    What he’s teaching is an advanced technique that assumes you know rhythm, some theory, and can perform scales, chords, extensions, and inversions in both hands in your sleep. No way you get all that in this clip. So it’ll be somewhat frustrating for a beginner.

      KENNETH STRIJDHAFTIG I have played piano My whole life. And I don't think the other technique or method is wrong, but it's good to know all methods and pick the one you think sounds the best for whatever you are playing.

    • @exoressdelivers70
      @exoressdelivers70 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      KENNETH STRIJDHAFTIG +i think to say the other method of using chords in the left and a single note melody line in the right is "incorrect" is brazen to say the least. I have heard some of the most beautiful renditions of classic songs played the"incorrect" way. Especially when the pianist 'waves' the melody line by using stretch hands to play two identical melody notes an octave apart one slightly behind the other. Both ways are correct.

    • @tracyparnellmusic
      @tracyparnellmusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you think back to the old tune "Almost Like a Song" by Ronnie Milsap, I believe that was played with simple block triads in the left hand and melody above at least for the intro. So, that technique is not "incorrect" per se. However, the instructor here is correct that the open voicings sound better generally speaking.

    here's a few ideas for how to learn piano
    Try practicing about an hour a day, or half an hour if you are very busy.
    Do more practice whenever you can. For example, on weekends you could do more than 1 hour, perhaps two or three, or even more. This is useful because it pulls you out of the routine of piano playing, and lets you practice more and perfects the pieces you play.
    (I discovered about these and more from Denelle Piano Lesson site )

    As a fan of your other videos, and as a fellow teacher, this video is not your strongest. Your explanations of the techniques use knowledge that the player would already know, given the subject you're trying to teach. In other words, any student trying to learn this subject, would not know the vocabulary building-blocks you use to explain it.

    • @MattMurphyMusicTeacher
      @MattMurphyMusicTeacher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But don't misread me, you have several videos I think are very clear and a wonderful resource, thank you! This one, in my opinion, is a misstep because the way you explain the subject uses more advanced techniques/vocabulary/theory than the subject itself, if that makes sense.

    • @thepianoplayer416

      The problem is that he doesn't explain how he derive the different chords to go with the melody. He simply tells you to use a C chord here, E minor there... let's put in a 7th chord there. The chords he used seemed to work and people who already have enough knowledge or chord progression will get something out of the video. For people who are new to chord progression like the rest of us, we need a much clearer explanation why a C chord would work in a specific spot and not another chord.

    • @brianmi40
      @brianmi40 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      The song doesn't matter to the concept though. Do you at least get that Melody (highest note played with Right Hand), Bass (lowest note played with Left Hand), and filling in the chord tones with certain patterns with the left hand (1-5-1, or 1-5-3 for example), and finally a chord tone or two available with the right hand is ALL that's going on here??? If not, watch it again, and focus on not what he exactly plays during the demo songs, but the part of his playing that is the left hand (1-5-1, or 1-5-3 for example), and the melody in the highest note of the Right Hand.
      Don't overcomplicate the concept. Yes, like anything it will take practice to KNOW YOUR CHORDS and CHORD TONES, but if you think about it SO MANY songs are written with 6 chords or less, AND, if you were to play them in the SAME KEY (like C Major, or for minor keys, C Minor), you would pretty quickly get familiar with these chord tones??? In other words, if you play in the key of C, you will end up playing a C chord so many times in short order, that you can hit the 1-5-1, or 1-5-3 with the left hand with your eyes closed, and from behind your back if you know what I mean.
      That's it in a nutshell, it breaks down to a pretty logical and sensible approach all based on those basic elements of
      FIRST, identify the Melody NOTES, and BASS NOTE, which will determine the chord (since the chords will generally come from the Key that the song is in, if one doesn't, you'll have to figure it out, or save that song for later, or look it up on line to see what the chord is)
      Then LEARN YOUR CHORD VOICINGS and fill in the notes in between.
      I would suggest starting by figuring out the chords for a song you like (or search for the chords for any song on the Internet, since THAT isn't copyrighted, and they're available for just about every song ever written that was popular in any way), and just start by playing the 1-5-1, or 1-5-3 (or the others he mentioned...) form of those chords with the Left Hand, while playing the melody with the right hand. Essentially, you'd be playing it sort of like the crappy way he mentioned gets taught, BUT, you'd be doing it with the proper LEFT HAND CHORD FORMS that will SET YOU UP TO LATER MOVE ON TO FILLING IN THE CHORD NOTES IN BETWEEN TO GET THE FULL EFFECT OF HIS TECHNIQUE...
      Play that ONE SONG OVER AND OVER that way until you can do it with YOUR EYES CLOSED ALMOST because you know the LEFT HAND CHORDS SO WELL.
      Now, just starting looking for a chord tone or two to add in between them to fill out the sound. Playing it slowly, you should readily be able to make a choice of which chord tone(s) added in, make each part sound better. yes, there's some deep science to picking them, but your ear should do just fine, and again, it makes the music YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE SONG, which is a CRITICAL SKILL TO DEVELOP IN MUSIC. If everyone were going to play a song the same way (i.e. note), then you should just learn to read sheet music because that's what that does... Keep in mind, you don't have to have 7 notes always playing in the piano at the same time, that is, sometimes it makes sense to just play a note or two of the melody by itself, and then the next chord. If you understand Passing Tones, that will make sense to you.
      Get it?

