Set 9 was so fun man, i remember the day i found trch noone else knew. Of you took pengu and hardforced piltover every single game you could go guaranteed 1st after 7 losses. What proceeded was me going 1st 14 times and averaging a 1.8 climbing 800 lp from 0 lp master to mid challenger Best set honestly
I find it really funny that Ryze's Noxus spell basically never got changed outside of some quality of life changes over the course of this set because nobody wanted to play any of the incredibly boring Noxus portals
@@olivergro7105 if you mean in general, 18:25 explains it pretty well. If you mean Noxian Ryze specifically, his spell is the exact same as Set 12 Milio: does some damage, grants items to allies, and if he can't grant items, gives a damage buff instead.
If I remember correctly they moved a portal to be a noxus one (portal stayed the exact same, just under a different "logo"). It dropped the portal pickrate
I did start TFT with sets 2, 7 and then 8 but really started playing the game with my ex girlfriend during set 9. I remember having so much fun, playing Aphelios with infinite attack speed, praying for ksanté to push out of the board the good units, not succeding with the rerolls because I was new to the game, looking at my Ahri 2** just one shoting all the board ; all of this without any third party apps... Such great memories, thank you for the video
17:58 iirc, turret was always 2 shrink + burn because it was insane utility. Gold was only picked if you got heimer early and you had items for him, otherwise it was never clicked. Repair was also situational, only if you lacked frontline
Yeah I mean heimer was really flexible, I just thought it was funny to say everyone always picked gold because every clip I used pretty much only had it
i think you got it exactly right, Set 9 was super experimentative and Legends were incredibly enabling, both good and bad. retrospectively, set 9 was great, but in the moment standout issues were super oppressive but i have fond memories of this set, perma casting jinx, runaan's akshan and RFC yasuo and so on set 9 was cool, hopefully we go back to runeterra soon
I was such a big fan of the Taric/Silco comp in 9.5, and then Neeko/Taric/Silco reroll comp after the Taric nerfs. Having unkillable frontline was just so fun to watch.
My man! That was the one comp I still think back about. Me and my friend spammed double up ranks with me forcing that almost every game and it was just such a nuts setup to go for. Silco damaging everyone and then using the damage to heal Taric while he tanked every enemy was great.
ah, my favorite set... i still remember fondly being new to tft ( or new at taking it seriously enough ?) and playing ionia/shadow isles because they're my favorite regions on the lore, without realizing they were... slightly not balanced! maybe that's what got me hooked on to the game, thinking i was re-discovering the wheel or something. amazing video as always!
Glad I stumbled into this video. Pretty sure Set 9 was the last time I played TFT regularly. I had fun with the set, love the return to OG League aesthetics, but I had trouble being consistent, probably due to the added layers of strategy brought in by the new mechanics. Set 3 wasn't perfect but it was my favorite Set early on. The board effects weren't always fun or good, but I have 3 or 4 comps I like to play and I can pivot into any of them depending on how my game goes. For me, the added layer of RNG in set 9 made it harder for me to recognize which team comps to play. Been itching to play TFT again so hopefully the current set is better for me.
I think one of the things that marked the set was kinda the rise and fall of the "Johnny" playstyle, which is basically players like LeDuck that try to push the game mechanics to its limits only for Riot to gut it. Selling 4-Star yordles for 56 gold? Gone. Zephyr spam? Gone. Exoskeleton Sion? Gone. Negative values? Gone. Hell, even stuff like triple Deathcap Aatrox isn't possible anymore because Dcap gives Damage Amp instead of raw AP. And on a more personal note, I feel like the Piltover rework was by far one of the biggest non-legend failures of the set. It just made the trait awful to use, before you could decide between selling the T. hex for loot or have it on your Piltover Gunners comp but with the rework you got a chicken disguised as a T. rex and pocket change as loot, you were kinda forced to play Piltover Gunners unlike old Piltover that let you pivot to boards like 3 star 4 cost spam (I loved Piltover into Strategists pivot so much...) or your average legend spam Remember when Ekko was bugged the entire set? If his target died he would cast on himself...
ngl I think Piltover before the rework was absolutely the most atrocious trait of all time, much less econ trait. The dragon was cool but we never should be in a place where you never wanted to cash out the fortune trait because you'd die due to having a shitty board so I can't agree with this lol.
