Smart Garage Opener // Leave Your Keys and Clicker at Home!

- This WiFi connected smart garage opener is one of the best and most affordable upgrades I've made to our home, and something I use multiple times a day. Given most of my bikes are kept in the garage, and this saves me from carrying keys/remotes on my rides, this definitely qualifies as something I've wanted to review on here for a while now.

After watching your video, I lashed out & got one of these babies. Brilliant. Now there’s no drama getting back in to our garage if I forget to pack the remote. And one less thing to take when I go out on the road. Swapped the plug to one wth built in USB charging port so it’s a nice clean install. Thanks for sharing this.
My advise is to invest in a step ladder however I was impressed by your balance
When we bought our house 5 years ago I added the MyQ pieces to my Garage door.
It's been so useful, especially since I cycle commute and I enter and leave via the garage.
It's also very useful to be able to open the garage door for someone who might need to pick something up from the garage or drop it in the garage.
I have had this about a year too and love it. Actually the best bit is the integration with Apple car play. When I am approaching my house my car display shows me a button to press to open the garage. Don’t even have a key fob on my car any more. Thanks always Shane for your awesome work. Hope to see you at the TDU in Jan.
Great use of the Tacx NEO Bike 😂 Is that from an upcoming series, Dodgy Quick Tips and Hacks?
I have one, different brand but same functionality, I absolutely love it.
Will be doing it at the new house we are building for sure. Can't do at the current house, as WiFi signal is non-existent at the old house (garage location). Cheers
Oh, love the ultra safe access platform used ... 😛
I got the "Orion Grid Connect Smart Garage Door Controller With Sensor" from Bunnings about 6 months ago, tis awesome. So much less hassle not needing keys and clicker on a ride. Saved me the hassle of getting house keys cut for the kids too, they just setup the phone app and they're all set.
Got this after Shane's fb post a few weeks ago and love it! As someone who has lost a garage door remote after a ride (forgot to take it out of the jersey pocket, went straight into the washing machine) this is👌 The pin code everytime you want to open the garage on my Android a bit annoying though. Cheers Shane!
I’ve got the same setup! My experiences using it for over a year are identical also. Absolutely brilliant. If only there was Apple home integration on my garmin head unit or watch… opening the garage from my wrist would be one of the very few additional features I’d actually use on an Apple Watch. Whipping out the phone as I roll into my street isn’t so bad though!
I’ve bought one after your recomendation! Love it!
have the same one, love it. only thing to be careful of is making sure the door sense magnets are close together. the closer the better to avoid obstruction alerts.
That's awesome! I've just invested in a decent garage door, but was wondering about the clicker and cycling! Amazingly my garage door is compatible 😁
Thanks, Shane! I've got a lot of other devices in the house but haven't added the wifi garage door opener. Have the old-school keypad and remotes but this would add a nice level of control and remote statusing.
I’ve got a Bluetooth opener which is good, but the added functionality of this really good.
Worth mentioning that this type of functionality is built into many modern garage door openers or as an accessory, albeit at a very nasty upcharge. My garage door opener company wanted ~$200 for the device plus a monthly subscription fee. I bought the Meross instead, only spent about 30 bucks and I've been a happy camper for more than a year now
Recently replaced a 24 year old chain driven unit with a belt drive Chamberlain MyQ compatible garage door opener. No need to lubricate the belt. Has WiFi and bluetooth. iOS app to open and close. Notifies you when garage door has been opened or closed (by anyone). Nothing extra to install. Has wireless keypad too. I hope this still works when internet and WiFi is down.
Very interesting idea 💡
I have a smart garage door opener MyQ. Got when my old opener died. VERY helpful.
The minute I saw your "ladder," I knew you used to work in IT.
I love the concept, but I need a garage first 😜
Been looking at doing this for a few months now; guess I have a Christmas project ;)
HomeKit users, you can setup a Homebridge dummy switch to open the garage door automatically when you arrive home. No interaction necessary. Pretty nice particularly when the weather is bad.
Branching out into smart home! I have the same opener, great for leaving the keys at home. You could also use a 20 quid smart relay as most garage doors just need a momentary switch
A Sonoff smart relay/trigger circuit board costs less than 5....
@@nnnnn8173 depends where you are. I got a back of 4 for £60 and that was a steal here
Installation complete!
Be sure to order the MSG100HK! There is a version without the HomeKit compatibility.
Let’s see how this changes my rides. No more keys or garage opener needed sound great!
Because of your Insta story on this originally bought the same thing. It's been great when paired with a Google camera to check if we've left the garage open or not.
My only issue is when leaving the house when the phone loses wifi. The app doesn't immediately work and I have to wait for it to fully change over to 4G before it will allow me to close the door.
The Genie Aladdin Connect wifi retro-fit kit is a good option that connects to the existing opener on the wall.
Nice use of the Tacx Neo
Tacx Neo Ladder. Multipurpose smart bike.