    • @brianmi40
      @brianmi40 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh, and forget the whole ending with Chord Extensions being used, that's way advanced for way down the road in your playing (or players read to tackle that concept, because they have MASTERED the earlier material in the video, and can pretty much play ANY SONG with the techniques covered BEFORE going over the advanced part of Chord Extensions.
      Just take from that part of the video, that if you go "down this path", that's where it CAN lead if you stick with it long enough, you can master the basic chords of a song SO WELL, that you start envisioning CHORD EXTENSIONS and CHORD SUBSTITUTIONS that make the song richer, or take it in a different direction, such as a jazz voicing...

      thepianoplayer416 I don't get why he mentions 1-5-3 and 1-5-b3. Aside from the fact that my left hand will never stretch far enough to play it properly, I don't see him using it. Unless he means playing 1-5 with the left hand and then 3 or b3 with the right hand.

I don't know that I'd call the 2 part system "wrong" (I've been plunking along with it for years) but I must say your 3 part system sounds a lot better and will add some challenge to my old habits. Hey man thanks for your videos, they are incredibly helpful! I am wondering about the bit you played at 2:40... it seems to be the same chord voicing and i see 2 possible anlalyses.
    1. Minor chord voicing (13, 9, b3, 5) - move the root from G to Bb to F to Ab.
    2. Dominant chord voicing (3, 13, b7, 9) - move the root from C to Eb to Bb to Db
    I figure it's more likely the dominant chords because of the suspenseful feeling. It sounds super cool. I'm wondering what kind of context in which this could be used? Does it have a roman numeral analysis? Is it contained (or nearly so) in a mode or key?

    I like how he bluntly says this is NOT the right way to play at the beginning. It goes against the sentiment that "there is no wrong way to play" which I also like, but I've noticed that people are taking that sentiment to new levels, promoting mediocrity and being paranoid of challenge and criticism. Thank you for not being afraid to tell people they're wrong in a world where people increasingly feel the need to be told they're right no matter what.

      "The piano is representation of the orchestra" Sounding good is not just playing the right chords with the right melody. You also have to distribute the voices correctly to make is sound balanced. This is why voicing is important. So when he says chord + melody is incorrect, he is right. You have to play bass + chord + melody. There is many advantages playing this way, especially if you plan modifying your left hand accompagnement (changing the rythme pattern of the LH).

    I'm confused. I can't figure out how to manage to play notes that are out of the scale (G Major. The whole white keys right ?) naturally... Could someone give a hand with some key word to Google or something ? 'd be glad :)

    Sir, I am a regular viewer of your piano classes. Please clarify-while playing modern left hand pattern 1-5-8, how I will follow the rules of parallel fifth and parallel octave in similar/contrary motion as well as unison to octave and octave to unison for consecutive chords which are forbidden in Western classical music.

    Question 1- I thought chord notes needed to be played at the same time for it to be a chord ... isn't the point of harmony notes that sound good when played 'together' ?
    Question 2- Are arpeggios that play the chord notes considered to be melody or harmony ? ... how about arpeggios that play other notes of the scale and also the chord notes too ?