21:15 Nice video and yeah completely agree. People tend to forget that there will always be a meta, there will always be stronger units, items, traits, augments and whatnot. That's natural, and that's why we get biweekly patches (even weekly sometimes). Sadly, internet culture is why strong stuff gets exploited as soon as 1 popular player discovers it, we just gotta live with that (also friendly reminder to not blame the devs they're doing their best)
One of my favorite sets as a not really competetive player. going "hm wait with TF I can spam xxx item!" into "wait this stupid thing i thought about is actually kinda meta now!" was so fun. double taliyah, double graves etc where just things I had basically NEVER seen in TFT before outside of the double trouble augment. Dragon King going "meh idc what happens" was hilarious, Set 9 will be remembered by me as a set that took the "usual" rules of TFT on how comps work, how leveling and winning works and just YEET them out the window. To this day I try to check new Set releases to see if something like double taliyah might be if not meta or even good but atleast playable.
Set9 is my personal favorite. With friend on duble up we tried so many combinations of legends to optimize them for double ups. Golden time of tft. So many comps, so many ways to flex plays.
I wonder how this set would have been without legends....I can't believe i'm thinking this, but i miss this set after playing the recent ones...this game went down so bad.
This is the shittiest set of all time if you weren't playing casually. Even the lows of set 11 can't beat this. That being said set prob is MUCH better w/o legends and portals
My most precious memory from this set is playing the 3 prismatic augments portal, and getting 3 star aatrox right after selling my whole piltover board.
Set 9 had some incredible peaks and lows and that’s how I remember it. My favourite thing to play was Lux zephyrs. I made an account to rank up just playing that single comp. 9.5 was when it really went downhill and trying to cook comps and try things didn’t work because people got really good at forcing the best meta comp.
I miss the legends so much, I am a casual player and I loved picking urf every game regardless of the meta & trying to build a vertical comp around whatever wonky emblem it gave me
I loved legends because of the freedom of playstyle. Even before the game you knew exactly what you are going for. The bag sizes were also a lot bigger and hitting your units even contested was possible. It throw out a lot of RNG from the game which i LOVED.
I think this set is the one that sets the boundary between fun setand competitive set I remember only playing tahm kench and always hitting 3 star legendary it was so fun
I get that its hard to divorce legends and their problems from set 9. But set 9.0 is my favorite set for sure. Its one of few sets that I felt no matter what comp I played I was having fun. There were absolutely balance problems but everything comp was fun. 9.5 felt a lot worse though lol
set 9 was so fun it made me switch to summoners after set 9.5. but cant believe the vladimir aug with 6 bastion aphelios wasnt mentioned here cause i literally beat a 7 demacia with bis 3star lux without even having a 3 star myself
Legends were something I was very hyped for up until I played my first game. Took A Sol because forcing level 10 before it was a base mechanic sounded hilarious, ended up also getting a gold augment, and proceeded to hit Senna 3 star on accident when I was two levels ahead of the entire lobby. After that it just became The Draven Show, and playing anything else was a waste of time until they nerfed Spoils to not print you six items during an average game lmao
Unironically, I hit my highest rank ever in 5 years of playing TFT (Gold III) going against the meta and maining Caitlyn Void, lol. With how Void was set up, it basically let me get a massive head start in contesting anyone else who wanted to play void and keep a solid combat lead. I probably could have gotten a bit higher in my climb but got bored of playing the exact same comp every time, lmao.
definitely my favorite set, got D1 in set 9 and then master in 9,5, only ever played urf and flexed around the spatulas i got. demacia/slayer, noxus/shurima/challanger, zaun/gunner, bilgewater/strategist, and bruiser/void. i will forever be a "fast 9" hater and 5 cost flex boards.
Something that should have also been mentioned. They removed stats from third party sites for a bit until eventually people were making their own api for stats and stuff, like a black market for stats and legends stats. I think that’s also why 9.5 suffered so much, the stats basically meant everyone caught onto the best meta comp of the patch and picked the legend to make it happen.
I'm pretty sure they didn't introduce the legend stat thing until the start of 9.5, that's why I didn't mention it, I even had a clip of Mort breaking it down to emphasise my point at the end
Tahm was my go to, if you got the prismatic gold augment early, you would just have so much gold to earlier level up, get 3stars, or champ block other people, making a 3 star of a unit I dont even need and watching them flame me in chat was peak.
