    I started bee keeping a year ago in UK and friend reccommended I get one of these hives. I did so and ended up with a great yield.
    I made a stand and roof area for it and painted it to weatherproof it. Bees are happy in these hives and there is considerably less disturbance than traditional hives.
    The problem is the wood they're made from is pine, so prone to swelling so everything jams in winter.
    Also when fiting the backs on the metal aligning lugs are a complete pain toalign because some of the frames are prone to warping.
    The solution is to slide frames in so they align at front of hive and remove ones at rear.
    These hives really need to be enclosed in a barn to stop them deteriorating.
    Frames are not compatible so best to buy Langstroth ones and adapt if you are at an apiary with others
    They are a cool hive and have been about since shortly after the first beehive was invented. They need tweaking to make them more user friendly. Taking the trouble to do this saves hours of frustration jiggling frames...

      I have to say the Europeans developed some fantastic hives over time. Here in the states we basically use the Langstroth which is good for here.
      I've also seen Polish beehives and never saw them again. A friend who was a college professor had one.
      But, yours is so nice in the way a person could be inside out of the weather and still check the hives or extract. I also like the hive body as it doesn't seem to cause issues getting the frames out for inspection or extraction. I know some Americans are making changes so that Langstroth frames fit. I've heard they are an issue getting stuck with propolis and comb.
      I may buy one of the slovenian hives and try it. It looks like fun

    These hives are great. You could build them right into a building and really have a controlled environment as far as temperature and humidity at least. You could literally be rearing brood all winter you might have to feed more but you could come out of winter really strong

      The Europeans have developed excellent hives. My cousin is in Germany and he too keeps bees. I helped a professor with a beekeeping class years ago and he had a Polish hive.
      If I ever had the opportunity to visit Europe (cousins) these would be top on the list to see.

    I was thinking about a Slovenian style migratory shed with solar powered dehumidifier. The brood boxes would ventilate to the outside maintaining humidity. the honey super space would be designed to evaporate the nectar quickly. Perhaps it could be built as a series of sheds the could load on a semi. You might get a pretty good load of colonies if you had a popup shed to arrangement

    • @beebob1279
      @beebob1279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would just let the bees do their thing to evaporate the honey. If you have green honey in the frames leave it for the bees to finish or put the frames in a room with a dehumidifier

    • @jebise1126
      @jebise1126 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Richard, I have a question, I got a Nuc in April, by the end of May they were thriving, then got infested with varroa mites and the colony really drop in numbers, in August I did the three-week treatment with Oxalic acid, cleaned the mites but the colony doesn't seem to recup in numbers, two deeps are full of honey and pollen and and just a few frames for brood, but the outside of the hive is not by far what it was in April and May. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @beebob1279
      @beebob1279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a year later but I'll give it a try. You likely let the mites get ahead of you. You need to monitor those things at least once a month. Their numbers will sneak up on you and then you're going to have real issues.
      Oxalic Acid works best on the hives when they no longer have closed brood. You can try Formic Acid which is supposed to kill mites inside the capped cells. Or other treatments.
      But to keep the hive from crashing you need to keep the mite numbers under control. In samples (watch a youtube video by professional beekeepers and not backyard beekeepers) you shouldn't allow the mites to exceed 2 per 100 bees. Or two percent.
      You may have to treat a few times with different methods to get the mites down. I had that problem two years ago. No matter what I did the numbers went up. I found out that a beekeeper in the area didn't take care of his mite loads, lost his colonies and my bees robbed him out and the mites kept hitch hiking a ride back to my colonies.
      Be diligent and don't give up. It's a great hobby

    • @thebeesqueen2831
      @thebeesqueen2831 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aloha, Patrick! I use both plastic and wax foundation in my hives. If you use wax foundation, inside of the cell you can see a Y or an upside-down Y. When the bees draw out natural comb, the upside-down Y is positioned towards the center of the brood nest. Marking the frames allows me to return extracted frames into the colony in the position the bees prefer without having to eye it first. Plastic foundation is the same on both sides which may be one reason bees are slower to build comb on plastic frames.

    Reducing the natural tendacy for bees to swarm is not good, do you treat for varroa? Another not good thing to do to bees, contrary to commercial beekeepers using chemicals this affect brood and infects honey, limiting the brood to 1 brood area does mot allow for a natural progression of bees to expand as in nature, what works in Slovenia does not always work in other climates because bees are acclimated to lat and long. Hives close together increase the chance of drifting of disease ( bees in the wild do not live that close together).
