A 170 YR OLD NAAN BREAD SHOP STARTED BY THE NIZAM’S CLERK | KHADEEM MUNSHI NAAN | HYDERABAD OLD CITY
Right behind Salarjung Museum, Old City, Hyderabad, is a lane called Purani Haveli. And at the central crossroads of that lane is an epic naan bread shop that’s almost two centuries old now. Wow, right? Almost two centuries old. Now, this just can’t be determination alone; of course, this is quality too. In 1851, the Late Mohammed Hussain Saheb, a clerk in the office of the 4th Nizam of Hyderabad, set up the Khadeem Munshi (old clerk) Naan Bread Shop to make some side income for the family.
Little did he know that his simple kitchen and tandoor set-up by the road will travel so far in time and generation after generation will look after it like it’s their own child. Blessed are the souls who get to see this. It’s a very small canvas, but every bread baked in that tandoor is a symbol of legacy. Golden brown and crusty on the outside and extremely soft on the inside.
The workers there, like a bunch of musicians in a symphony orchestra, well-coordinated and totally in sync with each other, make 2000 naan breads every day for loyal customers who start lining up outside the shop at 7:30 am. The difference between this bread and any other bread baked in the vicinity is this precious ingredient called ‘khameer’ which makes the bread tender, tasty and lasts very long.
We spoke to a couple of their customers and they said that their family can totally make out the difference between Khadeem Munshi Naan Bread and any other bread and that no matter how long it takes them in the queue for this piece of history, they ensure this is what they carry back home. To make something, continuously with the same quality, for 170 years, and for it to touch people’s lives so deeply is truly what every businessman dreams of. And a businessman who is also a magician at the craft is who really achieves it.
After the shoot, we took away some of those amazing naan breads and enjoyed them without any gravy or chai, and they were delicious as hell, just on their own, going down the system like a soothing ancient story that’s smooth yet exciting. So next time you are in the old city area, and you feel like having a snack, walk over to the khadeem Munshi Naan Shop, pick some of that good stuff, dip it in some hot chai and savor the heavenly taste.
    Thank you for watching