I started tft in set 8.5, but I still consider that set 9 and 9.5 were the ones that made me progress the most, and I think that since I played the game set 9 was my fav. Playing those traits or reroll comps was maybe the funniest gameplay I had in tft, I remember playing things like shadow isles + targon, frejlord + ionia... And at the contrary, I don't remember feeling mad about being defeated by any comp, while in this set for example I get 25 mental issues for every single tactician's HP I lose from broken 2 cost reroll compts (Ahri, syndra, kassadin...) Also, from what I remember, set 9.5 was actually again more controversed than set 9 was, with things like vanquisher, rfc abusers (nilah or mordekaiser) helped by tf legend, the patch that made multicaster (I'm not sure of the name, the taliyah and sona's trait) completely broken, and the fact that every single game 4 players got anormally lucky and sometimes everyone of them had a prismatic trait or a 3* 4 cost... Anyway, I think set 9 will always be in my heart, even if it had some problems.
love ur recent vids bro, just one small point: your endings feel really abrupt sometimes. maybe try a more smooth exit, in this case for example maybe dont cut it off after "this is for you to decide.", but instead add something like "thats it for this video, lmk what u think bla bla comments or here watch this other video bla bla" something like that maybe but for real i love listening to ur stories bc i only ever really started grinding tft in set 10 so these historical videos are so fun to watch for me uwu meow sending lvoe
I appreciate your feedback but there's a reason I do it, I do it because people click off as soon as they start sniffing out the ending, and ending on "it's for you to decide" is a point that will hopefully stick with people and make them thinkg, and when I was editing I actually had a whole segment more but I was like "Nah this... this is a good end, I like this." Expect set 10 to be a fucking B A N G E R btw. I love that set, I wanna do it RIGHT
There is a 4* Veigar in set 12 though. With the moonlight charm you can star up a unit of a specific cost and if you only have 3* units on board it will star up to a 4*
This was the first set I really dug my teeth into. For it's ups and downs it was a lot of fun. I really loved the first half of the set. It still stands to be the only set I got a 3* 5-cost in. Since I'm still playing into set 12, I'd say it was a success. Also, I was one of those few Caitlyn Legends players.
in set 9 the strongest reroll comp is aways muiltcaster the moment you hit at lest 3 3star muiltcaster with a 3 star tank you can fight level 9 board at level 6 or 7
that's 9.5. And even then Multicaster was an omegabait comp until it's rework because the breakpoints were bad and the units were also terrible. It just got rebuffed + units got buffed because legit it was a "hit 5 3 cost 1-3 stars (multis + a frontline tank) by mid stage 4 or die before Raptors. Because the trait + units were that weak before you 3 starred them. People hate the idea of it (mostly because of TF legend) but it was genuinely a deperately needed rework of an awful trait that just had numbers that were incredibly too high when trying to fix it.
@firewater1991 na it's a 2 to 3 cost reroll comp that need you to hit a bunch of 3 star. Like even in s9 it's still a s teir comp if you can hit the 3 star this is why they rework it in set 9.5 but in the end its still a 3 star comp. I climb with muiltcaster through set 9 , my experience is if you can hit your 2 cost carry and tank 3 star, its top 3 if you can hit velkoz 3 star it a first or second but if you don't you 8 is the problem is really if you can 3 star your carry with good item or not and level don't matter since you have so much aoe that even a level 7v 9 board as long as you have the 3 star you can still win.
Great video! But also you could ve highlight the "capped board" as you said, bcs it was a real meta for weeks. If someone got an econ aug at 2-1 you knew back then that he will go for the full legendary board w fleljords. It was so good, and it is not so common that a fast 9 full legendary board is not just playable, but it s a meta comp. You couldnt just do it in any set.
