pedal also allegedly offers true bypass and buffered bypass modes (the original Klons feature a legendary buffer which is said to improve your tone even when the pedal is not switched on!) although I couldn’t get this feature to work, sadly.
    In the playing part of the video, I test out the Horseman with three of my guitars - my Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster, and my Epiphone Les Paul - in a range of my favorite musical styles to see how it handles the different guitars and pickup types, and at the end, I do a nice little loop with each guitar where I tweak the pedal’s controls to show you all the extremes you can get with it.

    My setup was as follows: I ran the Horseman straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my TC Electronic Ditto Looper to play the loops.

    Really enjoying your channel so far, man. I dig how detailed this review is. I’m more of a Tele/LP guy, but I thought the pedal really worked its magic best with the Strat, particularly the bridge pickup. Interesting.
    NUX are doing some interesting stuff. I recently picked up their acoustic sim pedal, and found it surprisingly useful thus far.

      Thanks a lot, I'm really happy you're enjoying it still! I do like to go into detail in these videos. Leave no question unanswered, that's my motto ;) I actually agree about the Strat (and I'm a Tele/LP guy too!)... it really loves this pedal. There are a few more NUX pedals I'd like to try, actually - they seem to be making some really cool (and also original!) designs.

      Hey from Germany! Yep, I have and really like the Steel Singer too. Great performing pedals at a pretty amazing price, they are. They actually have a couple of new double overdrive pedals out which I'd really like to try too - the Fireman and the Ace Of Tone...

    Just got this pedal today and I absolutely love it.
    It's sitting before my Tube Screamer TS9 and I'm considering getting a second one to use solely in Silver Mode, gain up higher, having three "stages" of drive between these two and my TS9.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy new pedal day! I love the Horseman, and it does stack amazingly with Tube Screamers (and all my other drives!). At this price, it could definitely be worth getting a second one too - the Gold and Silver modes are significantly different enough to justify that for sure! That'll be a mighty triple gain stage you have there too!

  • @ThierryLacan

    Switching between true bypass and buffered bypass, work for me. Just hold (don't release) the switch, then power up. Buffer mode light green, true bypass light red. Each time you repeat the operation, it changes alternately from green to red and red to green.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, I've tried it the way you've said it and it just doesn't do anything. I'm in True Bypass mode all the time. So it might not be me... maybe this one pedal just won't do the switching?

  • @PipeOPhile
    @PipeOPhile 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Possible video suggestion: what I would like to see is maybe comparison with some other boost/overdrive pedals you own, to showcase what is it that makes this a "Klon" clone. As a total and absolute pedal noob I don't really understand differences between overdrive/boost/pedals in general, let a lone what differentiates a "Klon" effect from a Tube Screamer or Boss Blues Driver BD-2.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an excellent idea. You know, sometimes I kind of forget that there might be people watching who aren't 100% familiar with all the terms and gear types I talk about! That would be a really interesting video to make, so I'll get to planning something. In the meantime, let me offer you this - JHS have done a really nice video on pretty much that topic, and I'd really recommend it: th-cam.com/video/8wVShbGe4pk/w-d-xo.html

    Strat, strat, strat, whatever the pedal!! great demo man! It's a good alternative to a TS on blues. gold version is better for me but the pedal provides a really wide range of tones. Yes, it's planned to join soon my pedalboard.

    I have not tried horseman, but I can share my experience with Wampler Tumnus deluxe. It did magic with either humbucker or P90 or star with a mid-scoppish Bugera V22 that I had. It, however was a bit muffled on a Laney Lionheart that has quite a bit of mids, and on Peavey Classic for the same reason: mids
    Klon and clones of it have a mid hump, wampler tumnus did wonders with mid-scoopish amps, but choked a bit with with middy amps

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really interesting comment, so thanks for sharing that. I've been really interested to try a Tumnus Deluxe because it has the 3-band EQ, so I was wondering how you could tailor it to different sounding amps and setups. I generally have a fair bit of mids in my amp sound though, so maybe it's not quite going to be ideal? It's definitely something I would love the chance to try out!

    • @brucemarie3059
      @brucemarie3059 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RichWordsMusic depends on the amp I guess. Deluxe lets you cut the mids a bit but, for me, It was a perfect match to Bugera v22 -- beautiful sounds they had together. it did well after a big muff as well on that Bugera. On laney lionheart, I could use others pedals with sounds more pleasing to me
      I think Klon has a humb around 800-1000 hz, but I may be mistaken
