  • I'm beginning the work of transforming two succulent plants into future bonsai by repotting them from nursery soil into bonsai soil. The soil and pots should give these plants a good strong growing season when the warm weather arrives!
My first succulent is Euphorbia wakefieldii, also affectionately known to Belgian staff as ‘Killer’
The second plant is a Kalanchoe orgyalis, aka "copper spoons"

Anyone who might suggest you are”lazy” doesn’t know you! Nothing could be further from the truth. There are those who enjoy the rituals and formalities of bonsai perhaps as much or more than the magic of creating miniature landscapes. So nice to have many approaches to the art and skill and practice of bonsai. Thank you for yours. What a wonderful world.

23:46 Nigel, I love that you do not bend your trees in unnatural shapes and you don t wire your trees on to the pot. Let them talk as much as they want. The dogs bark, the caravan moves on, it s an old saying. Love your channel, love the natural shape and practices you present to us.

Be yourself and do it your way, Nigel! I rarely wire my trees in the pot myself, I apply some rocks to the soil surface (learned this from my favourite youtube channel, The Bonsai Zone…) and that works just fine.
Differences in opinion can be worth discussing, but gatekeepers are just wasting everyone’s time.

I get so many negative comments about not wiring both my trees and my trees in the pots. People can't seem to accept using a different approach and technical style to growing trees.

I also almost never wire my trees into the pots. Using stones to hold them in place works just fine for me and saves time as well. Who’s to say what is right and what not … the results - your results - speak for themselves, don‘t they ? So many of us enjoy what you are doing and it‘s a pleasure seeing your trees develop just fine. Wire or not! 🪴💚🪴💚🪴

I hardly ever do wiring myself too. Isn't the not wiring trees the original way of doing bonsai? so why not keep to the original way..
But people tend to complain about anything and everything these days.
Nigel; Your style and your love for the trees is what makes me watch these videos 💚💚💚

The succulent with brownish leaves is called Copper Spoon. It has a sister also which has a similar shape but different color. That is called Silver Spoon that has silverish leaves. Both these siblings are very easy to propagate.

And it is a kind of Kalanchoe: Kalanchoe orgyalis
Kalanchoe are a really cool group of plants - they vary so much in leaf size, shape, color, by species.

I have, or had a pair, that I pruned last autumn. They root from cuttings nicely, but branch out really slowly. Mine are under grow lights and they barely have first new pair of leaves. The stem also doesn’t wooden, it’s just harder. I have them now for 6-7 years.

Hey Nigel, I just wanted to say thanks for the timing of this video. I have been adding to my Bonsai collection, buying nursery plants online and repotting all winter with my wife who watches your show with me from time to time. Yesterday was the first time she got to experience thoroughly watering our plants with our HAWS watering can and Bonsai Supply substrate. I think everything you spoke to in this episode was extremely informative and emphasized many of the points I attempted to express last night.
I recently purchased a Pomegranate and Chinese Elm for her and a Trident Maple and Ficus Green Island Microcarpa for myself. We have been tending to a Ficus Benjamina and a few different Schefflera Arboricola since September of last year. We have both been very inspired by your work and appreciate your daily uploads that keep us locked in.
    Best wishes.

Coming in late; and having read 110 comments, none of the critics have been back to defend their sentiments! I find that people who are critical when your choices are different to their own are often insecure in themselves and looking for validation. When you do things differently, they feel challenged and don't like it.
Possibly another reason for not using wire could be the environmental impacts of it. The ore has to be mined, refined, processed and transported, then after use, it is thrown away . . . creating yet another environmental impact.

I admire you for not wiring your plants. I wouldn't watch if you did.

for the tying of the roots i do like you when roots are not really developed but if i have a few big roots that i can tie without the cables being seen i try to do it, looks like the tree is setting itself quicker in the pot. i had some trees that had a bad start because of not tying them. i'm pretty new into bonsaï (only 3 years) but if i understood well for trees that stay a long time in the pot they end up cutting the cables when the tree has set. @yamasibonkiwa has another technique, he ties his trees with strings so you can remove them easily when the tree is set in the pot.

Good work, Nigel. I believe that if the tree does not need wiring then don't. I like the way you use stones/rocks to stabilise the plant until it gets settled. Keep up the good videos and let the 'critics' get a life ....