The best set for me was with LeeSin Dragomancer. I hit Emerald at this moment by spamming Lee Sin carry when noone played it cause it got "nerfed". He was still oneshooting every units since the really end of the set
i loved the units & traits in this set but i hated legends with a passion. the portals were awesome, the item changes were much needed. if the legends weren’t so broken and the focus was more on balancing the traits and units, this set would’ve been LEGENDARY. i loved karma carry, zaun trait, the 5 costs were super fun and the yordle was really fun to roll for. if demacia and piltover were more balanced and legends were removed i would’ve been so happy
Love your channel. Very excited for set 8 video, I can’t believe people hated it so much. Every game was unique. Also agree, 3 party sites have generally made TFT less fun even though I use them everyday. Especially in Set 9. I think there was so much left to be discovered based on your playstyle if the data didn’t exist.
It's funny that you mentionned TF being nerfed... But not the comp that made TF so strong it needed to be nerfed. Kayle bastion was the most force-able comp in the game, you basically needed 4 items, locket locket guinsoo guinsoo and you were stable. You could reroll kayle 3 but when the comp started to get 4 or 5 ways contested (and i mean, every single lobby had 2-4 kayle players), they realised Kayle didn't even need to be 3 star... Stable trough the game at 2star and go 9 for legendaries. Incredible comp. 10/10 would play again.
I still think Piltover was in the lower half of loss streak traits, perhaps the worst designed. Lose streak trait that gives you a unit that's straight up better than the potential cash out requiring no actual thought process of how to recover from the loss streak given the reward you got. Yeah you still had to win the one time, but that's a lot less of a hurdle than say being given 100 gold from underground and now you have to roll down and actually hit something etc. Also just much more stable unit synergy relative to others.
The set that i hate the most because riot has used there 200+ year skill in this set to make every patch there's only 1 or 2 team playable and yet to mention the soul fighter mode (don't remember name) is just a purely a rng festa since almost entire lobby rush 9 for 3* 5 cost
The Void is basicly like the One that summon bear now, at the start of the season, its busted. Then it get down to the ground that if you not get Baron you not gonna get into the top 4.
Draven was the most fun and most degenerate TFT I have ever played. Iconic moment in time that simply can't be recreated. It would have absolutely caused everyone to quit if it lasted longer than the couple days it slipped through.
@@Nomsynho no, I mean the idea of predetermined augments based on your playstyle was good... But Riot failed to balance that many legends(8 if we don't count no legend option). I think Riot could balance it better if set9 had 4-5 legends(items, exp/gold, reroll, winstreaking/lvl up, unit stats) instrad of 8.
as a casual player set 9 was my favourite set EVER idk about you but for me it was so fun especially cause in low elo people dont really FORCE stuff a lot and that made the game ten times more fun the units were sick and the comps like kayle poppy reroll which is one of my favourite comps ever to yasuo kai sa and kalista is one of the best three costs to ever bee in tft she was so cool
Honestly, if I could guarantee that the video would do well I REALLY would do it, y'know? Like I WANT bigger videos that are grander and more in depth, but sometimes these videos just don't do well(set 4.5 for example) and I have no ideas which ones will, the algorithm is a very fickle thing
that last comment about metas and third party apps was such a good analysis. It also kinda hit a nerve what I think ruins the fun of TFT. Sadly its in every game where people want to be competitive and just look at raw stats instead of actually playing what they are given just because some website or tierlist is saying it is 1.4% better than the other. At least TFT isnt a game where your teammate is flaming you because you dont have the optimal build even if it's not the optimal in this scenario :D
Yeah I think if there were a way where people didn't find out about legend stats they'd actually be so good for the game, but.... There's no way to police that, so legends will always be flawed by design
@@Nomsynho the concept was good but they were a bit too significant. It's hard to think of a solution where they arent insignificant or too imbalanced in comparison. Also people tend to just have fun but not in the way to do quirky fun but playing the strongest and following some guide or their favourite streamer. Very tricky to balance and the majority doesnt want to look through them to pick something that fits their playstyle but rather pick that is at the top or they saw in a clip and start the game. But hey I was a big fan of shadowitems, maybe I am just wrong in the head anyway haha. Anyway, love your set reviews. Keep up the great work!
I would farm on Asol and Tahm kench to rush Heimer with triple rageblade and as many Zeke’s as possible and buy triple gold turret. It was so much easier to do that and get three star five costs than any other set since
Set 9 was so so good but also so so bad. There were some of the most fun comps ever, but at the same time it was so frustrating not getting a single 5 cost because everyone was rushing lvl 10 to fill their boards and get a 3 star
When i feel like a set isnt balanced well or i think it is too random/to easy to force broken stuff i usually dont try to rank up high and play fun combs in gold.
