I see they paved the top part of the climb. When I was there 3 years ago it was basically gravel, the pavement was that broken up. My all time favorite climb. Stoked to see this footage of it. Thanks!

I was so nervous before the descent, and then it turned out to be one of the best feelings in the world (which makes me regular of this channel). I was crying tears of joy (sounds cheesy but it's a fact) when we rolled into the warm valley air. We spend the entire rest of the day in the spa of our mostly empty ski resort and feasting on local specialities. Bliss.

After talking about Mortirolo - Gavia for years, but always beeing scared - this year I finaly did it. Went much better than I thougt. A liiiitle underwhelmed at Mortirolo but Gavia was su much better and nicer than I ever could imagine. Super area.

Descending through this pitch black tunnel (no installed lights at all) was one of the scariest things I've done on a bike. I was following my friend who is smaller and lighter than me (and slower on descends), and I just kept thinking: "whatever you do up front, don't hit the brakes."
I've climbed the Stelvio by this way in june with a full bikepacking equipment (9kg bike + 13kg tent, sleeping bag,...) It was reaaaaally hard, probably the hardest climb I've ever done in bikepacking (harder than Mont Ventoux because of the altitude) So, well done guys ! :)
Phenomenal video! You might want to consider adding a HR and wattage display for the climbs… I’m sure lots of folks would be interested in that data. Cheers!

I don't do reviews but I think you can tell how well the gear works considering the range of temperatures we're riding through. Best piece of clothing for this trip is the EQUIPE RS Spring Fall Jacket TARGA. Amazing temperature regulation.
Alex for your legs recovery, you need to stretch when you muscles are cold (morning/before bed), 1 minute or so per muscle and stop before it hurts. Cold shower helps me a lot to, you can shower only the legs for 1 minute, then hot shower.
Gavia has little car/motorbikes traffic compared to Stelvio, and it's not unsual to pedal in the utter silence, it's really something. Also the nature is very different compared to Stelvio, with more trees and green pastures. Stelvio unfortunately is often plagued by motorbikes racing their way to the top. Unless you hit it on special days with little traffic, the noise of motors and the dangerous driving, somewhat ruins the experience. On a sunny day the scenery you get on Gavia is just majestic..
If you want to have a chill time up Stelvio, you gotta get up right at dawn. We even asked the hostel to serve us breakfast before their usual hours. That early, not many motorbikers are around.
Eat and drink as much as you can before you enter Swiss Franc country: things get expensive there. And may the weather get better. Incidentally, if you are in France in bad weather and don't feel like riding-those little PMU betting shops/cafes are happy for you to sit in there all day only drinking coffee sporadically. It is better than staying in a tent all day. No idea about Italian equivalents - and I have no memory of Swiss ones despite having lived there for a summer.
I think the weather is getting worse the closer we get to Zurich 😅. So far we've been really lucky so can't complain. The PMU shops are good to know about!

Pedaling the bike is our everyday life. We eat whatever is available, mainly pasta, pizza, pastry. Used the drink mix for riding because it's easier to get carbs that way than trying to eat and we like to keep moving fast.

Dead legs after after a heavy day the day before? If you can, get those legs into some really cold water on the ride, dip in a mountain stream or lake for 10 - 20 minutes. Ideally move the legs in the water, walk or waggle them. Back on the bike and the dead feeling is gone.

Luckily the Gavia is right next door. The Umbrail is really quiet too. Lots of options!
