  • Today i am showing the Weeping Willow tree, Salix babylonica, cuttings in my pond i use to soak up excess nutrients. Salix babylonica (Babylon willow or weeping willow; Chinese: 垂柳) is a species of willow native to dry areas of northern China, but cultivated for millennia elsewhere in Asia, being traded along the Silk Road to southwest Asia and Europe. Willows all have abundant watery bark sap, which is heavily charged with salicylic acid, soft, usually pliant, tough wood, slender branches, and large, fibrous, often stoloniferous roots. The roots are remarkable for their toughness, size, and tenacity to live, and roots readily sprout from aerial parts of the plant.
The leaves are typically elongated, but may also be round to oval, frequently with serrated edges. Most species are deciduous; semievergreen willows with coriaceous leaves are rare, e.g. Salix micans and S. australior in the eastern Mediterranean. All the buds are lateral; no absolutely terminal bud is ever formed. The buds are covered by a single scale. Usually, the bud scale is fused into a cap-like shape, but in some species it wraps around and the edges overlap. The leaves are simple, feather-veined, and typically linear-lanceolate. Usually they are serrate, rounded at base, acute or acuminate. The leaf petioles are short, the stipules often very conspicuous, resembling tiny, round leaves, and sometimes remaining for half the summer. On some species, however, they are small, inconspicuous, and caducous (soon falling). In color, the leaves show a great variety of greens, ranging from yellowish to bluish color. Almost all willows take root very readily from cuttings or where broken branches lie on the ground. The few exceptions include the goat willow (Salix caprea) and peachleaf willow (Salix amygdaloides). One famous example of such growth from cuttings involves the poet Alexander Pope, who begged a twig from a parcel tied with twigs sent from Spain to Lady Suffolk. This twig was planted and throve, and legend has it that all of England's weeping willows are descended from this first one.

Salicylic acid is whats in the willow tree , but aspirin is slightly different... its acetyl salicyic acid. Salicylic acid can cause GI irritation on high levels and is not nearly as effective. It's safe to use willow bark, for sure, but it's not a direct replacement.

God bless you I so so needed this. My son recently passed away. I've struggled to get back to working in my garden. My grass was waist high but finally my neighbor helped me trim it down. I went out back to find a tree which I think is this willow, in a wet area of my yard such I never planted trees there. I've several maples also. I'm researching to find what they all are but I think it is this. I weep to go home also. This brings me such comfort, my garden is my sanctuary and sabbatical with God, now even more so. I'll always think of this now, maybe instill a plaque with the verse. How perfect. We both hate the city life as babylon as well. I left but he couldn't. He's in the hands of God now. May God have mercy on our souls. Thank you so much my friend. God bless and keep you! 🙏😔🕯️📖🛐✝️

However, my property is sandy and mostly pine trees. I rent, though, so I'm trying to keep this guy going in a container until I get my own, less sandy property! Moving it into an even larger container next week...

I have major flooding from a blighted road above my yard. The storm drain is completely clogged and rain enters the fissures in the road up there and channels it all to my back yard. Finally that road and my back yard sank and the houses on the other side of that road collapsed. I been complaining to the borough and they blame the overlooking township who blames my borough. I’m not getting anywhere. A weeping willow is the only thing I can think of that can protect the foundation to my house. I can’t dig because who knows what Could give way up the hill if I start digging. If I plant one though...the only problem is I will either have to remove a huge pine tree or hope that when the weeping willlow grows, it won’t be so big that its canopy won’t push over my pine tree.
I understand I have to keep the tree back away from gas, water, and sewer lines because of the root system, but how far from other trees can I plant it?
Are there any less massive varieties of weeping willow (not Pussy willow, that’s way too small and I think they are unattractive).