I played poro all the way through the set (with the occasional Ornn) and I loved the set. I genuinely think set 9 had the second most impact on tft after set 6 of course. I do think legends *could* exist, just not competitively.
draven had perfect average stats because the top 4 and bot 4 were all draven
This got a chuckle from me
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be 🎉
Set 9 was also just goated thematically. Who would've thunk that using lore based traits and character skins would be so epic.
Crazy right?

Stillwater was there for the redditors that complained about augments
Nah fuck augments
Heh... I actually liked it 🥴
It was my highest win rate portal

definitely my favorite set, got D1 in set 9 and then master in 9,5, only ever played urf and flexed around the spatulas i got. demacia/slayer, noxus/shurima/challanger, zaun/gunner, bilgewater/strategist, and bruiser/void. i will forever be a "fast 9" hater and 5 cost flex boards.
And at the contrary, I don't remember feeling mad about being defeated by any comp, while in this set for example I get 25 mental issues for every single tactician's HP I lose from broken 2 cost reroll compts (Ahri, syndra, kassadin...)
Also, from what I remember, set 9.5 was actually again more controversed than set 9 was, with things like vanquisher, rfc abusers (nilah or mordekaiser) helped by tf legend, the patch that made multicaster (I'm not sure of the name, the taliyah and sona's trait) completely broken, and the fact that every single game 4 players got anormally lucky and sometimes everyone of them had a prismatic trait or a 3* 4 cost...
Anyway, I think set 9 will always be in my heart, even if it had some problems.
Draven patch was so incredibly fun actually. But I agree it was good to get hot fixed and probably would've gotten stale fast
love ur recent vids bro, just one small point: your endings feel really abrupt sometimes. maybe try a more smooth exit, in this case for example maybe dont cut it off after "this is for you to decide.", but instead add something like "thats it for this video, lmk what u think bla bla comments or here watch this other video bla bla" something like that maybe but for real i love listening to ur stories bc i only ever really started grinding tft in set 10 so these historical videos are so fun to watch for me uwu meow sending lvoe
I appreciate your feedback but there's a reason I do it, I do it because people click off as soon as they start sniffing out the ending, and ending on "it's for you to decide" is a point that will hopefully stick with people and make them thinkg, and when I was editing I actually had a whole segment more but I was like "Nah this... this is a good end, I like this."
Expect set 10 to be a fucking B A N G E R btw. I love that set, I wanna do it RIGHT
@@Nomsynho ohhhh interesting approach! In that case go off :D excited for the set 10 video, i miss that set
There is a 4* Veigar in set 12 though. With the moonlight charm you can star up a unit of a specific cost and if you only have 3* units on board it will star up to a 4*
Only for 1 or 2 costs, Veigar is 3
This was the first set I really dug my teeth into. For it's ups and downs it was a lot of fun. I really loved the first half of the set. It still stands to be the only set I got a 3* 5-cost in. Since I'm still playing into set 12, I'd say it was a success. Also, I was one of those few Caitlyn Legends players.
in set 9 the strongest reroll comp is aways muiltcaster the moment you hit at lest 3 3star muiltcaster with a 3 star tank you can fight level 9 board at level 6 or 7
Pretty sure that was set 9.5, there was a multicasters comp in 9 but it was Twisted fate(the champion) that made it insane
@NomsyTFT na set point 5 is the set of rfc where if your champ can use double rfc you are amazing
Like tf is strong In set 9.5 but for me it's no way close to or cancer as 9.5 realse Bilgewater
I just played hyper roll the entire set. Best decision of my life, never used legends, and the set was genuine gold.
seeing that garen with zeke revived horrible memories put a trigger warning please 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
god i miss double trouble taliyah, feels like no units nowadays have unique interactions with things like knockups anymore
but i mean even without third party apps we would have known the strong legends. thanks for the content! rly like it, hope you grow fruther!
Yeah you're probably right, whoopsees
13:29 you basically win the game for free *gets eliminated*
Finally someone is paying attention, I love putting things like that just to see if people notice
i remember getting so tired i just picked the poro just to feel something
Set 9 is one of my favorite sets ever it was so fun, and if everything is broken nothing is realy broken.
