I watched a guy give his 2 week notice, and the foreman told him not to come back tomorrow. That was very eye opening. So when I quit, my foreman told us on a Thursday that we were going to be working on Saturday. I told him I wouldn't be there, I was heading to Oklahoma for a new job that day

Loyalty is a two way street. A lot of companies forget that. Why were people more loyal 50 years ago? Because they could support a family, buy or build a house, and still have savings left over on a single income. How many of us would dream of that? It would be hard to give a job like that up. But that's not the reality, and hasn't been for decades. So it is what it is.
No more pensions, most benefits are questionable at best especially if you have a large family. No raises, but they will hire a new person at a higher pay rate… f that job
And you had a chance of moving up. Now you get that promotion carrot hung in front of you only to discover that you’d make less on salary, or they go with an outside hire.
That's what I tell apprentices, not Journeyman. Our "means" shrink everyday with stagnant wages and higher cost. I'm on the road to make 6 figures and I'll be with my Union every step of the way to increase our wages. Keeping up with Inflation isn't a raise.@@CatWith-AHat

I see too many people clock in who look like they are 40 years older than they are, divorce proceedings or always saying how they regret not being there for their kids who are growing up without them basically. Not saying just not work, but that work-life balance is super important not just for your own sanity but for your family and friendships too.

This is a good one because even a lot of kids can relate. When you leave school for work, be it highschool or college, you lose a good chunk to all of those connections. You'll get messages to give references or see if someone knows of any job openings but you won't see most of those people again. I'm far from retirement but seeing all the retirees at the senior center and walking around the path at the local pond talking and being friendly brings me a little peace of mind
I value my job and and prioritize it just as much as the company does... at $x/hr. That's how much they value my time and that's how much value I give them.

Don't get me wrong, outside of time for family, I'll do whatever I can for my job, BUT I remember having been the only kid at sports games without my parents there to watch idk how many times since my mom would regularly work 7-7 and my dad spent weeks or even a month sleeping at the office. Don't want to do that to my kids (when I have em) or make anyone who reports to me do the same. Boss's job to adequately staff, and if they can't, raise pay (and billing rate) until they can balance it and let their workers have that proper balance. (And I am working my way into leadership roles).
A few things I'd like to comment on (I absolutely love these skits, my parents owned a kitchen and bathroom remodeling for almost 30 years before moving on to other jobs. They very much relate to the workplace skits because they faced some of that workplace stuff at some point). 1. Calling something a brotherhood is the same as calling it a family. We're not blood. I come to work because of pay and the benefits. I come in, do my job, go home, and repeat. If I'm being undervalued, I'll go somewhere that pays what I'm worth. 2. Your friends and family will remember you when you're gone, but not your job. Your job will not remember/care about the long hours you put in, the holidays you worked, or how many family events you missed because of work. If you died on the job today, they'll have your job offer out the next day and your replacement within the next few days.
As someone who worked trades on road for 20 years, i enjoyed the different places i went, ive been to 42 states, made good money and had great insurance, great guys that worked with, had all meals paid for even few after work beverages, always stayed in nice hotels, met many good people, and few other positives. Now lets look at mainly the biggest negative, was i missed so much of my kids life, they had everything they needed in life and they cant say that it wasnt comfortable in aspect of material possessions, but so much time that could spent with them, is prceless. I now spend every moment i can with them and help them as much as i can, but they are all grown and on their own now. Wish i would worked job that kept me at home now.

i used to work with a guy who got a military retirement check, a disability check (from military), 20 year retirement from federal job check, and social security check, and he worked the job to get away from his wife and stole all the overtime he could get. He showed up early to work every single day, and left late everyday. He was so so annoying.
I stood beside a couple of people who passed that worked with me even carrying their coffins but absolutely refused to put dirt on them because we laid pipe together and we always watched each other’s backs in the ditches!!!!
I spent a big part of my life working 6-7 days a week as a welder in the navy shipyards here on the west coast. I can say the money I made did not in any way make up for my marriage ending after 20 years because I was never around. The money did not make up for the damage to my body that left me almost disabled now, not able to work a job on my feet anymore. I LOVED welding... slapping my hood down and laying a good bead was like meditation to me... but I loved my wife and kids more, I just didnt realize it. Listen to this kid, he has a really good head on his shoulders! Work and money will always be there, but your Health and loved ones will not.
