Her '80s hits are definitely softer than her earlier songs, but they're all great songs. Negative emotions are not automatically more artistic than positive emotions. It's fine that she wasn't 100% a fan of those songs. Music is a collaborative artform and no band is going to have every one of their songs loved by all members. There were certainly Beatles songs by McCartney that Lennon disliked and vice versa.
I never associated "Jefferson Starship" with "Jefferson Airplane" and fell off my chair when I read there were common band members. Lots of hippies sold out. Their ideas weren't good enough to fundamentally change the world. Taking drugs certainly won't. (Drug taking and artistic creativity are old bed fellows anyway). They did create some extraordinary music. The world is a better place for much of that.
Guess it's a stark example of moving from soft drugs like pot and psychedelics to cocaine and the like? It certainly seemed to happen to a lot of bands, and part of the reason why music of the 1980s was so far removed from the sounds of the 70s, more than any shift between decades I've ever seen.
I don't know if you're still there... Hope you do... I wonder what would you say about her solo music. Dreams album. Music is just music after all. Any music can be real, sincere, and genuine, no matter what internal vocabulary it uses: that of "Rock", "Pop" or any other. One day a musician finds those vocabularies limiting
Grace, should you ever see these comments,,,,,you are incredibly talented, & I’d like to know how I could possibly acquire one of your fabulous works of art!
The song wasn't called "Nothing's Gonna Build This City", it was called "We Built - Stop Us Now." :-) Spotify has a pretty good explanation of how the trajectory you mention happened. Never really thought about Slick much but that Spotify bio made me want to look into her and I'm really glad I did. She seems so ALIVE; someone I'd really want to spend a day with!
Once the Jefferson prefix was lost, the band (what was left of it) was largely reliant on material from outside writers. There were a couple of good hits but I'm not surprised she reformed Jefferson Airplane not long after.
Surprised to see someone like Grace saying something this stupid. We all know that we're not superhuman & can be stopped by a truck. It's obviously referring to accomplishing goals - she certainly must admit that she didn't allow anything to stop her artistic success. Just say the song was corny & leave it at that.
@darkwolfdv again in her own words, on several interviews, I'm not commenting on Slick's right to be a singer, before you start on that, I think she was a great singer, and also Joplin, just different kinds.
Even if yer right: Here I am still listening to stuff like Baxters, and surrealistic pillow 40 years later!! Lemme tell ya, those other "60's star" would have been kicked back today, had they lived!! Even Iggy pop
@xway, I don't think most people put too much rigid requirement on their standard of "artistry" these days. Some people just like a visual representation of a song, or just a cute damned sketch of an animal. Big deal--let 'em have it. If others want to go cut their ears off and live angstily in a drafty studio, they are welcome to do so.
I saw her live a couple times. The band wasnt as tight as on the albums but pretty good show. Grace definitely is as described an American icon, her and the Jefferson Airplanes music lives on as it is very good, particularly Surrealistic Pillow. People are real negative now, like they are caught in an ugly time warp of bile just coming up from the stunted lives society offers them and they couldnt be in the Jefferson Airplane cause no talent and not good looking.
@cdchurcher Wow, I think that is one of the most racist things I've ever read. To say that someone can't sing as well as someone else because they happen to be white and middle class is not just ridiculous, it's abhorrent. That's like saying that you can't expect someone to be an engineer or an astronaut because they're black.
Starship is the best. Great sound, great energy, great albums.
She is a stunning painter and illustrator. I had no idea...
Love her
Very multi talented woman. She's really a living legend

Wow, Grace Slick is multidimensional. So deep!
Just before she said "How many artists have you seen painting a picture that's already in the frame?" I was thinking the exact same thing!
My mind is incapable of planning the trajectory from White Rabbit to Nothing's Gonna Build This City.
Applemask Easy. Drugs.

Candy Bergen and Grace Slick both lived in the Haight at the same time.

She basically hates the starship period
It's disappointing (for those of us who liked it) that so many people, including the lead singer, hate Starship.

Was so disappointed to hear Grace trash "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" 😔 Great song!
And she may be a good actress, because in the videoclip of the song she is seen having the time of her life singing it.

Pretentious woman.
