    I live in Alaska and throughout the summer and autumn go on many hike in, boat in and fly in fishing adventures, fly fishing for salmon, steelhead, trout, dolly varden and grayling. Countless times I have come upon bears including grizzlies with cubs. All are potehtially deadly and unpredictable 100% of the time. Sure, yes, it's true that bears are not always aggressive nor defensive. But nonetheless, I am always armed with both a 12 gauge brush gun (loaded with rifled slugs and shot) and a .44 magnum handgun strapped to my chest. I also carry bear spray. Although it's true that holding bear behavior awareness is more important than any firearm, four times I have done everything right and nothing stupid yet was charged, and those weapons saved my life. It's foolish to enter bear habitat without a firearm.

    • @Lure-Benson
      @Lure-Benson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can tell you never had to fire that deer & home intruder defense handgun 44 at a bear because you are still alive and I high think you are another TH-cam comments liar because Alaskans like me who guided 26 years for these bears never ever use such a wimpy handgun for Alaskan bears and never did any guide I knew ever used wimpy handguns for bears.
      The common bear gun in Alaska starts at 338 win mag with the most common are the 375 H&H mag and the 416 magnums not a wimpy handgun of any size !.
      This BS that handguns are bear cannons is PUNK ASS BS by big city slicker green horns who never in there life ever been to Alaska.
      It really gets stupid with morons like you thinking large Alaska bears can be knocked off with a single pistol bullet that has less energy than a 30-30 win and the pistol bullet only carry's it's energy for a short range .
      The next PUNK ASS stupidity is bears start charging at long range so you have time to fire all 15 round from a large auto pistol .

      @Error-pj7ko 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WTF Kyle From what I have researched, a 10mm is a very capable (and recommended) bear defense "handgun' (knowing that handguns are not the ideal firearm like a rifle or shotgun, but they can be practical depending on the situation), but the other important aspect is the ammo. It is recommended to use hard cast ammo as opposed to FMJ.

      There are lots of guns here in canada. You are allowed to bring guns with you into the woods/wilderness. I'm Canadian. U can google it np
      Edit: he is right. No handguns
      "In general, the only firearms allowed for wilderness protection are non-restricted rifles and shotguns. The following individuals, provided they are Canadian residents and have a licence that allows them to possess restricted firearms, may be authorized to carry a handgun or restricted long gun for wilderness protection:"

  • @craigmurley5115
    @craigmurley5115 7 ปีที่แล้ว +82

    You went in there unarmed???!!! That's just crazy and just plain Stupid! I only live in Massachusetts, but I fish in some remote heavily wooded areas that have a pretty heavy concentration of black bears, and I recently had a very close encounter with one! Thank God I had my .45-auto on me, I had just enough time to draw and fire a round over his head and luckily it scared the shit out of him and he ran off! After I calmed down I got the hell out of there! I didn't want to hurt him if I didn't have to, fortunately the day had a happy ending both for myself and the bear!

    • @joshuarempel6497
      @joshuarempel6497 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Craig Murley one issue we face in Canada however (where this is filmed) is legally we are not allowed to carry a restricted firearm in the woods , (restricted being any handgun or rifle the government looks "scary")... so when it comes to fishing here in Canada where this is filmed really we don't have much of an option as far as a firearm goes! I suppose if you had your "pal" and were willing to cary a rifle or shotgun over your shoulder that would work, but when wading upstreams that's pretty difficult to do... soooo bear mace and bangers it issss for us!

    • @eslgurucalif
      @eslgurucalif 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Craig Murley I bet that's not the only kind of happy ending you needed that day. The bear probably needed one, too, from an Asian black bear, no doubt.

    • @jserra17
      @jserra17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A .45 is NOT a bear defense weapon! I have one and like it, but it was designed for hydra-shock to knock down a human and is not capable of knocking down even a black bear, let alone a grizzly. With bears, particularly Grizzlies, you need penetration. I fish in the area where this was filmed and carry a 12 gauge loaded with 3” magnum, Sabot slugs. I have never had to fire it - back away, you are the intruder! P.s. bear bangers are not helpful with Grizzlies.

    • @lovely3097
      @lovely3097 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s their house, don’t go back and you don’t have to hurt the bear 🐻

    • @jserra17
      @jserra17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I suppose it depends on your definition of "their house". It doesn't take a lot of extrapolation to include the entire province of British Columbia, with the exception of Vancouver and a few other small cities. The province is enormous and sparsely populated. For a sense of the scale of the province, you should note that it is larger than California, Oregon and Washington (state) combined. There is lots of room for the bears and for people that are seeking recreation, its just that you don't know when you will encounter a bear. I have never shot at a bear and have every intention to keep it that way - I am not a hunter and I even release all the fish that I catch.
      By spending my vacation $$$ in British Columbia I am supporting low-impact tourism and thereby the local economy. If you spend any time up there, you quickly realize that the economies of the smaller cities and towns in BC are primarily supported by resource extraction - principally timber and mining. Unlike those industries, fly-fishing tourism leaves intact the habitat on which the bears depend. The fees I pay for fishing licenses and daily permits (over $300 Canadian, this year) help to fund broader conservation efforts and also help to pay the salaries of fish and game enforcement officers who are the first line of defense for wildlife. On the whole, I have no difficulty justifying my role in the eco-system and my relationship with the bears, of whom I remain in awe. @@lovely3097

    Bears are great at looking like they are ignoring while they take a read. They will often dig to put their watchers at ease. I"ve seen that on youtube videos. Particularly when they stalk baby buffalo whose parents are in a group being protected. The bear will go after the babies and find one that can't keep up. The bear presses the border of the herd to get them running.

    Don't be fools with your life. I'm in bear country, my .44 magnum is with me. Loaded with 6 hot, hardened lead 320gr. bear stoppers. Even the muzzle blast from the .44 mag will usually turn them. I'm not a gambler because the odds are always against gamblers.

    • @paulhomsy2751

      Charles Joseph , the laws in Canada don't allow you to own handguns. This is more like it. If the laws in Canada did allow you to own them, you'd have them. Please don't play tough guy without giving a complete picture of why you don't bring a handgun with you or need one... It's simple, you can't by law. A rifle or a shotgun would be too cumbersome in this type of cover but still useful if only to turn a bear away. You probably have never seen how quickly things can turn really ugly with a bear, particularly a grizzly. Aside from your post, gorgeous video of B.C. Spectacular province.

      Steffano Ducati not everyone going fishing brings guns. In fact, I live in Canada and it’s illegal carrying a gun, that’s not in a case, or hunting season. I hike, in the wilderness all the time. Without a gun; only mace. Ive never felt a gun is necessary. Mind you, we don’t have grizzlies. I’ve came close to many black bears and never felt i was in danger.
