    • @Yikes702
      @Yikes702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It was absolutely crazy. I worked in a store back then and the amount of merch we had was INSANE. Warner Brothers couldn't keep up with the demand. There is an interesting mini documentary about a small company called Toy Biz that made the original 89 action figures instead of Kenner. They couldn't handle the demand; they couldn't get Michael Keaton's face right on the figure; and were just overwhelmed leading to the retail shortage. They went out of business and Kenner came crawling back and they did the much better figures starting in 1990, I believe.

    To quote Jack Nicholson. "You need the dark comedy, Some of him needs to be outrageous or preposterous because if that isn't there and you try to humanize a character like that, it'll fuck you up mentally. It was probably my worst audition as I'm not acting for some of it I'm just having a good time because I love the character so much. My goal was to freak people out. I think they liked it, I'm still making money off it!"

    You know the one real thing that gets me about this movie…How in the hell does Knox not know who Bruce Wayne is?! I mean, I can understand Vicki not knowing because she’s new in town but Alex is a friggin reporter in Gotham! Sure Vicki runs into him during the party and actually asks him “do you know which one of these guys is Bruce Wayne?” and Bruce shoots her a no idea. Heck, I would too if some random hot woman would be asking for me too! Lol. But again, Alex saying “who are you?” when they run into him while looking for Commissioner Gordon is kinda odd for me. Sure he may be a bit of a recluse int the first two movies but c’mon everyone in Gotham has seen at least a picture if the man once. Again, Alex works for the newspaper! How do they not have at least one image of him from some kind if something somewhere?! Best way to put it…Batman! Batman! Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in where a man dressed up as a BAT, gets more press than Gotham’s golden boy?! Lol. Looking forward to next Friday thats for sure! And I cant wait for the “Returns” upload as well.

    Maybe the resolution is all a part of his growing character.
    This is probably him still trying to understand who he is and what is actually right or wrong. He still doesn't understand the problems with being Batman such as how his actions may have consequences (including killing the Joker).
    He still didn't learn in Batman Returns, but he might after witnessing both the Penguin's sad(ish) death along with never seeing Selina Kyle again (until they meet up in the '89 comic). After this, he probably is trying to learn more about his consequences and tries to mend his wrong doings.

    Hands down the best live action Batman movie ever made. Michael Keaton is only topped by Kevin Conroy, Jack Nicholson is only topped by Mark Hamill, and the best Gotham City ever made. It's very interesting that Bruce Wayne isn't that well known by the public, instead being a recluse. I'm also genuinely shocked that Bob, Eckhardt, and especially Alexander Knox (who is the best character in the movie) haven't been brought back in the comics or cartoons...

    When it comes to Batman killing in the Burton films, from what I understand the reason is because Batman killed in the golden age comics, which is what Burton was basing his Batman on when he made these movies. It's also the reason why the movies have a oldschool setting.

      Well in The golden age wonder woman's main weakness was being tied up by a man superman couldnt fly until the flesisher cartoons and lex luthor was a generic mad scientist and most stuff in it was retconned by The crisis on infinite earths so using it as an argument or excuse for batman to kill is stupid

    If it wasn't for this movie we would never have greatest DC show of all time Batman the Animated series and this movie is reason why Batman was taken seriously instead of being a joke before this movie came out casual audiences were use to Adam West campy Batman. This was DC first movie that set the tone that superhero movies can be taken seriously (no disrespect to Christopher Reeve Superman) and audiences are interested in seeing dark tone superhero movie pretty much this like how Blade paved the way for modern day superhero movies.
    I still wish we could have seen Keaton Batman vs. Christopher Reeve Superman World's Finest we almost got it twice technically Batman & Robin confirmed they both exist in same universe (until this was retconed Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are not canon to Batman 89 and Returns) and the second time CW Crisis On Infinite Earths could have had Routh Kingdom Superman (his version is same one as Reeve) confirm Keaton Batman same universe as his but Joker is alive in his universe even other variant Keaton Batman Earth 89 joker still alive.

    Yeah this was my first introduction into Batman as well. Superfriends had been off the air for years, there was no Batman Animated Series, etc. Although my favorite Batman on film is Bale, Keaton's Batman will always hold a special place in my heart.
    Also I liked how you included actual footage of people not liking Keaton being picked as Batman. I always heard about it but I was too young at the time to even know the initial backlash with Keaton's selection was negative. It just goes to show that WB knows what the hell they're doing when casting Batman in these movies, excluding George Clooney.

    Watching Batman ‘89 and Returns throughout the years of my life, I’ve come to the realization that it works….Tim Burton’s Batman is heroic, yes, but he is a heroic villain. Where Deadpool, Red Hood, and Wolverine are seen as ANTI-Heroes; Burton’s Batman can be perceived as an ANTI-villain….he’s hypocritical, paranoid, angry, vengeful, and kills without remorse. But, for some reason it works for me…Did anyone notice how Batman DOES NOT kill until his embedded memories visit him in a brooding session and he realizes Joker killed his parents? It seems like a lazy idea to have that plot point, but now it seems genius. To have that personal connection makes you understand why Batman is so crazy. Why he kills. He is a Batman defined by revenge, and it blinds him. This causes him to kill every Joker goon and drive him up the tower to kill the man who brought him endless pain. To kill the man who killed his parents. And what makes this work is the subtlety, the realism. He can’t stop. He crossed that path that Bruce told Jason of at the end of Under The Red Hood. He lost himself. So he keeps killing people in Returns, this time without any feeling. They are obstacles in his way to killing another freak who is defined by that parental pain and isolation, Oswald Cobblepot. The Triangle Circus Gang could almost be his Alfred, his family. And this makes Batman a hypocrite, he loves that Gordon doesn’t only not care about his murders, but endorses them. Batman is a villain. Batman is defined by revenge.

    • @JoshuaRLaBelle
      @JoshuaRLaBelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also feel that the Tim Burtons movies are very focused not on Batman himself, but on the effect he has on the people in his world. If you focus, Batman and Batman Returns have a subtle three person POV throughout the three acts. First Act is from the point of view of Joker and Penguin, then Second act is Vale and Selina, and then the third act is both Keaton. I feel that Returns is great because the ending redeems his first film. Where he was trying to kill the Joker, he now tries to save Selina. Why? Because she is becoming that Anti-Hero defined by revenge.

    I was born in 83. As kids, when we talked about our favorite super-heros, it was Batman with Keaton or Superman with Reeves.
    Imagine a world where the multi-verse included a white haired, white suited, Reeves. Keaton and Reeves on the screen together either then or now would have been epic.
    RIP Reeves, still the best, and Superman is better.

    Awesome job! That was a very on point breakdown of the things which make this film groundbreaking, yet flawed in some very important areas. The whole critique of the lack of a character arc for Bruce/Batman was totally accurate IMO, & you managed to highlight exactly why so many hardcore Batman fans had serious issues w/certain aspects of this story. Many fans came out of this film feeling cheated in a way, because making Joker the killer of Bruce's parents came off as sort of lazy writing to an extent. It provides an avenue for a rather simplistic revenge story to play out, all the while casually defying many of the rules previously established for the character over many decades of mythology.

I think Heath Ledger is definitely the best, but Jack Nicholson has become very underrated in recent years. He was absolutely phenomenal as the Joker.