Who has got a garage? What a luxury!
It's only for housing push bikes not Porsche collections, so there's that. 🤷🏻♂️🤣
I have the CHAMBERLAIN Smart Garage Control - Wireless Garage Hub and Sensor with Wifi & Bluetooth. Works well and was easy to install. But does not work with Google Home....It was only $25 though.
Has the door not got a safety edge, so that if something (a child or a box) is in the way it'll auto retract?
Does this support Apple geofence automations? I’ve been using a Chamberlain hub for my two Liftmaster garage door openers for about 5 years and the geofencing used to work but lately doesn’t. I think Chamberlain has disabled something on their end as all of my other “arrive home” automations are still working. Wondering if this would work instead.
Great device I like my one. No native integration with home assistant though.
Is is the Meross without Home Kit? (Tip for anyone researching, the models the HK at the end are the Home Kit enabled ones)
@@gplama there is a version that doesn't work with apple (it's slightly cheaper ~$20) I have two of them installed (I am on an android platform)
I am referencing to the Linux based platform called 'Home Assistant ' that runs home automation services in an on site server independent of the internet or other 3rd party's and their potential charges.
I *THINK* I have found a work around but it's a bodge and would be better if meross enabled it natively.
None the less they are a great unit if a little slow to respond at times.
I believe you need a matter hub to make this work if you are outside your home WiFi network and to share with others. Didn’t hear this mentioned during the video.
Good point. It’s in the details over on their website. Ref: support.apple.com/en-au/HT207057
Appears to work with Amazon Alexa as well?
Just be aware there are 2 versions - one that is HomeKit compatible (together with Google / Amazon) and then one that is not (but still compatible with Google / Amazon). They are almost the same price at least in the UK. No idea why they sell two versions - was a pain when I decided to move to Apple away from Google and the version I had wont work!
HK is the version that's HomeKit compatible. That's the one I've linked to.
I want my Siri to have an Australian accent!
Has the ladder been lama lab tested recently with latest firmware?
Interestingly enough on the Neo Bike firmware front - Garmin released an updated firmware for Neo Bike Plus addressing a number of issues I'd reported in the initial review the very day I sent the bike back. It simply wasn't ready when released. It's a good ladder though.
quesiton - can this device work in parrael with the an on wall wired door open/close switch ?
I can’t see why not.
it would seem that you would need to splice the wires from the walled switch with the smart switch, since the garage door opener only has a single input for a controller.
The hitch I'm having with this is that your phone needs to be unlocked. If I'm rolling up on my motorcycle, with gloves on, I want to say "Hey Siri, open garage" without having to unlock my phone. Is that possible? If I go through Hey Google or anything else would it work? If not, then it's not much better than just using the keypad outside the garage.
Do you have to use Siri with Apple or can you just use a smartphone?
I’ll just stick to my $25 MyQ setup
@gplama do your existing garage remotes still work with this installed?
Yes
Thanks Shane 👍🏻 this will be a great upgrade to my Merlin opener…ask Siri if the door is closed instead of constantly wondering about it, or turning around to check 😂
I have the same setup and have had nothing but problem after problem. Today I cannot operate the garage control via my iWatch series 8 but can do via Siri on my Iphone 12 for some reason and my car play button no longer works either. So frustrating.
What is your HomeKit hub? AppleTV?
GP , does the app limit the number of users? Thx!
I've only logged into my account with the Meross app. Mrs Lama uses the Apple Home setup for open/close/notifications.
Disappointed as I thought this was an announcement of Zwift garage improvements 😀
Hey GPlama, I have the same model of your garage and I connected the wires in similar manner but it does not seem to open or close the door. It recognises the sensors and it sends notifications to the phone for opening and closing. 😢
Does shorting the two connectors on the opener work? That’s all the opener is doing.
@@gplama managed to get it to work! FINALLY!
Just wondering how did you get Siri to stop asking to ‘unlock iPhone first’? I don’t have Apple Watch 🙏
Do you know if it works with Starlink? I have a MyQ smart garage door opener and it’s been useless since I switched to Starlink Internet.
Why would it be any different? As long as there is internet access it should work. Sounds like your MyQ might need to be reconfigured for the new router.
@@ChrisP978 I’ve tried, but my MyQ won’t work on Starlink’s 5GHz band. I enabled both 5GHz and 2.4GHz on my Starlink router, but MyQ still won’t recognize it. I contacted MyQ and they simply told me that it was a known issue.
After you get Astro you won't have to worry about leaving the door up or down
But does it work with home assistant?
It should.... something I haven't tinkered with yet.
It's a great alternative if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, and don't want to feed your life through the big brothers
No ladder?
No need when I have a smart bike right there. 😄
Given this video is monetised, and TH-cam forms a substantial part of your job, I'm not sure you'd want Work Cover to see that particular use of a Tacx NEO 🤣🤣
(Comment for the Australian viewers - the rest of the world may not get this reference)
Yet trainers that have improperly earthed power supplies are just fine? 😂
I'm a good 10 years older than you Shane. Beyond the normal clicker this is all witchcraft, go for a 50 km ride and if you can open your garage door manually do another 50k!🤣🤣
My garage is detached from my house.
I just use an external key pad.........
Wifi openers are great until you forget you phone 😮
Then how did you close the garage?
@@gplama good question. guess that means you’ll never get that notification.
Stop costing me money :)
dude - OH&S - Use a ladder
The Neo Bike is a perfectly good ladder! 😅
@@gplamauntil you do a molly (fall off)
It’s an interesting one. Riding out the roads with trucks, hitting almost 80kmh on the gravel bike, riding sketchy trails, all fine. Stand a few feet off the ground on a smart bike, people point out the risks. (Not to deny there is a risk, it’s interesting to see it judged differently based on the context)
