  • This WiFi connected smart garage opener is one of the best and most affordable upgrades I've made to our home, and something I use multiple times a day. Given most of my bikes are kept in the garage, and this saves me from carrying keys/remotes on my rides, this definitely qualifies as something I've wanted to review on here for a while now.

After watching your video, I lashed out & got one of these babies. Brilliant. Now there’s no drama getting back in to our garage if I forget to pack the remote. And one less thing to take when I go out on the road. Swapped the plug to one wth built in USB charging port so it’s a nice clean install. Thanks for sharing this.

When we bought our house 5 years ago I added the MyQ pieces to my Garage door.
It's been so useful, especially since I cycle commute and I enter and leave via the garage.
It's also very useful to be able to open the garage door for someone who might need to pick something up from the garage or drop it in the garage.

I have had this about a year too and love it. Actually the best bit is the integration with Apple car play. When I am approaching my house my car display shows me a button to press to open the garage. Don’t even have a key fob on my car any more. Thanks always Shane for your awesome work. Hope to see you at the TDU in Jan.

I got the "Orion Grid Connect Smart Garage Door Controller With Sensor" from Bunnings about 6 months ago, tis awesome. So much less hassle not needing keys and clicker on a ride. Saved me the hassle of getting house keys cut for the kids too, they just setup the phone app and they're all set.

Got this after Shane's fb post a few weeks ago and love it! As someone who has lost a garage door remote after a ride (forgot to take it out of the jersey pocket, went straight into the washing machine) this is👌 The pin code everytime you want to open the garage on my Android a bit annoying though. Cheers Shane!

I’ve got the same setup! My experiences using it for over a year are identical also. Absolutely brilliant. If only there was Apple home integration on my garmin head unit or watch… opening the garage from my wrist would be one of the very few additional features I’d actually use on an Apple Watch. Whipping out the phone as I roll into my street isn’t so bad though!

Worth mentioning that this type of functionality is built into many modern garage door openers or as an accessory, albeit at a very nasty upcharge. My garage door opener company wanted ~$200 for the device plus a monthly subscription fee. I bought the Meross instead, only spent about 30 bucks and I've been a happy camper for more than a year now

Recently replaced a 24 year old chain driven unit with a belt drive Chamberlain MyQ compatible garage door opener. No need to lubricate the belt. Has WiFi and bluetooth. iOS app to open and close. Notifies you when garage door has been opened or closed (by anyone). Nothing extra to install. Has wireless keypad too. I hope this still works when internet and WiFi is down.

Because of your Insta story on this originally bought the same thing. It's been great when paired with a Google camera to check if we've left the garage open or not.
My only issue is when leaving the house when the phone loses wifi. The app doesn't immediately work and I have to wait for it to fully change over to 4G before it will allow me to close the door.

Does this support Apple geofence automations? I’ve been using a Chamberlain hub for my two Liftmaster garage door openers for about 5 years and the geofencing used to work but lately doesn’t. I think Chamberlain has disabled something on their end as all of my other “arrive home” automations are still working. Wondering if this would work instead.

@@gplama there is a version that doesn't work with apple (it's slightly cheaper ~$20) I have two of them installed (I am on an android platform)
I am referencing to the Linux based platform called 'Home Assistant ' that runs home automation services in an on site server independent of the internet or other 3rd party's and their potential charges.

The hitch I'm having with this is that your phone needs to be unlocked. If I'm rolling up on my motorcycle, with gloves on, I want to say "Hey Siri, open garage" without having to unlock my phone. Is that possible? If I go through Hey Google or anything else would it work? If not, then it's not much better than just using the keypad outside the garage.

Stand a few feet off the ground on a smart bike, people point out the risks. (Not to deny there is a risk, it’s interesting to see it judged differently based on the context)
