I think Burton has the best batmobile easily and the best vision of Gotham but writing wise Burtons films are more based around fun. The 2 Burton flicks are more based around the villians then Batman himself Burton chose to treat Batman as a gothic reclusive figure and lean the plot to the villians. For the time I think it works but watching them now you can feel how Batman doesn't totally get enough to do plot wise. With that said Keaton is great the visuals are good to great and the acting is good to great the Burton flicks are obviously products of there time but that adds to the charm for me.

It was absolutely crazy. I worked in a store back then and the amount of merch we had was INSANE. Warner Brothers couldn't keep up with the demand. There is an interesting mini documentary about a small company called Toy Biz that made the original 89 action figures instead of Kenner. They couldn't handle the demand; they couldn't get Michael Keaton's face right on the figure; and were just overwhelmed leading to the retail shortage. They went out of business and Kenner came crawling back and they did the much better figures starting in 1990, I believe.

To quote Jack Nicholson. "You need the dark comedy, Some of him needs to be outrageous or preposterous because if that isn't there and you try to humanize a character like that, it'll fuck you up mentally. It was probably my worst audition as I'm not acting for some of it I'm just having a good time because I love the character so much. My goal was to freak people out. Also I liked how you included actual footage of people not liking Keaton being picked as Batman. I always heard about it but I was too young at the time to even know the initial backlash with Keaton's selection was negative. It just goes to show that WB knows what the hell they're doing when casting Batman in these movies, excluding George Clooney.

I used to watch Batman 89 all the time when I was a kid, and a few weeks ago I rewatched it for the first time in years. And I loved it. Especially Nicholson. I think Heath Ledger is definitely the best, but Jack Nicholson has become very underrated in recent years. He was absolutely phenomenal as the Joker. He is also by FAR the most accurate portrayal of the character ever put to film. He had so many iconic lines and he was genuinely funny and terrifying at the same time. Phenomenal performance

Personally, not every movie or show needs a character arc. This movie was more so introducing the first true adaption of the Dark Knight. The character alone was fascinating by itself and it was mainly exploring why Batman does the things he do in the movie. He doesn't need to change, besides its the characters around him that change over the course of the film. There are different types of character arc structures in stories. In Batman 1989, Bruce/Batman is a character who doesn't go through growth but rather the character that revolve around him grow or change because of him.
Overall though Batman 1989 puts Bruce's character arc in the past rather than the present. As I said before as well, for the time this was the first true dark telling of Batman. It really didn't need a hero's journey for it to entertain audiences since it was all new and fresh. Over the years the newer Batman films add more realism and more complex stories to entertain us since with Batman a lot has already been done with the character.
It goes without saying without this first simple but dark movie we would never of had more mature super hero films.

Maybe the resolution is all a part of his growing character.
This is probably him still trying to understand who he is and what is actually right or wrong. He still doesn't understand the problems with being Batman such as how his actions may have consequences (including killing the Joker).
He still didn't learn in Batman Returns, but he might after witnessing both the Penguin's sad(ish) death along with never seeing Selina Kyle again (until they meet up in the '89 comic). After this, he probably is trying to learn more about his consequences and tries to mend his wrong doings.

Awesome job! That was a very on point breakdown of the things which make this film groundbreaking, yet flawed in some very important areas. The whole critique of the lack of a character arc for Bruce/Batman was totally accurate IMO, & you managed to highlight exactly why so many hardcore Batman fans had serious issues w/certain aspects of this story. Many fans came out of this film feeling cheated in a way, because making Joker the killer of Bruce's parents came off as sort of lazy writing to an extent. It provides an avenue for a rather simplistic revenge story to play out, all the while casually defying many of the rules previously established for the character over many decades of mythology.

You know the one real thing that gets me about this movie…How in the hell does Knox not know who Bruce Wayne is?! I mean, I can understand Vicki not knowing because she’s new in town but Alex is a friggin reporter in Gotham! Sure Vicki runs into him during the party and actually asks him “do you know which one of these guys is Bruce Wayne?” and Bruce shoots her a no idea. Heck, I would too if some random hot woman would be asking for me too! Lol. But again, Alex saying “who are you?” when they run into him while looking for Commissioner Gordon is kinda odd for me. Sure he may be a bit of a recluse int the first two movies but c’mon everyone in Gotham has seen at least a picture if the man once. Again, Alex works for the newspaper! How do they not have at least one image of him from some kind if something somewhere?! Best way to put it…Batman! Batman! Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in where a man dressed up as a BAT, gets more press than Gotham’s golden boy?! Lol. Looking forward to next Friday thats for sure! And I cant wait for the “Returns” upload as well.

Sean Young had the role but during rehearsals in England she broke her arm horseback riding in preparation for a scene. Kim Basinger was cast literally two days before filming began. She deserves credit for stepping in flawlessly.. Was her role the greatest? No, but she was savvy enough to know this would be a game changer in her career.

Hands down the best live action Batman movie ever made. Michael Keaton is only topped by Kevin Conroy, Jack Nicholson is only topped by Mark Hamill, and the best Gotham City ever made. It's very interesting that Bruce Wayne isn't that well known by the public, instead being a recluse. I'm also genuinely shocked that Bob, Eckhardt, and especially Alexander Knox (who is the best character in the movie) haven't been brought back in the comics or cartoons...

12:21 Actually during production, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton had to read not only Dark Knight and Killing Joke while the other had to read the Silver Age comic, but the two also had to read the original early 30s comics when he (at the time) killed his criminals, and Bob Kane suggested Burton to make Batman kill a few of his criminals in order to reflect that vintage version he and (mostly) Bill Finger originally intended the character and stray FAR as they could to Adam West's version.
Also, it was Michael Keaton's idea to hang upside down. Not Burton. So, you would die if you do that Mr. Keaton. 🤣

    • @kazinadbiralamadit6905
      @kazinadbiralamadit6905 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually Bill Finger hated the idea of Bruce/Batman killing, when DC editorial suggested Batman stop killing criminals he jumped on the idea & encouraged it. Also he really loved the Adam west show, mostly because of the fact it was the first time he was publicly credited with a Batman property. Also had it not been for the series Bill would have lost the official writing Job he had for Batman comics at the time. Bob kane used all of his powers & connections to stop Finger to be credited. Finger didn't want royalties or any compensation for Batman he just wanted to be credited.

I find Burtons Batman 1989 to be most influenced by the early 1939-1940 era of Batman, where Batman very much used lethality in dispatching his adversaries.
The film is essentially reflective of the Finger/Kane/Robinson days, with a some Sprang influence (especially with the Joker having a permanent smile) all rolled into one cinematic experience.

Now I’m so happy they didn’t kill him because that would’ve contradicted the whole point of the movie

In case for those interested on who’s my first Batman, it’s the animated series version. I watched the show on Fox Kids and I watched the badass Mask of the Phantasm on video and I watched it every single damn time, so who was my first live action Batman? Val Kilmer’s take on the Caped Crusader in Batman Forever, I still love the film years later and I love that it kept some of the dark tones from the previous entries while at the same time being goofy and campy like the Silver Age Batman with hints of the 1966 Batman series.