Great vid and great set hope to see set 8 soon❤
Maybe when they do the set9 revival it'll be without legends ;)
Ah I remember when 1 cost rerolling was the shit. Maokai/Viego duo, Kayle/Poppy and etc. That shit was so fun
inkshadow, was a shadow of what i loved about zaun, MISS IT
Set 5.5 was my first I remember first starting being interested but lost at the same time
Sorcs were great this set, watching people explode was so fun I’m surprised you didn’t talk about that
Love your channel.
I like the whole set explained because I just enjoyed forcing yordles and freljord the whole set.
L M A O. So you have chosen violence
I actually climbed from master 100 to gm 400 lp on draven patch while playing only ezreal.
Multicaster was so constested but everhone still went for it 🤣🤣 always went well
I miss zeri and sejuani carry the true damage with sej passive was insane and no one expected it 🔥
this is my favorite set especially the yordle comp
I still think Piltover was in the lower half of loss streak traits, perhaps the worst designed. Lose streak trait that gives you a unit that's straight up better than the potential cash out requiring no actual thought process of how to recover from the loss streak given the reward you got. Yeah you still had to win the one time, but that's a lot less of a hurdle than say being given 100 gold from underground and now you have to roll down and actually hit something etc. Also just much more stable unit synergy relative to others.
Set 9 was my favorite. It will always be the goat of having fun in tft, as it gave so many ridiculous moments
Then it get down to the ground that if you not get Baron you not gonna get into the top 4.
fidget spinner garen is my favourite comp of all tft
next to it atom bomb teemo
both were so fun to play
i miss how you could play a board full of 5 costs and solo almost any board lol
Great video but you forgot, the boss
Draven was the most fun and most degenerate TFT I have ever played. Iconic moment in time that simply can't be recreated.
It would have absolutely caused everyone to quit if it lasted longer than the couple days it slipped through.
The only thing i hate this set is not hitting 6 piltover
Bro like me neither wtf
Set 9 was goat style and unit balance was perfect.
The only it needed was legend adjustments.
Delete TF
Delete Veigar or Vlad
Delete Draven.
Nerf Urf.
So... just delete the legend system and just keep the legend style augments like we do today? ;)
We want these types of videos to be 30 min long.
@@Nomsynho Summoning salt style docs,
I loved this set wish I played it more
set 9 was the greatest thing that ever happend to this game since 6 and 3.5
that last comment about metas and third party apps was such a good analysis.
I will never forgive riot for prenerfing hedge fund
I would farm on Asol and Tahm kench to rush Heimer with triple rageblade and as many Zeke’s as possible and buy triple gold turret. It was so much easier to do that and get three star five costs than any other set since
This is the way
Set 9 was so so good but also so so bad. There were some of the most fun comps ever, but at the same time it was so frustrating not getting a single 5 cost because everyone was rushing lvl 10 to fill their boards and get a 3 star
Set 9 is my first and favorit set, when u didnt know how broken things where and only plqyed against nobs it was truly a fun set
i loved the chaotic sets like set 6 7 and 9 game feels kinda too balanced now
4 Targon, 6 Invoker, 1* Taric with 3 Hullbreaker tank 90k damage
Set 9 my fav in all of tft history thx for this reminder
Set 8 next?? lets gooo my favorite one
suprised u didnt mention the twisted fate locket spam 6bastion aphelios/kayle comps or vladimir being a really good legend to force aphelios aswelll
I loved this set. I used to get prismatic comps almost every game.
In this set I didn't get one prismatic comp yet. Emblems and spatulas are so scarce
When i feel like a set isnt balanced well or i think it is too random/to easy to force broken stuff i usually dont try to rank up high and play fun combs in gold.
Set 9 was my first set and my fave set
Riot Kent's Masterpiece.
the malzahar incident
I think you forgot the Invoker trait - still a good video!
Pretty sure it's in there or I cut it because I had 3 Ahri segments LOL. Should be around the Taric segment
Set 9 was peak I used to run teemo carry and go 8th 6 out of 10 games and it was great
I played poro all the way through the set (with the occasional Ornn) and I loved the set. I genuinely think set 9 had the second most impact on tft after set 6 of course. I do think legends *could* exist, just not competitively.
